Next Week at GWCS:
April 30 - May 7, 2016

The student of the week is ALEX CORRIGAN for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT.

Alex brings his best to every part of the school community, whether it's signing up to be a victim actor for CERT, playing shutdown defense in soccer, or participating actively in his classes. His positive, community-oriented attitude helps make our school a better place!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS Values: Learning, Service, Kindness, Excellence, Responsibility, Investment, Team Play, Intellectual Curiosity

PAC #1) Teacher AppreciDATE!

(may 2 – may 6)

Next week, GWCS students and families show their appreciation to our wonderful Coyote teachers and staff!

The Coyote PAC Teacher Appreciation committee has something special planned for each day next week! (We want staff to be surprised, so we are not going to list everything in this newsletter but we will send a summary next week!)

Thank You Cards:  We will be providing students cards to write personal thank you notes to their teachers. We invite parents to do the same!  Please write your notes, seal them into envelopes and put the name of the staff person on the front of the envelope. Send them in with your student no later than Thursday for Friday distribution; there is a collection box on Ms. Mauney's desk!

Many thanks to the parents who are helping out with our Teacher Appreciation week events. If you have any questions, contact teacher appreciation chair Kelly Henderson Hagen at

Pac #2)  graduation memory board party

(may 9 @ 6:30 PM)

The Memory Board tradition at GWCS is a wonderful way to highlight the achievements and good times of graduating seniors on their special day. Please start gathering photographs, memorabilia, and items that reflect your personality, interests, accomplishments and anything that you wish to say and share about yourself and your experiences – here at school and beyond. All items need to be glued or taped to a 3-sided poster board, and Completed Memory Boards are due to the school on Monday, June 13th.

To help students get the process started, a Memory Board Party will be held after school on Monday, May 9th. Senior parents and students are encouraged to attend. Please bring your pictures, poster board and supplies if you are ready to get started. If you are stuck and having trouble feeling inspired, I have lots of ideas and some samples of previous Memory Boards to help inspire you.

Looking forward to seeing you on May 9th!

Thank you for contributing to the Student Lounge Apple Bowl. It has been a success.

For the end of the school year, we have added a list of snack contributions. Particularly for Finals Week! Please take a look at the Apple Bowl link to contribute a treat for the end of the school year.

Thank you for keeping the Coyotes spirit and energy up and running with the pack!

Thank You!

Every Friday during fourth quarter, GWCS freshmen and sophomores are engaged in all-day collaborative and experiential learning activities.  (On the same days, GWCS juniors and seniors are off campus at their R.E.A.L. Term Internships.)

Funds raised from the online auction allow us to provide exciting, challenging, one-of-a-kind learning opportunities (and yummy lunches)! From running actual DNA tests to ziplining—petting a dromedary to paddling the Occoquan Reservoir—OBX offers learning experiences you can’t afford to miss.

(Literally, you really can’t afford to miss OBX days because your grade will suffer, and it’s listed as a separate course on your transcript, and colleges really really love that we offer this class because they expect most of their incoming freshman to be mere receptacles of information that they “learned” from packets and have no real knowledge of the world or experience.)

2016 OBX Schedule

  • 4-29-16…...Paper Roller Coaster Contest
  • 5-6-16….…Coyote Day
  • 5-13-16…...Team Building at Hemlock
  • 5-20-16…...SciTech Forensics and Maryland Science Center
  • 5-27-16…...Reston Zoo
  • 6-3-16…….Fountainhead Canoe Trip & Naturalist Tour
  • 6-10-16...…University of Mary Washington Tour

A lot of time, planning, thought and effort goes into each of these events.  (Thank you Sharon Saile!)  Every Friday will be packed full of fun and learning!  Students are expected to be at school on time; they will receive a letter grade each week; and at the end of the quarter they will receive 0.25 credit for a class called “Experiential Learning”.   Please do not plan appointments for Fridays.  Each week you will receive a detailed email with instructions from the lead teacher for that week’s event.  Watch for and read these emails carefully for information on what to wear and what to bring as this will change every week.
