WATERSHED CLEANUP

Reminder:  GWCS students are required to earn at least 30 hours (or 7.5 per quarter) of community service by June 17th.  Here's an opportunity to have fun, contribute to the community, and earn 2.5 hours!  Sign Up Today!

Help The Nature Conservancy and Fairfax County Park Authority to clean up your watershed on SATURDAY, APRIL 1st from 9:00 am - 11:30 am. This spring cleaning will remove tires, plastic bottles, cans and other debris from local waterways, preventing trash from reaching the nation’s largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay. The volunteer effort provides a healthy checkup for local waterways and Fairfax County and, by recording what you remove, you’ll be helping scientists, ecologists and environmental organizations in their efforts to improve our environment. Snacks, give-a-ways and other free, fun stuff (like historic house tours and educational opportunities) will take place at the work sites.

ONE DATE, TWO LOCATIONS

  1. Ms. Warden will lead the Riverbend Park Cleanup
  2. Ms Newton will lead the Lake Accotink Cleanup

SCREENAGERS MOVIE...

ABOUT THE FILM

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
