What I'm Diggin'

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt33188730/

Terrifying Baking Skills

Since It’s the Halloween season and I love all things related to baking, I really enjoyed the 2024 TV Miniseries Killer Cakes. You can stream it on Prime Video. The host Matthew Lillard is perfectly placed for me since he was one of the main stars of Scream and 13 Ghosts, two of my favorite Halloween classics. Danielle Harris and Nikk Alcaraz are the judges and bring their ghastly expertise to the stage. Most cooking programs spotlight mouthwatering meals. Killer Cakes spotlights the mouthwatering macabre. Produced by heavyweight horror studios Blumhouse and High Noon, it tasks cake artists with molding gory visions in frosting and fondant. Each round presents a new nightmare theme challenging bakers’ special effects skills. From serial killers to demonic entities, their edible creations morph into monsters before the judges’ eyes. Throughout the show, SFX pros lend their touch, assisting cakes to emerge oozing or spinning without crumbling. This show is super fun and entertaining because it intertwines competition, baking, special effects, and best of all- HALLOWEEN!

Weekly Song Recommendations…

with Amelia

Hello, this is Amelia Schmutz! I am a junior at GWCS, and I write a section of the WYNK on song recommendations. I hope you enjoy. Feel free to talk to me at school or email me your top recommendations and favorite songs for a future WYNK.

Email: amelias@gwcommunityschool.com

MY
RECOMMENDATION

“Guess I’m Doing Fine” – Beck

Beck is a chameleon of music. He has done everything from orchestral pieces, to a Prince-like album, to Rap, to funk, to electro-pop. I could go on and on. Beck’s album “Sea Change” is alternative-country and is easily one of my favorite albums of all time. The album was born after Beck broke up with his then fiancée, Leigh Limon, after discovering that she was having an affair with a member of the band Whiskey Biscuit. “Guess I’m Doing Fine” captures the immense pain and sadness Beck felt while writing “Sea Change.” “It's only lies that I'm living. /It's only tears that I'm crying. /It's only you that I'm losing. /Guess I'm doing fine.” “This resulted in some pretty solid reviews.” To quote The Delete Bin. The guitar slowly strums creating a feeling like you are floating slowly through the clouds in quiet, desperate cry.

GWCS RECOMMENDATION

“One of a Kind” – The Heavy Heavy

Recommended by Mr. Parisi

GWCS’s very own Mr. Parisi recently got to see The Heavy Heavy in concert at the Howard Theater. The Heavy Heavy produces psychedelic rock in their own style. The song “One of a Kind” delivers a gritty rock and roll groove “that you can sing along to, even if you don’t know the words,” Mr. Parisi said, and he is right. The bass goes off while the guitar delivers one of the best guitar solos I’ve heard in a long time. The Heavy Heavy is definitely worth checking out!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhEyeOtF2j8

NEW RECOMMENDATION

“Nothing Would Change” – The Linda Lindas

The Linda Lindas are an indie rock band that has recently been on tour with Green Day on their Saviors Tour. They recently released a new album “No Obligation” on October 11, 2024. “Nothing Would Change” is an upbeat rock song that will make you want to shout every lyric even if you don’t know them. “Running was a game. /Now we're both running away. /Remember in those days. /We thought nothing would change.” The song is about yearning to stay young and avoid changing too much.

What I'm Diggin' - Sports Edition…

Major league baseball PLAYOFFS

That was a great regular season, but like all pro sports, the playoffs will be a different animal!  Rivalries galore!  Dodgers-Padres, Tigers-Guardians, Phillies-Mets!  It would be hard to ask for more.  Ohtani nearly gave us a 60-60 season, no teams broke the hundred win barrier, and rookies emerged as stars all over the place.  This weekend is the beginning of the final four: Dodgers-Mets, and Yankees-Guardians; winners of each series to meet in the World Series, where you can expect to see more All Stars playing than in any other game, other than the All Star Game!  You can watch the strategies unfold on every pitch.  There is a reason that Major League Baseball is known as ‘The beautiful game!’  Diggin’ it!

What I'm Diggin' - Space Edition…

Click image to view history being made and feel the excitement!

SpaceX Catches Giant Starship Booster with Mechanical Arms

I grew up in the 60's and as many kids was fascinated by the US Space Program.  I built the plastic model Saturn V giant rocket that took Apollo astronauts to the Moon. I've visited Cape Canaveral and bent my head way back looking up from the base of the Saturn V on display trying to see the tiny Apollo capsule on top.  I now help kids build cool robots.  But I could never have even imagined a huge tower taller than the Statue of Liberty (and its pedestal!) using robot arms to catch a booster rocket larger than Saturn V as it maneuvered into position using its own rocket engines!  Way cool!

Our Amazing Parents!

At GWCS, we always say that community is so important that we made it our middle name—and several Coyote parents are proving that in spades! So, here’s a heartfelt shout-out to those helping make GWCS the best school on the planet!

Ashley Alford, laudable librarian, showed us the magic of modern libraries, reminding everyone that they go far beyond books! From Libby and Transparent to power tools—your FCPL card unlocks it all.  We were all gob smacked to find out how much the library has to offer!

Craig Morse & Marissa Farina-Morse – Thank you so much for our sleek new school sign! It looks incredible and makes things feel more official than ever!

Katie Zeytoonian – Pesto-Palooza was a smash! Students harvested basil from the garden with Katie and whipped up the most delicious dip and sauce. Keep your eyes peeled (BOLO) for more Coyote Cuisine events with Katie!

Tamara Pincus, LCSW– Huge thanks for volunteering to run an AMA-style Sex-Ed class during Amazing Days on December 6th. Students, don’t miss the separate blurb with info on how to submit anonymous questions. (info)

Jocelyn Adamoli, Katie Zeytoonian, and Tamara Pincus have courageously volunteered to help research and stir up interest for a 2025 GWCS Spring Break Travel Trip for our Coyote Community! (info)

Weekly Song Recommendations…

with Amelia

Hello, this is Amelia Schmutz! I am a junior at GWCS, and I write a section of the WYNK on song recommendations. There are three sections:

  1. My Recommendation (any time period)

  2. GWCS’s Recommendation (what’s your jam?)

  3. New Recommendation (something new and different)

I hope you enjoy. Feel free to talk to me at school or email me your top recommendations and favorite songs.

Email: amelias@gwcommunityschool.com

My Recommendation:

“You Know I’m No Good” – Amy Winehouse

“You Know I’m No Good” appears on Amy Winehouse’s critically acclaimed album “Back to Black.” “Back to Black” is an album I believe has no skips. “You Know I’m No Good” sticks out to me because of Amy’s brutal honesty about self- awareness and complexity of relationships. "I cheated myself. /Like I knew I would. /I told ya I was trouble. /You know that I'm no good." It resonates with so many people, including me. Amy Winehouse paints a picture that brings you right into her point of view. The punchy upbeat of the song sticks will you for hours.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-I2s5zRbHg

GWCS’s Recommendation:

“Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” – Paula Cole

Recommended by Ms. Kohler

Finding the right person can be so hard and “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” is a perfect example of that. In a Songfacts interview with Paula Cole, she said the song is "…so many things woven together: wit, irony, humor, melancholy, and gender role examination. It's all these things put together musically in this plaintive, Americana pop way." The song follows a woman who falls in love with a cowboy in a '56 Chevy. She realizes that the cowboy is a complete bum then wonders to herself where all the good ones have gone or “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” Many have misinterpreted this song to be that she is happy to do the housework while her “cowboy” pays the bills. This isn’t the case at all. The lyrics, “Where is my John Wayne? /Where is my prairie song? /Where is my happy ending? /Where have all the cowboys gone?” shows that she is unhappy with her relationship and its gender roles. Combine this with a calm pop rhythm and it ties the whole song together it a nice bow. Or should I say lasso.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUmKUWzbDxg

New Recommendation:

“Selfish” – Solya

“Selfish” was released Solya’s Jewel Box” EP which debuted on October 11, 2024. The song is ethereal like a Lana Del Ray song mixed with a Mazzy Star song. The song is about a girl wanting more from a boy so much, so it becomes “Selfish.” “Nobody knows I’m Selfish. /Sing for me.” the chorus goes. Solya’s music is definitely worth checking out.

Walk through the glass doors at 2:20, and you’re in for a surprise! What will you find? Will it be a pop-up nail salon? Maybe students picking fresh basil from the SLAY garden for pesto-making? A heated chess tournament, a serious dance party, or a jewelry-making workshop? Perhaps even a cipher code creation for the yearbook or a round-robin ping-pong showdown? Yes, yes, yes, and more! Weekly Song Recommendations…

with Amelia

Hello, this is Amelia Schmutz! I am a junior at GWCS, and I write a section of the WYNK on song recommendations. There are three sections:

  1. My Recommendation (any time period)

  2. GWCS’s Recommendation (what’s your jam?)

  3. New Recommendation (something new and different)

I hope you enjoy. Feel free to talk to me at school or email me your top recommendations and favorite songs.

Email: amelias@gwcommunityschool.com

My Recommendation:

“Time” – Pink Floyd

“Time” shows off how Pink Floyd is able to relay a theme in both the lyrics and the music. Starting with a soft ticking of a clock, you feel the need to turn up the volume only to be startled by alarm clocks going off. As the alarms settle down, a heartbeat-like beat starts. My uncle Pete called this part the “stereo test” because the beat goes from ear to ear. Pink Floyd’s bassist, Roger Waters, once told Rolling Stone magazine, “The reason it’s a good song is because it describes the predicament of anybody who, growing up — if we’re grown up at all — suddenly realizes that time is going really, really fast.” After the lyrics, “No one told you when to run. /You missed the starting gun,” the song transitions into one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. The quality is so good, it is impossible to think that this song came out in 1973.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr0-7Ds79zo

GWCS’s Recommendation:

“Float On” – Pickin’ On Series, Iron Horse

Recommended by Ms. Warden

The song “Float On” is originally a Modest Mouse song. Pickin’ On Series and Iron Horse decided to do a bluegrass interpretation of the song. The song is about how bad things always get better; it just takes time. The bluegrass creates a completely different vibe from the original. Though it is different, it adds a massive amount of positive energy. After the song is over, you won’t take things so seriously. It will make you think about nicer, simpler times.

Original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTAud5O7Qqk

Pickin’ On Series, Iron Horse version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMhP7QJoQNk

New Recommendation:

“Bodies Laughing” – The Smile

“Bodies Laughing” is the closing track on The Smile’s third studio album “Cutouts” which debuted on October 4, 2024. “Bodies Laughing” came out two days before on October 2, 2024. Not many have heard of The Smile but they’re more familiar than you realize. The members are Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, from Radiohead, and Tom Skinner, from Suns Of Kemet. The song is a mix of irony and sincerity. It’s about people laughing at you when you are down. “You're falling on your ass. /Falling through the glass. /And everybody's laughing. /Bodies Laughing.” Jonny Greenwood’s guitar plays elements of upbeat surf-pop and dark, gritty post-punk. During the refrain of the song the beat kicks up followed by lyrics “Cause’ we can’t control it.” The song ends with low pitched voices humming while Thom Yorke sings in a higher pitch. The song is so good it will have you joyfully melting to the floor in Mr. Mallonee’s office on a lovely Wednesday afternoon, like I did.

What I'm Diggin' this Week…

FLAGS!

Flags.  Me?  I never knew more than a handful of flags.  Then Dokota came along and changed everything!  He was my first vexillologist.  He left flag drawings and notes lying around for others to find.  Then I bought a full set of world flags (Miniature; we are not recreating the Hall of Nations, KC) and Nathaniel and Aung helped me hang them all the way around the new-new wing.  Then I found out that Peter can identify all of the world flags (states and territories) as quickly as most people can identify their own phone numbers.  That resulted in me buying the full deck (260 members) of world flag flashcards so we could all play with them and get to know them a little better, with an outside chance that this will further a course of understanding for the rest of the world and its people.  Just a head’s-up, if you’re about to delve into vexillology, Chad and Romania are going to be tricky!

Camping.  Camping, camping, camping…

Why is camping so much fun?

We left school early.  That’s always nice.

The trip to Burke Lake Park is quite short.  That’s nice.

Lot’s of GWCS families loaned us tents and chairs and lanterns and tiny, pitchforks for roasting marshmallows and every necessity that camping requires.  That was nice.

We worked together to set the camp.  Tents over here, tents over there.  Choosing the right firepit, building the canopies to fend-off the rain, and stowing our gear safely and snuggly to free us up for other endeavors.  That was also nice.

We played in the field near the camp.  Frisbee and football and wiffleball for all.  The hurricane rains backed-off in the afternoon and all was clear.  That was so nice.

We ate dinner around the campfire.  We broke out the camp-chairs.  We talked and talked for several hours.  Our conversations ranged from ghost stories to travel tales to terrible puns.  We laughed and ate snacks and stoked the fire.  That was really nice.

At midnight we went on the traditional midnight hike;  Which has never taken place at midnight before this year.  We walked across the park in the cloudy darkness all the way to the edge of Burke Lake.  We stood in silence and listened to the lake and the leaves and the sound of a distant owl and took a moment to connect with nature.  So perfectly nice.

Being together in a setting unlike any other that being enrolled in school could possibly provide, we relaxed and lived completely at peace, even if only for a little while.  That was especially nice.

Smores.

Weekly Song Recommendations…

with Amelia

Hello, this is Amelia Schmutz! I am a junior at GWCS, and I will be writing a section of the WYNK on song recommendations. There will be three sections:

  1. My Recommendation (any time period)

  2. GWCS’s Recommendation (what’s your jam?)

  3. New Recommendation (something new and different)

I hope you enjoy. Feel free to talk to me at school or email me your top recommendations and favorite songs.

Email: amelias@gwcommunityschool.com

My Recommendation:

“Present Tense” – Radiohead

There is something so pure about “Present Tense.” It has a sweet samba beat and soft, gentle guitar which radiates a feeling of love and desperation. Lead singer Thom Yorke sings of being in a relationship and pushing away the present tense as a relationship falls apart and becomes more hostile. The lyrics change from, “Or all this love will be in vain" to "or all this love has been in vain.” Thus, switching from the past tense to the present tense.

I also want to add that my dad plays this song beautifully on the guitar.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPAZV8y4B44

GWCS’s Recommendation:

“Just like Heaven” – The Cure

Recommended by Mr. Goldie

I think everyone can relate or appreciate “Just like Heaven.” To quote frontman Robert Smith, “It's about hyperventilating – kissing, then falling to the floor." The joyful beat and rhythm will make you want to get up out of your seat and dance like no one’s watching. The song captures the fresh and overwhelming feeling of being in love. The chorus being “You/ Soft and only/ You/ Lost and lonely/ You/ Just like heaven.” After listening, you will have a huge smile on your face. All together this makes the perfect love song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xmf5ct3rOSc

New Recommendation:

“Rivers” – Joel Lyssarides and Georgios Prokopiou

Joel Lyssarides is a Swedish jazz pianist. Lyssarides just released a new album “Arc & Rivers” with Georgios Prokopiou on September 27, 2024. “Rivers” is an orchestral piece played on the piano by Joel Lyssarides and on the bouzouki by Georgios Prokopiou. The bouzouki is a Greek musical instrument that belong to the lute family. The piano flows perfectly while the bouzouki is played in a sort of flamenco-like style. Together these two instruments create a serene sound that is phenomenal to listen intently or to just play in the background.

Click the coyote above to go to the GWCS Parents/Guardians FB Group

At Back-to-School Night there was a discussion about the possibility of creating a Facebook Group for current GWCS parents and guardians to share resources about topics that might support all. Shoutout to Rachel Albert for taking the lead and creating a private space for GWCS parents on Facebook. Take a moment right now to join the private Facebook group for GWCS Parents/Guardians This is different from the public 'page' that GWCS currently has on FB. This is an interactive group for parents.

ABOUT: This Facebook Group is a place to talk about all things school and out of school related with other GWCS parents/guardians. For example: Looking for someone who lives in your area to carpool? Looking for a cool summer program? Wondering about Driver’s Ed? Share community service opportunities.

JOIN: Go to Facebook and search for “GWCS Parents/Guardians” then request to ‘follow’ this group. Within a few days you will be accepted and can begin reading and contributing.

What I'm Diggin' this Week…

THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX!

I’m diggin’ the Autumnal Equinox! As we are learning in the History of Science class, last week marked the day when we had 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of nighttime (equinox means “equal nights”).

Autumnal Equinox was Sept. 22, 2024

You might think the next big astronomical event is the shortest day of the year in late December, known as the Winter Solstice. But you’d be wrong! The end of October is a Cross Quarter Day which is the astronomical halfway point between Fall and Winter. Today, we know this cross-quarter day as HALLOWEEN! (The next one is in February. Do you know what we call it?)

Mr. Howarth
Science Teacher

Click Here to FOR A GREAT VIDEO ABOUT THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX

Every week in the WYNK a staff or faculty member will share with us something they are ‘diggin’! It may be a music artist, a museum, a hobby, a book, a tech tool, a current event, a recipe, a game, a fun fact… you name it - we dig it!

ATTENTION GWCS JUNIORS…

NEW DATES!

GETTYSBURG MOVIE & TOUR

“Every fall, the GWCS junior class heads north to Gettysburg. It is not truly analogous to Lee’s march on Gettysburg in 1863, but we mention it. Of course, we ride on highways through rolling hills and arrive in good condition and good spirits in less than three hours, and Lee’s troops arrived after a forty-day March, but still, the similarities are undeniable.”

~ Richard Goldie 2016

FORMS:

MOVIE:

  • Thursday, October 17, 2024

    • 2:30 pm - 7:15 pm

    • Watch the really, really, really, really long Gettysburg movie

    • GWCS Café. Dinner will be provided.

TOUR:

  • Friday, October 18, 2024

    • Gettysburg Tour Day

    • Depart GWCS at 6:00 am sharp!

    • Return to GWCS at 4:00 pm-ish

COST:

  • FREE! Tour, cyclorama, food and transportation all paid for by the GWCS Foundation

  • Feel free to bring some extra $$$ for snacks/souvenirs though!

ATTENTION: GWCS PARENTS & GUARDIANS

Ask and you shall receive!
A NEW FACEBOOK GROUP FOR YOU!

Not only is this the perfect time to sharpen your minds and explore new things, but this class also counts toward your Student Enrichment credit. That’s right, you’re learning and leveling up! By the end of this, you’ll not only be a master of the material, but you’ll also be one step closer to crossing that finish line. So, buckle up, because we’re about to make Wednesdays way more interesting!

And for the final classes we have:

  3. SCIENCE PODCAST PARTY with Mr. Howarth: Since current events in Science & Technology affect our daily lives, it is important to “keep up” with our ever-changing world. Podcasts are the newest avenue for learning in media, so we are going to explore them in our weekly “listening parties."

We will mix up topics so there is something for everyone…and a great way to do that is with the famous NPR Podcast, SCIENCE FRIDAY*.

  4. DANCE with Ms. Graham: Welcome to 7th Period Dance, where we’re bringing the heat with hip hop and a little line dancing on the side! It’s all about rhythm, fun, and expressing yourself while earning your student enrichment credit. So lace up, bring your energy, and let’s dance our way through Wednesdays!

  5. MUSIC with Mr. Mallonee: Welcome to Music with Mr. Mallonee, where we’ll explore the sounds, rhythms, and melodies that make music come alive! Whether you’re a budding musician or just love to jam out, this class is your space to create, listen, and appreciate music in all its forms. From instruments to vocals, theory to practice, you’ll find yourself immersed in the art of sound.

Thanks for a Great Evening of Connecting!

Back-to-School Night Recap

Wednesday night was a blast! Thank you to everyone who showed up, brought delicious food, and made it a fantastic event. For those who couldn’t make it, we missed you, but hope to see you at our next Parent Coffee on Thursday, September 26th at 8:15 a.m. at Peet’s Coffee (right behind the school).

The evening was filled with fun, get-to-know-you games, and an opportunity to hear from each teacher. At GWCS, every teacher works with every student, regardless of whether they have them in a traditional class. This ensures our community-driven approach to education.

Some thought-provoking discussions emerged throughout the night:

  • Could there be an international trip during spring break?

  • Should parents start their own Facebook page to share valuable resources like camps, service opportunities, and driving schools?  [Done!]

  • What would a sex education program look like, if we started one?

We also learned a few fun tidbits:

  • No one reads emails anymore!

  • Ms. Warden’s only social media presence is SignUpGenius.

  • Coyote Web can help you find fellow parents nearby.

  • Parents are always welcome in the building!

Stay tuned for future events, keep using SignUpGenius, and let’s keep that Coyote Pride going strong! And always, ALWAYS, read the WYNK. 😉

The best place to confirm times and dates from week to week is on the GWCS Calendar.  We encourage all students to try at least one (or more).  Electives are classes which means attendance is taken and grades and credit are earned.  Clubs are more casual, and students do not earn grades or credit.

Amazing Days:

Unleash your curiosity and dive into a world of limitless possibilities with our thrilling hour-long Amazing Day classes. These one-of-a-kind sessions are your passport to exploring an array of captivating subjects, all led by expert teachers who are passionate about sharing their knowledge. Each week students will choose from several Amazing Day activities—everything from how to change a tire to how to paint like Basquiat, how to use Excel to how to eat a pomegranate, how to play cribbage to how to play the stock market. Simply put: Amazing.

Amazing Days are also a great opportunity for students to request a teach to supervise an hour-long event like a jam session, a game of Catan, or a trip to the park.

Office Hours:

Office Hours offer a valuable opportunity for students to connect with teachers, peers, and advisors. Whether you need extra help understanding a concept, want to engage in peer tutoring, seek guidance from advisors, or tackle homework in a focused environment, Office Hours have you covered. This dedicated time ensures you receive personalized support, enhancing your learning experience and helping you achieve your academic goals.

In the world of Office Hours, both guidance and autonomy thrive. While teachers and advisors often assign students, the power to initiate rests in your hands too. If you're seeking assistance, don't hesitate to request a meeting with your teachers. To find your designated Office Hours, consult the big board in the LGIR. This efficient system ensures you're always in the loop about where you'll be for the day.

Art Elective…

Wednesdays at 3:15 pm BEGINNING 9/18

Calling all Creative Coyotes! (That’s you, artsy and artistically inclined folks!) We’re going to make some art this year and we’re so excited about it! Focusing on personal expression and community building, we’ll work together on Wednesday afternoons (and maybe some Saturdays during robotics) to design, plan and create an awesome mural in the school. What better way to make GWCS feel like your home-away-from-home than to paint the walls and leave your beautiful mark?!

No art experience necessary!

  • Art Teacher: Rachel Albert (Micha’s mom)

  • Wednesdays: 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm beginning Sept. 18th

  • Please note: We will need a certain level of enrollment for this class to move forward.

  • Watch for a signup next week!

History in Movies Elective…

Sports in history

Thursdays at 3:30 pm BEGINNING 9/12

This year’s theme is “Sports in History.” History in Movies is a class and a project dedicated to stringing thirty [or so] Hollywood movies together in a weekly succession to create, if you will, a visual timeline of some particular part of human history. Due to time constraints and a lack of movie titles covering certain epoch, the sketch will be far from complete, but might still serve as a loose-fitting guild that could be referred to as American Pop Culture’s Guide to Everything you need to know about the History of Sports (all of this as determined by me, of course).

WHAT: History in Movies Elective

  • WHEN: Thursdays from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm-ish (ending time will vary)

  • WHERE: Cafe/LIGR

  • WHY: Earn elective credit, snack and chill with friends, cheer and cringe

  • WHO: All GWCS students welcome

  • QUESTIONS? Contact Mr. Goldie at goldiera@gwcommunityschool.com

Dungeons & Dragons Club…

Fridays at 3:15 pm BEGINNING 9/13

Hello Parents,

I am Hartly, a freshman student at GWCS and the leader of the D&D (dungeons and dragons) club. D&D is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game, which means that players take on the personality of a character and act them out in a tolken’esk setting. When something needs to be determined, we roll dice. I like to describe it as more mature make-believe with rules and math.

D&D is both fun and educational, as it teaches communication, negotiation, and teamwork skills through cooperative play. We hold D&D sessions every Friday from the end of school until 5 PM.

Since I run the sessions and not a teacher, we have a rotating schedule of parents to supervise. This means that if you wish to sign your child up, they have a three-week trial period before deciding whether to commit. If they commit, and if you are able (if not its fine) we would like at least one legal guardian to enter the rotating schedule of parent supervision — bring a book. Watch for a signup next week.

For more information or if you have any questions, feel free to have your child contact me at school or you can email me at hartlyl@gwcommunityschool.com

  • The Add/Drop date for first quarter is Friday, September 13th. Changes can be made to students’ schedules during this time without grade penalty. See Advisor for blue Add/Drop form.

GWCS FORMS

  1. EMERGENCY FORM: Please complete and return the 2024-2025 Emergency Form to the basket on the front desk by Wednesday, August 28th. It is very important that we have this completed form without delay.

  2. HEALTH FORM: All students are required to have on record a Virginia School Entrance Health Form (or similar immunization record). (You can check student’s CoyoteWeb account to see whether or not we have their immunization on file.)

  3. MAT MEDICATION FORM: If it is necessary for a student to take medication prescribed by a physician during school hours or during a school-sponsored trip, please have your physician complete the MAT Physicians Medication Consent form (one for each prescription) and provide GWCS medications in the original prescription container. Medications will be administered during the school day by Mr. Mallonee.

  4. PARENT-STUDENT HANDBOOK: It is important that parents and students take the time to read the entire Parent-Student Handbook, and complete the GWCS Parent Student Handbook Agreement. This needs to be printed, signed and returned to the basket on the front desk by Wednesday, August 28th.

  5. COMMUNITY SERVICE: All GWCS students are expected to complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service each school year. There are many opportunities to earn community service hours through school-sponsored activities. However, students may also complete their hours at any institution, facility, or program that is approved by Ms. Warden.

GWCS RESOURCES & INFORMATION

  1. GWCS PARENT PORTAL: On the GWCS website is a password protected Parent Portal which has a plethora of information and is your go-to-place when looking for school forms or information. Almost everything mentioned here can be found on the GWCS Parent Portal. And the password is... gwcscoyotes

  2. GWCS CALENDAR: GWCS has an online Google calendar linked on the website which is updated daily. Click on an event for more details and easily add events or holidays to your own personal calendar, if you’d like. The School Year Calendar-at-a-Glance includes all of the school holidays and some of the year’s events. We recommend referring to the online Google calendar for the most up-to-date information.

  3. WYNK NEWSLETTER: Most Fridays during the school year, everyone in the current GWCS community receives an email with a link to the WYNK - the GWCS Newsletter. WYNK stands for "What You Need to Know". What you are reading here is the first newsletter of the 2024-2025 school year. Traditionally, the newsletter will provide families with a list of the following week's activities followed by accolades and announcements. The WYNK newsletter is published on the GWCS website (under the Resources tab) and shares the same password as the Parent Portal: gwcscoyotes.

  4. FAMILY ROSTER: The GWCS Family Roster is available on CoyoteWeb. This roster includes all of the students’ and parents’ names as well as addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Although we like having student cell phones on file, we do not publish them in our Family Roster. Please feel free to use this roster to contact other GWCS families and arrange carpools. Inform GWCS of any changes or updates to your family contact information. (How-To: Parent Access to CoyoteWeb & Roster)

  5. GWCS FACULTY: A list of all the GWCS teachers and staff with their contact information is available on the Faculty/Staff section of our website as well. We encourage you to email your child’s Advisor and teachers with any questions, concerns or, the always welcomed words of appreciation!

  6. PE at AUDREY MOORE RECENTER: GWCS staff and students begin their day at Audrey Moore RECenter which is just one mile east of GWCS on Braddock Road. All students participate in hiking, personal fitness or basketball practice Monday – Friday! A FCPA Pass is required for Personal Fitness and Basketball. Hiking Club uses the outdoor trails around the RECenter and a FCPA Pass is not required.

  7. COYOTE HOWL: The Coyote Howl is our version of the school “bell schedule”. Please refer to this when scheduling appointments so that there is the least amount of class disruption as possible. It includes 1st & 8th periods which are currently scheduled to begin on September 9th.

  8. SCHOOL SPIRIT APPAREL by Rokkitwear! Order GWCS gear such as t-shirts, polos, button-downs, sweatshirts, jackets, hats, shorts, pants, warm-ups, backpacks, scarves, blankets... you name it - they've got it in every style and size imaginable. Find the style that suits you and get your coyote on!

  9. SCHOOL SUPPLIES: In addition to this supply list, students will receive a course syllabus from each of their teachers the first week of school. Included in each syllabus will be a list of supplies needed for their class.

    • BINDER: For the first week of school students should have a binder or pocket folder with notebook paper and writing utensils.

    • LAPTOP: Most of students’ classwork and assignments will be delivered and returned electronically through Microsoft Teams. Therefore, the most important school supply to bring to school every day is a laptop (fully charged) and a power cord. It’s important to have a system in place so that the occasional assignments, documents, flyers and permission forms that do get printed don’t end up in a crinkled ball at the bottom of the backpack.

New students will receive their password along with the Microsoft login info from their Advisor on the first day of school. Email Ms. Graham if student cannot remember their CoyoteWeb password. Summer Mentorship Opportunities

Harvard Undergraduate OpenBio Labratory is introducing the first-ever Student Research Institute (SRI). This is an inaugural virtual research program led and advised by Harvard undergraduates and faculty, aimed at increasing access to high-quality research. Students selected for SRI will be paired with top PhD candidates and faculty at Ivy League/high-level institutions across the world to conduct research. Over the summer, selected students will work in a 1-on-1 capacity with their mentor in a field of interest, working alongside them to conduct a research project. Students will have the opportunity to hone their skills in research by writing a full research paper, which SRI will then publish in a research journal! Students will also present their work, with the possibility of winning an all-expense paid trip to Harvard for the top competitors.

For more information on our organization and SRI, please visit their website. Applications are now open for this completely free program!

GWCS Faculty Appreciation Week May 13-17

Next week is the week to celebrate the GWCS Faculty!

Monday  - Continental Breakfast

Tuesday – Surprises!

Wednesday -  Gift baskets Preview for Friday Raffle

Thursday - Each Teacher Gets to Take Home A Dinner – We Need Your Help!

Friday – Lunch from Spartans

Senior parents are taking the lead on volunteering, recognizing that many other parents are volunteering for graduation.   But we still need some help.

  • Biggest need – families to volunteer to make a favorite meal that a teacher can take home for dinner on Thursday night.   We need at least one vegetarian meal and one completely gluten-free meal.   Melissa Koenig is coordinating.   Please contact her by Monday if you can donate a meal so that she can match meals up with teachers by Thursday – mksoph@yahoo.com.

  • Other ways to pitch in:

    •  Donate a gift basket for teacher raffle.   We’ll bring baskets to school on Wednesday and raffle on Friday.   If you would like to donate, please let Sharon (sjchen27@cox.net) or Shannon (shannonrudisill@gmail.com) know.

    • Ask your student to write a note to their teacher or a homemade gift.

Thanks all!

GWCS Faculty Appreciation Week May 13-17

GWCS Faculty and Staff go above and beyond the call of duty from before the first day of school until after graduation to provide the best educational experience for our children.   This is never clearer than the second semester.

In addition to individualized teaching and advising, faculty are organizing senior internships, taking underclassmen on OBX experiences, and organizing multi-day trips for students for academic and social enrichment.   We invite everyone to join us in showing appreciation the week of May 13 – 17.   Parents will soon receive an email with detailed signups for food contributions and volunteering, but we’d love to hear from you NOW so we can identify a core group of volunteers.

If you are able to help out that week, please contact Sharon Lin at sjchen27@cox.net.   She’ll follow up with opportunities.  We have different schedules and time commitments to meet your availability.

Thank you!   Sharon Lin and Shannon Rudisill (shannonrudisill@gmail.com)

OBX Overview

OBX #3 | April 30 | Luray Caverns

8:30 AM - 3:15 PM

NO GYM! - please arrive by 8:30 am for an 8:45 am departure

Destination: luray caverns

ABOUT

Instead of the Metro and darkness, we will enjoy 1 hour 40 min drive through the lovely rolling Virginia countryside.

After arriving we will try our sense of direction in the 1-acre Garden Maze, the biggest hedge maze in the Mid-Atlantic states with over 1500 Evergreen hedges and over 40 junctions.

Then we will strap in and explore the Rope Adventure Course, like a huge, multi-level Jungle Gym of ropes and wood.

After that we will rest with a pizza lunch and a lazy wander through the Car and Carriage Caravan Museum, and maybe the gift shop, before beginning our walk through the cool caverns just when it is getting hot.

Luray Caverns is world famous – considered Geology’s Hall of Fame.  A self-guided tour along well-lighted paved walkways will lead us through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10-stories high to view towering stone formations and natural wonders at every turn.

Then another beautiful and restful ride back to GWCS.

Attire

  • Dress for comfort outdoors and in the cool caverns in clothing that will accommodate being strapped into a climbing harness.

  • Make sure you have shoes that are good for walking on cement, wood and rope.  No flip-flops.

  • Sunscreen may be appropriate for our outdoor activities before lunch.

  • Wear GWCS Spirit gear if you have it.

Lunch:  We will have pizza and drink at a picnic area by the ropes course.  You may bring your own lunch if you prefer.

Parents!  We would love to have you join us!  Please let me know if interested.
