NEXT WEEK AT GWCS... OCTOBER 3-12, 2015

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The Student of the Week is LOEA KANG for demonstrating the GWCS value of INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY!

Mr. Lindner relates: "Today as we began the study of limits in Calculus she got really excited about a very challenging discussion concept.  She asked questions that were exactly the next question to be addressed in the lecture.  She was disappointed when the period ended because she still had questions and wanted to learn more.  She was relieved when I reminded her that she could reread about it and re-watch the videos at home and even read ahead if she wanted to."

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS Values: Learning, Service, Kindness, Excellence, Responsibility, Investment, Team Play, Intellectual Curiosity

PAC PAW PRINTS...

Coyote PAC is a GWCS program designed to more formally incorporate the wealth of parental resources and talents that are so obviously abundant in our community.

Internship Opportunities Needed:

Parents, do you know or work for an organization that invites high school interns? We are looking for new internship opportunities for Spring 2016. Go to http://www.gwcommunityschool.com/internship-program/ and click on the photos to see past and present internships that have been made available to our students. Contact GWCS Internship Coordinator, Kristen Stombres, stombreskl@gwcommunityschool.com, to present your idea, ask questions and for more information.

Coyote Robotics Needs Sponsors:

Parents, do you know or work for an organization that can sponsor our Robotics Teams 965 and 3749? Coyote Robotics is a Northern Virginia non-profit organization that is dedicated to inspiring students to follow careers in math, science, and technology through the fun and engaging FIRST Tech Challenge robotics competition. We are in need of sponsors to support our team's required materials, registration, food and travel expenses. If you can help, contact team Coach Gary Lindner at lindnergt@gwcommunityschool.com.

McKenna's Wagon Sandwich Making:

Parents, the Community Service Committee invites you to join them in making 200 PB&J sandwiches for McKenna's Wagon.

  • DATE:     Monday, October 5, 2015
  • TIME:      8:30 am - 10:30 am
  • WHERE: GWCS

The sandwiches you make will be distributed on McKenna’s Wagon, a volunteer-run, mobile food service that provides hot, nutritious evening meals, sandwiches, fruit, and snacks to 150 - 250 homeless men and women at three locations across the city every night. We also need a volunteer to deliver the food to Martha's Table for McKenna's Wagon afterwards. Please indicate if you can do so on the Sandwich Making for McKenna's Wagon sign-up.

COMMUNITY SERVICE...

tUESDAY
OCTOBER 6, 2015
3:15 PM - 5:00 PM
AUDREY MOORE RECENTER

GWCS will be participating in the Wakefield Run Stream Monitoring Project with the Friends of Accotink Creek this year as a community based project. This program has grant funds attached to it and they have been looking for a group to take it over for quite some time.

This will be an ongoing community service project where students will have the opportunity to collect data using the same methods as both Biologists and Environmental Scientists do. It's also a great excuse to get dirty, get hands on with critters in the stream, and get to know your fellow community members. More on the monitoring process (and the critters we will encounter) used can be found here:

http://www.accotink.org/StreamMonitoring.htm

http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/index.php/conservation/creek-critters

As you can see, there are all kinds of cool apps now that make data collection easy and can be utilized in many ways. This is a unique opportunity for us  to take "ownership" of a natural area and see tangible results as to the impact the surrounding community has on our waterways.

For those interested, our first day will be Tuesday, October 6th at 3:15 pm.  We will be meeting right over in Audrey Moore Rec Center Parking lot. Bring rain boots if you have them as you may get wet! We should wrap up around 5:00 pm.

  • RSVP: NewtonAR@gwcommunityschool.com by Monday,October 5th.
  • TRANSPORTATION:  Students who sign-up in advance will get a ride to Audrey Moore in the school van at 3:15 pm (meet in Ms. Newton's classroom).
  • WEAR:  It's highly recommended students bring tall rain boots as we will probably be walking into the stream.  At the very least wear clothing you are willing to get splashed, dirty, etc.
  • SNACKS:  Provided!
  • PICK-UP:  Parents - plan to pick-up students at Audrey Moore RECenter entrance at 5:00 pm.
