Next Week at GWCS:
April 25 - 30, 2016

The student of the week is BRIAN CONNER for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE.

"Spring fever has not undermined this Junior's work effort.  Brian continues to be a star in the community.  His demonstration of excellence is evident in all of his efforts.  His class work has been exemplary.  His review of conditions in Medieval European cities written in a made-up, (bizarre) English dialect had his entire class laughing.  On the same day he submitted a review of Bill Bryson's book A Short History of Nearly Everything that was masterfully written.  Brian is also a regular contributor in Music Club, Theatre/Improv, History in Movies, and other endeavors!"  ~Mr. Goldie

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS Values: Learning, Service, Kindness, Excellence, Responsibility, Investment, Team Play, Intellectual Curiosity

Coyote PAC is a GWCS program designed to more formally incorporate the wealth of parental resources and talents that are so obviously abundant in our community.   PAC Paw Prints is a section of the weekly newsletter where you can catch-up on all PAC related news and events.

(APRIL 13 – APRIL 30)

Since our sock drive was so successful, we've decided to hold another drive! This time, we're going to be collecting NEW pajamas and NEW books for children and teens that are part of the Pajama Program. This program supplies pajamas and books for less fortunate children, many of whom are waiting to be adopted. This drive starts right now and ends on April 30th. We are looking for:

  • NEW teen and toddler sized pajamas
  • NEW teen and toddler appropriate books

Be sure to donate! Have your child bring in any donations and donate them in the bin labeled "Pajama Drive" (located in the cafe).  If you would like to learn more about this amazing program, please visit the website:

Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need nationwide, many of whom are waiting to be adopted. These children live in group homes, shelters and temporary housing facilities and are shuffled often from one place to another. Many of them have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Most of these children have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a parent tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story. Some of the children are living with their families below the poverty level, in desperate need of food, clothing and shelter. These two simple gifts of pajamas and books let the children know that someone cares - sometimes these are the only new things they have ever received.

(MAY 2 – MAY 6)

The last teacher/staff appreciation event of the year is actually a series of events during Teacher Appreciation week, May 2- 6.

As in past years, PAC will provide some type of appreciation event each day that week.  Examples of events in past include catered lunch in; teacher raffle of items and gift cards; items from students (ex. signed flower pots); coffee delivery in morning; pre-packaged, take-home dinners for teachers’ families;  brunch/lunch with items prepared by parents; masseuse brought in. We are NOT limited to these events; other ideas are welcome!

I am asking you to consider what you could volunteer to take on one day of that week, plan and implement it.  There are PAC funds for teacher appreciation, so you will not need to spend your own cash!  And if your chosen event involves getting other parents to donate time or dishes, I will create the sign-up for you and I will put ONE announcement in the Next Week at…. with all the events listed, so all parents will be informed and have opportunities to sign up with specific events as appropriate.

Please reply to me (TA chair Kelly Henderson Hagen at by COB, Monday, April  25 and let me know which days of that week you are available to “take a date” and your thoughts/plan for the event (e.g., “I will run a raffle and am available Tues or Wed”; “I will coordinate a catered lunch and am available any day!”).  I personally will take any date that is leftover, and I will send you all a confirmation of the plans for the week by the 27th.

Thanks for your help making our teachers and staff feel extra appreciated!

(MAY 9 @ 6:30 PM)

The Memory Board tradition at GWCS is a wonderful way to highlight the achievements and good times of graduating seniors on their special day. Please start gathering photographs, memorabilia, and items that reflect your personality, interests, accomplishments and anything that you wish to say and share about yourself and your experiences – here at school and beyond. All items need to be glued or taped to a 3-sided poster board, and completed Memory Boards are due to the school on Monday, June 13th.

Click for larger view of sample GWCS Memory Boards from years-gone-by.

To help students get the process started, a Memory Board Party will be held on Monday, May 9th at 6:30 pm. Senior parents and students are encouraged to attend. Please bring your pictures, poster board and supplies if you are ready to get started. If you are stuck and having trouble feeling inspired, I have lots of ideas and some samples of previous Memory Boards to help inspire you.

Often parents create the memory board as a surprise for their graduate.  Whether it's a surprise or completely designed and created by the senior is up to you!

Looking forward to seeing you on May 9th at 6:30 pm!

Apple Donations Needed for the Student Lounge Apple Bowl

Click on apples to sign-up for a week.

Click on apples to sign-up for a week.

Just an observation from the mid-term breakfast - parents donated plenty of apples and as the following week went on, they dwindled day by day. It was good to see Coyotes munching on apples.

So, this is the start of a healthy Coyote tradition.

There is a plastic blue bowl in the Student Lounge area that we have been using to place apples in on a weekly basis. Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Gala, Golden, are conveniently available at the Giant Market next to GWCS. Five pound bags cost from $2.99 to $5.99 a bag.

Please sign up HERE for a week to make a donation of apples Student Lounge Apple bowl

Then drop them off at school for the week that you volunteered for. You can place them in the blue bowl or leave the bag on Ms. Mauney's desk. (Students can wash their own apples...)

Students and Staff have been enjoying the treat when they appear. Please help with year-end studies and graduation preparations by keeping the Apple Bowl filled.

Thank You!

Linda Campbell, PAC Volunteer Chair

Out of the Box Education

Every Friday during fourth quarter, GWCS freshmen and sophomores are engaged in all-day collaborative and experiential learning activities.  (On the same days, GWCS juniors and seniors are off campus at their R.E.A.L. Term Internships.)

Funds raised from the online auction allow us to provide exciting, challenging, one-of-a-kind learning opportunities (and yummy lunches)! From running actual DNA tests to ziplining—petting a dromedary to paddling the Occoquan Reservoir—OBX offers learning experiences you can’t afford to miss.

(Literally, you really can’t afford to miss OBX days because your grade will suffer, and it’s listed as a separate course on your transcript, and colleges really really love that we offer this class because they expect most of their incoming freshman to be mere receptacles of information that they “learned” from packets and have no real knowledge of the world or experience.)

Thank you to everyone for already turning in your permission form for these seven exciting Fridays:

  • 4-29-16…...Paper Roller Coaster Contest
  • 5-6-16….…Coyote Day
  • 5-13-16…...Team Building at Hemlock
  • 5-20-16…...SciTech Forensics and Maryland Science Center
  • 5-27-16…...Reston Zoo
  • 6-3-16…….Fountainhead Canoe Trip & Naturalist Tour
  • 6-10-16...…University of Mary Washington Tour

A lot of time, planning, thought and effort goes into each of these events.  (Thank you Sharon Saile!)  Every Friday will be packed full of fun and learning!  Students are expected to be at school on time; they will receive a letter grade each week; and at the end of the quarter they will receive 0.25 credit for a class called “Experiential Learning”.   Please do not plan appointments for Fridays.  Each week you will receive a detailed email with instructions from the lead teacher for that week’s event.   Watch for and read these emails carefully for information on what to wear and what to bring as this will change every week.

Yay for experiential learning!
