Summer Mentorship Opportunities
Harvard Undergraduate OpenBio Labratory is introducing the first-ever Student Research Institute (SRI). This is an inaugural virtual research program led and advised by Harvard undergraduates and faculty, aimed at increasing access to high-quality research. Students selected for SRI will be paired with top PhD candidates and faculty at Ivy League/high-level institutions across the world to conduct research. Over the summer, selected students will work in a 1-on-1 capacity with their mentor in a field of interest, working alongside them to conduct a research project. Students will have the opportunity to hone their skills in research by writing a full research paper, which SRI will then publish in a research journal! Students will also present their work, with the possibility of winning an all-expense paid trip to Harvard for the top competitors.
For more information on our organization and SRI, please visit their website. Applications are now open for this completely free program!

GWCS Faculty Appreciation Week May 13-17
Next week is the week to celebrate the GWCS Faculty!
Monday - Continental Breakfast
Tuesday – Surprises!
Wednesday - Gift baskets Preview for Friday Raffle
Thursday - Each Teacher Gets to Take Home A Dinner – We Need Your Help!
Friday – Lunch from Spartans
Senior parents are taking the lead on volunteering, recognizing that many other parents are volunteering for graduation. But we still need some help.
Biggest need – families to volunteer to make a favorite meal that a teacher can take home for dinner on Thursday night. We need at least one vegetarian meal and one completely gluten-free meal. Melissa Koenig is coordinating. Please contact her by Monday if you can donate a meal so that she can match meals up with teachers by Thursday – mksoph@yahoo.com.
Other ways to pitch in:
Donate a gift basket for teacher raffle. We’ll bring baskets to school on Wednesday and raffle on Friday. If you would like to donate, please let Sharon (sjchen27@cox.net) or Shannon (shannonrudisill@gmail.com) know.
Ask your student to write a note to their teacher or a homemade gift.
Thanks all!
Here are our graduation volunteer committees so far:

OBX #5 – iFLY
Tuesday, May 14th, 2024
9:00 AM - 3:15 PM
NO GYM!
Destination: iFLY in Loudoun
About: Prepare to defy gravity on our upcoming field trip to iFLY, where you'll experience the excitement of indoor skydiving. Get ready to spread your wings, unleash your inner coyote, and soar to new heights! If students want to partake, they will be offered two flight simulations. Students will learn about wind tunnels, aerodynamics, build their own aircraft, and watch them take flight. Students will also get to see water suspended in the wind tunnel! This will be a fast-flying fantastic OBX!
Meet at GWCS: 9:00 am (Go directly to school - NO GYM)
Pickup at GWCS: 3:15 pm
Wear: athletic pants and a GWCS spirited shirt. Please wear tightly fitted sneakers with laces or Velcro only (no Hey Dudes, Crocs, Sperry's, etc.). If you do the flight simulations, you will wear a flight suit on top of your clothes. Braid and tie long hair back. Since you won't be able to wear jewelry and watches in flight you should leave them at home. Lockers will be provided for no additional charge.
Lunch: Students should bring a bagged lunch and a water bottle. You cannot buy food there.
Transportation: Staff Vehicles
The OBX field trips are mandatory, and all students will receive a quarter credit for attending the OBX activities. If for some reason you cannot make it next Tuesday, please let me know in advance so that we can adjust our ride lists and activities accordingly.
