LOOKING AT NEXT WEEK: October 22-30, 2016

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is NICK O'NEAL for demonstrating the GWCS value of  INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY!

Whether it's revising a paper - just for fun, not for credit - on Russian foreign and economic policy, building his own Napier's Bones from paint stirrers, or making sure temperatures in the lab at night are comfortable for our animals, Nick displays good humored, enthusiastic interest in the world around him.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS VALUES: LEARNING, SERVICE, KINDNESS, EXCELLENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, INVESTMENT, TEAM PLAY, INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY

What's the best way to bring this country together? Food! It also works at GWCS. Celebrate our terrific teachers and staff with  a brunch to end all debates. Please contribute using the Sign-Up Genius so that we can anticipate how much is coming.   There are 14 members of the GWCS faculty and staff at school.  Please plan for your contribution to feed 8 to 10 people.  Someone will be at school by 8 a.m. if you wish to drop off food after dropping at the gym. Mark anything that needs to be returned, please. Help with set-up and clean-up also appreciated, it's included on the sign-up.

PAC #2 - COMPLETE THE CIRCLE

COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2016
11:30 am - 3:30 PM

Join Britepaths (formerly Our Daily Bread) and Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC) for Complete the Circle FOODraiser on Sunday, November 6 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at South County Middle School. We will be participants in creating a meaningful 'Art for the Sky' photo that is encircled with your generous food donations, and enjoy a family fun festival. Complete the Circle is an inspirational community event and volunteer service project to raise awareness and take a stand against hunger and need in the Fairfax County area. The image speaks to our goal of empowering our neighbors who are struggling to move from a place of need to financial self-sufficiency.  (Click Here for a re-cap and photos from GWCS participation in this event last year.)

HOW TO SIGN-UP:

Xavier has already created a GWCS Team which means you do not need to register on the 'Complete the Circle' website, instead:

  • Sign-Up Here for the GWCS CTC Team by October 28th
  • Pay $5.00 cash (per participant) or check payable to 'Britepaths' and give to Ms. Mauney
(FYI - the $5.00 admissions includes a cool t-shirt for the Art for the Sky event if you sign-up early!)
  • Include a note that says 'CTC' and list the names of participants
  • Earn FOUR HOURS of community service
  • Consider donating grocery gift cards as well!  Britepaths will give these directly to families in need.  Donation box located on Ms. Mauney's desk.

FOUR HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE:

Set-up: 11:30 - 1:00 pm

Event time and photo:  1:00 - 2:30 pm

Clean-up:  2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

The event is also a family fun festival! Attendees will enjoy live music by School of Rock Vienna, balloon art by Daisy the Clown, games and kids activities by Junior League of Northern Virginia, face painting, snacks from Cox Farms and more!

*Note:  This CTC event is being sponsored by a GWCS family and is considered an unofficial GWCS community service event.  Participation counts towards community service hours.

#3 PAC - Gift Card FOODraiser:

OCTOBER 28 - NOVEMBER 3, 2016

GOAL:  $600

The GWCS community is coming together to support local families in need by donating grocery gift cards to Britepaths. Send in grocery gift cards (in denominations of $50 or less) and deposit them in the collection box on Ms. Mauney's desk.  Help us meet our goal of $600 in grocery gift cards.  (Preferred cards:  Shoppers Food Warehouse, Giant, Safeway or Walmart)

FROM THE  BRITEPATHS  WEBSITE:

"In the affluent Fairfax County area, a surprising number of people walk a thin line between self-sufficiency and poverty. More than 181,000 (16%) of Fairfax County residents live in or just above poverty. More than 52,000 children (more than 25%) who attend Fairfax County Public Schools qualify to receive free or reduced-price meals.

The families Britepaths serve are working several jobs to make ends meet, but an illness, car repair or other crisis, coupled with the high cost of living in our area, can quickly put them on the brink of hunger and homelessness. Many who turn to Britepaths tell us that they never expected to have to ask for a handout.

Your volunteer and/or financial support for Britepaths’ programs provides help and hope for someone who lives surprisingly close to you. They could be your child’s preschool teacher or bus driver, your local mechanic, grocer, hair stylist or someone down the street who has fallen on hard times."

GWCS FOUNDATION...

THE ANNUAL FUND FOR THE GW COMMUNITY SCHOOL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS NOW OPEN!

PLEASE GIVE!

The Annual Fund at GWCS has been active for over three years, with all money raised going to fund scholarships for current or prospective GWCS students.  The GW Community Foundation was established in 2014 by a group of parents who saw a need to support scholarships at the school.  Many of the parents had transformational experiences with their own children at the school and wanted to make sure that this opportunity was available to other students.  The Foundation has given out three scholarships since it's initial start, and plans on giving out many more!

Donations can be made via online at the foundation website:  www.gwcommunityfoundation.com.  Click on the "Support Us".  You can also make a donation by check made out to GW Community School Foundation.
If you have any questions about the Annual Fund, please contact:

Deiadre Rauch
GWCS Fundraising Chair
deiadrerauch@me.com

Please consider making a donation of any size to our annual fund!  We are aiming, as always, for 100% participation.  Donations made to the GW Community Foundation are tax deductible.

Thank you for your support!

GWCS CLASS RINGS...

Would you like to order a GWCS Class Ring?  All juniors will automatically receive a ring order packet with a glossy brochure.  If you are not a junior but you would like to order a class ring, ask Ms. Mauney for a ring packet.  Ring orders will be collected at GWCS on November 10th during lunch.  A Balfour representative will be at school to answer questions, assist with sizing and help with order forms.  This is a big decision so take some time to look at all of the options!

ITALY SPRING BREAK ...

April 9-17, 2017 (tentative dates)

Dear GWCS Parents / Guardians and Students,

As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is critical for our students to become more culturally aware and globally-minded.  To be able to experience the global classroom first-hand and see what they have been studying in their classes become reality is life-changing and gives them new perspectives not only of themselves but also the world around them.

I’m pleased to announce that Mr. Goldie and I are planning to take students and parents on an educational tour to Italy during the Spring Break, 2017. I am inviting all of the GWCS students, and parents are welcome to travel as well, so there will be a very limited number of spots. Those interested in travelling with us are required to attend the information/enrollment meeting. If you absolutely cannot make it, but are interested in learning more, you will need to come speak to me in person so that we can discuss the details of the trip.

I have chosen to travel with EF because of their reputation as the world leader in international education and because they have far and away the most experience in the industry as well as the broadest reach of any organization. They have been in business for almost 50 years and have local offices in more than 50 countries worldwide. EF guarantees the lowest prices for the highest quality and also offers a flexible monthly payment plan to make the trip more easily affordable.

Mr. Goldie and I will be hosting the information meeting  next Tuesday 25th,  3:15 pm, at the school (Mr. Connelly's classroom), where we will be available to answer all your questions.  See you there!

Regards,

Alejandro Torres
