STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is LOGAN PAWLIK for demonstrating the GWCS value of KINDNESS.

Logan is always in a great mood every morning and is pleasant to all.  Logan’s mood rubs off on others and they are in a better mood for the rest of the day as a result. He does thoughtful tasks for others without being asked and shows kindness indiscriminately. Ms. Newton says "Last week Logan noticed my board was falling apart at the bottom, so he came in the next day with wood screws and a drill and fixed it on the spot. Just because!"

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS Values: Learning, Service, Kindness, Excellence, Responsibility, Investment, Team Play, Intellectual Curiosity

HERE'S WHAT... a weekly message from Ms. Warden who often starts her explanations by saying "here's what..."

HERE'S WHAT...

COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL

Hey, Parents!

Here's a gentle reminder about how to communicate effectively with your GWCS staff: we're done with the the first quarter and thought it appropriate to review protocol so that we can make sure that we are meeting your needs. As you know, at GWCS we strive to communicate openly, honestly, and timely. However, our mission is kid-centered! We are interacting with kids from the moment we arrive at the gym, during our classes, during our lunches, and on the way to our cars in the evening. We pride ourselves on not sitting behind desks or computers. With that in mind, please consider the following:

  1. EMAIL:  When you compose an email, please list one person in the "To" field. That provides us with a clear expectation regarding who should respond. Then, feel free to CC anyone you might think would benefit from receiving the information or questions you are providing.
  2. CALL:  If you choose to communicate via email, please allow 48 hours for a response. If you need more immediate action, please call the school and ask to speak with a member of our administration. Providing the reason for your call will allow your call to be directed to the person who will best be able to assist you.
  3. WHO:  How do you know who to ask for help?
    • If you have questions or concerns about a particular class, email the teacher.
    • If you have overall academic or situational concerns email the advisor.
    • If you feel that you have worked with both the teacher and advisor and need more support, please call the school.
We work as a team at GWCS, and your child's success is our first priority.
  4. GET INVOLVED:  Lastly, as I said at our last PAC meeting, one of the best ways you can optimize your child's experience at GWCS is to get involved yourself! Come in the building to pick your child up and say hello to staff and students. Volunteer for one of our much-needed projects, and feel free to blame me if your kid tells you they want you to have nothing to do with the school! Come to our PAC potluck dinners! Come out to support one of our teams!

Community is so important that we made it our middle name. You are already a part of something wonderful. Take advantage of it! Believe it or not, connections made here last a lifetime.

#2 COMPLETE THE CIRCLE FOODRAISER: ART FOR THE SKY:

PART A:  Advisory Competition:  October 26 – November 6, 2015

GWCS advisories are competing to see which advisory can bring in the most non-perishable goods!  Advisories will collect donations for two weeks:  Monday, October 26 through the end of school on Friday, November 6th.  The non-perishables we collect will be donated to Our Daily Bread and LCAC in an effort to help them reach their goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of non-perishable goods.  The winning advisory will receive a special advisory luncheon as their prize!

Special thanks to GWCS parent Marcelle Miles who works for Our Daily Bread and brought this event to the attention of the Community Service Committee.  Thanks also to Debbie Fuller who volunteered to Chair this event.  Debbie has supplied donation bins for each advisory classroom and she will tally the donations to determine the winning advisory on November 6th.   Other than non-perishable food items (no glass containers) - household items like toiletries and cleaning supplies are in great need . Please, do not donate products with past due expiration dates, open/used containers or damaged cans.

Help Needed:

Marcelle and Debbie will need some assistance packaging the donations and loading them for transport. Please check out the available volunteer slots HERE.  Thank you for volunteering!

PART B:  Art for the Sky on Sunday, November 8, 2015

GWCS families are encouraged to participate in 'Complete the Circle' community service event on Sunday, November 8, 2015.   Any students who would like to participate in the Complete the Circle 'Art for the Sky' photo on November 8th must register as an individual or as a family while there is still space:    https://www.odbfairfax.org/CompleteTheCircle

DO NOT SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS FOR PORTRAIT DAY!

SENIOR PORTRAITS

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2015

http://lifetouch.com/senior-portraits/

SENIOR PORTRAITS:

Each senior family will receive detailed portrait information from Lifetouch in the mail prior to November 9th. The number of poses will depend on the package chosen.

APPOINTMENT TIME:

Senior portraits will be taken at GWCS beginning at 9:30 am on Friday, November 9th.  Seniors should not go to the gym but should be at GWCS no later than 9:15 am.  Some years Lifetouch includes an appointment time on their information - disregard this time as it does not apply to small schools like GWCS.  Seniors will be notified when it is their time to have their portrait taken.

YEARBOOK PHOTO:

All seniors will have a formal yearbook photo taken free of charge - even if they are not purchasing senior portraits from Lifetouch.  Male students will be provided a tux and female students will be provided a drape for the yearbook pose.

WHAT TO BRING:

Seniors may bring their portrait clothes to school on a hanger.  Time to change will be provided.   Depending on the poses chosen, some students will only be photographed from the waist up and other will need to keep in mind what pants and shoes they are wearing as well.  Also, bring makeup, hair doodads, jewelry, and any props for the photo.

PAYMENT INFORMATION:

On senior portrait day, Lifetouch photographers will collect a sitting fee for each senior who plans to order photos.  Sitting fees will vary depending on the package you choose.  Make all checks payable to Lifetouch.  In approximately three weeks after portrait day, you will receive proofs in the mail.  Use those proofs to order through the mail or online at www.prestigeportraits.com.  Remember - all seniors will be photographed for the yearbook even if they are not ordering a package!

NO PORTRAIT MAKE-UP DAY AT GWCS:

There is not an in-school makeup day for senior portraits.  If you are absent, contact Lifetouch directly at 800-445-1191 or send an email to answers@lifetouch.com to schedule a makeup session at one of their studios.

STUDENT ID PHOTOS ON NOV 5TH:

NOTE:  Seniors who would like to have a GWCS Student ID card should have their photo taken on Thursday, November 5th on underclassmen photo day.  The School ID is free of charge and provides students with various retail discounts.  This ID is especially handy for seniors who do not yet have their driver's license.
