GWCS Foundation Month of Giving

To our wonderful GWCS Community,

On behalf of the GW Community School Foundation, we are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of generosity during our annual fundraising effort.

We are excited to share that in this Month of Giving we have raised just over $23,500  – so close to our goal of $25,000! It's an amazing effort from an amazing community – and we’re not done yet!! There’s still time to make your tax-deductible donation through the GWCS Foundation.

Your donation is a confirmation of the lasting impression GW Community School has made on you and your life. Moreover, your gift through the GWCS Foundation will directly impact the student experience and community at GWCS. We’ve shared quotes from students and alumni each week to highlight that impact; but this week we hear directly from GWCS founders Alexa Warden and Rick Goldie.

GWCS Foundation Month of Giving

Dear GWCS Community,

Thank you so much to those who have already donated to the GW Community School Foundation! Every contribution is tax deductible, and directly supports activities, programs and events that enhance and enrich the GWCS student experience.

We continue our Month of Giving with a focus on Academic Enrichment. This year, donations to the GWCS Foundation are helping to support SLAY: Students Lead Activities - Yay!

GWCS students are currently working on three different projects around the school to better their community:

Creating two terrariums that will be functional and decorative, holding bugs and multiple plant species to decorate the main area of the school

Building a cozy backyard space to gather around a crackling fire, play games, share stories and enjoy nature without leaving the school grounds

Constructing raised garden beds for student-grown vegetables and plants – a passion project that can be used by the school and is also good for the planet

"I've enjoyed SLAY because it's collaborative and I feel like I have a role to play, so it's not just one person doing all the work. I also think it's important to me because I have a responsibility to show up and be an active part of the group. It teaches me to stick to a timeline. Being a part of the raised bed garden project has taught me teamwork, how to build a garden, and also how to build things in general."

–Sophia, GWCS Student

Watch your email for next week’s spotlight on the vibrant GWCS student community, activities and clubs, and how your gift to the GW Community School Foundation can help support these  meaningful, high-impact student experiences. GWCS Foundation Month of Giving

Dear GWCS Community,

It’s that time of year again – for cherry blossoms and our annual GWCS Foundation Month of Giving! As the grateful parents of two 2020 GW Community School graduates, and the current President and Fundraising Chair of the GW Community School Foundation, we know first-hand the importance of the unique and unmatched GWCS student experience.

We are kicking off our Month of Giving once again with the ambitious fundraising goal of $25,000. Throughout the month of March, we’ll share stories about how your donations impact and inspire our GWCS students: they SLAY, have AMAZING DAYS, and MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES to cherish forever.

All donations to the foundation are tax-deductible, and directly impact every GWCS student.

Here are a few examples of the GWCS Foundation’s impact in supporting student enrichment for the 2023-2024 school year:

- Academic Enrichment (SLAY outdoor projects, Experiential Field Trips, Guest Speakers, etc.)

- Trips and Activities including OBX: Out-of-the-Box Learning Experiences, Senior Essay Writing Retreat, Junior Gettysburg trip, Camp Coyote, and more

- Clubs for Theater, Music, Movies, Yearbook, etc.

- GWCS Traditions like Homecoming, Heritage Feast, Event Night and Coyote Day

The GW Community School Foundation is a philanthropic 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2014 by a group of committed parents. The Foundation continues today with a focused goal of providing financial support for programs, activities and events that enhance and enrich the students’ community and educational experience at GWCS.

We welcome your support through the GW Community School Foundation.  To learn more and make your tax-deductible donation, go to gwcsfoundation.org.

With thanks for your support,

Suzanne Parisi | President, GW Community School Foundation

Student-Led Activities - Yay!

This quarter, our students have begun their three different projects around the school to better our community.

Project #1: Terrariums

The SLAY project of this group is creating two terrariums that, when done, will decorate the main area of the school. The containers will be the two aquariums that were once the homes of the school turtles, Grouchy and Sweety, who are now in larger tanks, and are still in the lab. We have moved the two tanks out of where they have resided in storage for months on end, and are working on cleaning them inside and out. Our former budget of $250 was enough that we could do one tank with wiggle room, but the expanded budget of $500 means that we can now turn both former aquariums into terrariums. There will be bugs and multiple plant species that will reside in the terrarium once finished, and we plan to arrange the plants in a way that pleases the eye.

Project #2: FRONT YARD/backyard

Our SLAY group is creating a backyard area! Picture a cozy place where you can gather around the crackling fire, play games, share stories, and enjoy nature without leaving school grounds. It's all about creating a fun and relaxing environment where everyone can unwind and bond. We're going to use our budget to buy games, wood, chairs, a fireplace, and more. We can't wait to see it all come together! If you have any outdoor furniture to donate, please contact GWCS.

do you have tools you’re willing to loan us?

project #3: Raised garden beds

By now you are probably aware of SLAY and the various projects that are a part of it. We are writing this as the raised bed project committee. We are excited to get to work, but money makes the world go round and our world is stagnated. We need 500 dollars in order to complete our project. But why raised beds? Raised beds are a great learning experience and have a positive impact on any community. Student grown vegetables and plants will add an exciting new element to the day. Not only will it be a fantastic passion project, but it is also something that can be used by the school and is good for the planet. If you are interested in helping out the raised bed committee, we will be taking donations of fill dirt, pavers, and grow lights. If you have anything that you think would be of use, please feel free to email evank@gwcommunityschool.com. We can’t wait to add this exciting new development to our community!

The Alexandria Radio Club will be teaching a Technician Level Ham Radio Class starting on Tuesday March 5, 2024  at 7 PM via Zoom.

When: Each Tuesday, beginning March 5, 2024.   The required FCC Exam will be given on the last session on May 7, 2024.

Class Start Time: 1900 hours until 2100 hours (7:00 PM to 9:00 PM)

Teaching Site: via Zoom Meetings.

Cost: There is no charge for the class itself. You will need to get an ARRL Technician License Manual (or General Class Manual if you already have a Technician License) for around $33 plus shipping. We highly recommend you purchase from the ARRL, see HRLM or GCLM, or a ham radio vendor like Ham Radio Outlet or DX Engineering so that you get the current edition of the manual. Amazon vendors do not always send the current edition. There is an ARRL exam fee of $15.00 payable by check or cash on the night of the exam.

Email training@w4hfh.org for additional information or to register for the class. The classes are taught by a cadre of instructors who are FCC Extra Class licensees and former industry and military communications specialists. The FCC License Class Syllabus covers 400 question topics from which 35 pool questions make up the license exam. Classes incorporate ARRL PowerPoint Topics and Film Clips portraying the historical evolution of radio communications.

License practice exam questions are available on the Internet. Learning International Morse Code is no longer an FCC license requirement, but is encouraged.

Event Night is coming!

FRiday, feb. 23 at 6 pm

Half night pick-up: 12 am

full night pick-up: sat. feb 24 at 8 am

What is Event Night? Event Night is where students and teachers spend the night at the school and do cool things like watch movies and play video games and sing songs and become extremely sleep deprived until everything is funny.

Another Ms. N-O throwback!

It is a GWCS Tradition since 2004, and this year it will be happening on FRIDAY, FEB 23.

What’s Event Night? Read on.

Q: Why is it called Event Night?

A: In 2004, the Student Government Association wanted to have a Poker Night. However, it was pointed out that poker is gambling, and gambling is not good for children. So the SGA expanded the night to be about more than poker, which was a good thing. Then we played poker anyway. But we did other things too. No lives were lost (there was a ping-pong war, however), and a GW tradition was born!

Q: Should I go to Event Night?

A: Heck yeah you should go. We usually sell half-night and full-night tickets, so if you're wondering whether Event Night is for you, buy a half-night ticket (good up until midnight), and then you can see.

Q: What kind of movies get shown at Event Night?

A: There's usually at least two movies going at any one time. There is a R-Rated room for terrifying and/or explody movies, and then a different, classic, non-R movie showing on the big screen in the cafe. They movie in the cafe is always a good movie. The movie in the r-rated room is sometimes good, and sometimes so bad it's funny.

Q: What kinds of games get played at Event Night?

A: A lot of video games get played on consoles/computers that people bring in. It's different every year but it's always fun multiplayer games. A lot of board games get played too. And Mr. Goldie usually has a running trivia contest throughout the night.

Q: Will I have a good time?

A: Let me look into my crystal ball. Yes. The crystal ball says you will have a good time, and the crystal ball never lies.

and here’s the boring info:

Note 1 - Before Event Night: If it makes your life easier to just stay at school and wait for Event Night to begin - that's between you and your parents. Staff and students in charge of Event Night will be busy setting up and will not be supervising students who stay after school.

Note 2 - During Event Night: Students will not be allowed to come-and-go. This is a 'lock-down' event. If you need to arrive or leave at a time other than what's listed above - you will need to get special permission from Ms. N-O.

SIGN UP:

Limited space is available due to a strict student/teacher ratio. Reserve a spot on the exclusive Event Night attending list by providing Ms. N-O cash or a check (payable to GWCS) ASAP! Once you have paid your dues, Ms. N-O will add you to the most exclusive list.

If you have any outdoor furniture to donate, please contact GWCS.

project #3: Raised garden beds

Congratulations to CERT Team 185!

I am so incredibly proud of our CERT Team 185! After a semester of studying, practicing, and preparing, each member of CERT TEAM 185 passed their grueling 8-hour live "mass disaster" training. They are all now qualified to continue taking classes at the Fire Training Academy—more information will be included in next week's WYNK. Team 186 will take part in the Stop the Bleed course here at school this January. Please be sure to congratulate them! Team 186 wishes this semester's CERT recruits the best of luck.

Love,

Ms. Warden

Dear GWCS Community,

Thank you so much for your past support of the GWCS Foundation and – as a result – our GW Community School students. We would love for you to keep the GWCS Foundation in mind during this 2023 season of giving.

In the first half of the school year, your tax-deductible contributions have directly supported activities, programs and events that enhance and enrich the GWCS student experience, including:

Camp Coyote | Sept. 29

Junior Gettysburg Film & Tour | Oct. 12 - 13

Senior Essay Writing Retreat | Oct. 17-19

School Spirit Week & Homecoming | Nov. 13 - 17

It was a special year for the Senior Essay Writing Retreat. Along with the 16 soon-to-be graduates, GWCS Director of Operations Maria Nunez-Oliver (second row, far right) first attended the retreat 10 years ago as a GWCS student and this year attended as a faculty member.

“Ten years ago exactly I went on my own GWCS Senior Essay Writing Retreat, and was immediately hyper-aware of two things: first, I was going to college, and second, I had to figure out something to write about. Three days and a million memories later, I had written, edited, conferenced, drank pounds of coffee sludge thanks to Hank Thomson (with a healthy five scoops of coffee to six oz of water ratio), and came out of the woods of Lake Anna with something that seemingly summarized the experience of my 17 young years.

Now, exactly ten years later, I was able to take the Senior Class of 2023 to their own writing retreat and (metaphorically, since we often sit in rocking chairs) be on the other side of the table.  The coffee was far better (thanks to Joe Parisi), but the camaraderie, inside jokes, and smiles were far more memorable. And this time I didn’t even have to write anything!”   ~ Ms. N.O.

As we approach the end of 2023 and you think about what you’re grateful for, we hope you’ll consider the GWCS Foundation for any charitable gifts. Every contribution is tax-deductible, and has a direct and immediate impact on each and every GW Community School student.

Reminder: Take a minute to check your company's matching gift program to see if your employer will match your donation and double your impact.

Thank you again for your generous support. We wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season!

With thanks for your support,

Kim Dwyer

PAC Faculty Appreciation Event: Cookie Carry! 12/13

Hi GWCS Families -

Wednesday, December 13th, the Teacher Appreciation Committee is having a Holiday Cookie Carry to show our appreciation for the wonderful GWCS Teachers and Staff!

We would love for your family to make a batch of your favorite cookies (or other sweet or salty treats) to share at the cookie carry. Wednesday morning Melissa Koenig will be at Audrey Moore from 7:50 to 8:20 to collect contributions, or you can bring them directly to the school.

GWCS staff members will drop by the staff kitchen during the day to make themselves a platter of treats to take home. Whether they share with family and friends is up to them.

If you would like to contribute, please indicate what you are planning to bring on the Signup Genius. Do not let the term "cookie" limit you. Please send treats in non-breakable containers or platters. If you need your containers returned, please label them with your student’s full name.

Contact Melissa Koenig (mksoph@yahoo.com) if you have any questions.

Save the Date: Tuesday, November 21st 10:00 am to 12:00 pm! It's the...Heritage Feast!

The Heritage Feast is a GWCS tradition that began in 2010 when a student asked Ms. Warden if the GWCS family could have a Thanksgiving dinner together at school.  Ms. Warden (who always says yes to a good pot-luck dinner) endorsed the idea and a tradition was born.

In the beginning, families contributed their favorite traditional Thanksgiving dish.  A few years ago, to celebrate the diversity of our school community, we spiced it up by asking families to send in food that represented their heritage and changed the name to Heritage Feast.  Ms. Warden also created a catchy Heritage Feast jingle that echoes around school all November-long!

NOVEMBER 10-12, 2023

GWCS students in grades 9-12 are invited to join Mr. Goldie and Ms. N-O on a road-trip down to Staunton, Virginia to take-in three Shakespeare plays, learn Shakespearean staging, tour the only recreation of the Blackfriar’s theatre in the world, eat at Staunton’s best restaurants, have a tour of Polyface Farms, consume ice cream and baked goods every night, and still have time to wander around the historic downtown in between it all.

THE SHOWS:

Much Ado About Nothing

Coriolanus

Hamlet

In order to secure our rooms/tickets/dinner reservations we need a headcount to work with, so please sign-up quickly by bringing a check for $649.00 to school and giving it to Ms. Nuñez-Oliver or Mr. Goldie.  We only have 12 spots available - they will fill-up quickly and tickets are limited!

PLEASE NOTE: This trip is exclusively open to 9th-12th graders, ensuring an age-appropriate and enjoyable experience for all participants. Additionally, we will only be able to offer trip spots to students and unfortunately will not have availability for parents or guardians to accompany students this year. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to providing our high school students with a memorable adventure.
