ATTENTION GWCS JUNIORS…

Every fall, the GWCS junior class heads north to Gettysburg. It is not truly analogous to Lee’s march on Gettysburg in 1863, but we mention it. Of course, we ride on highways through rolling hills and arrive in good condition and good spirits in less than three hours, and Lee’s troops arrived after a forty day March, but still, the similarities are undeniable.” ~ Richard Goldie 2016

Take the PSATs & SATs @ GWCS…

PSAT Testing date: Wednesday, Oct. 12

SAT Testing date: Wednesday, Oct. 12

Please note that there is no gym Wednesday, Oct. 12. Students should report directly to school at GWCS at 9:15 am!

This year we are offering the SAT through the SAT School Days program alongside the PSAT. This means that we will be administering the test on a weekday, expanding access to a globally recognized college admission test that's widely accepted at U.S. colleges. This is a great opportunity for those who haven’t yet taken it a first time, those who may want to retake it (and see if they get a higher score – they’ll submit your highest to colleges), or even Sophomores who feel comfortable with the PSAT and feel ready to try out the SAT.

Click to learn more about SAT

Click to learn more about PSAT

The PSAT will be offered this year for any underclassmen (grades 9-11) who would like to take the PSAT.

Stressed about what’s on the test?  Khan Academy has some great, free PSAT/SAT prep– you can find it HERE.

We will send more information about test-day policies, what to bring, and day-of schedules to students who are participating in testing next week.

Synopsis from IMDB:

"A year after her mother's death, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends started experiencing some strange phone calls. They later learned the calls were coming from a crazed serial killer, in a white faced mask and a large black robe, looking for revenge. His phone calls usually consist of many questions, the main one being: What's your favorite scary movie? Along with much scary movie trivia, ending with bloody pieces of innocent lives scattered around the small town of Woodsboro."

Coyote Café is back!

From Ms. Kohler’s email:

Coyote Café is the school store run by the Personal Finance class that we hold every Thursday at lunch. Customers can come to the Staff Kitchen window and order pizza, snacks, and beverages! Proceeds help fund school projects and student led assemblies. Last year we had a Winter Celebration with a live comedian for entertainment and a Spring Palooza with a petting zoo!

This is an entirely cash run store, so please send your student with cash to purchase goods (patronage at the store is entirely optional).

***POLICY CHANGE: Please note we will not be operating with IOUs this year. This year you are not allowed to go into debt, you must pay for everything at the time of purchase. You are allowed to do a credit system where you give me cash directly and we will track your spending from that deposit, but you are no longer allowed to go into the negatives.

We look forward to seeing you Thursdays at lunch!

GWCS Clubs and Electives begin Monday, September 12th!

GWCS is proud to offer a unique array of club and elective opportunities afterschool.

Most of these electives and clubs meet once per week during 7th period – but not all, and the best place to confirm times and dates is on the GWCS Calendar. We encourage all students to try at least one (or more). An elective is a class which means attendance is taken and grades and credit are earned. Clubs are more casual, and students do not earn grades or credit. So, come out and kick around a soccer ball, contribute to the GWCS Yearbook, experience history through HIM, build a robot, or maybe venture into acting, photography, sports, or hiking. Explore the variety of electives and clubs GWCS has to offer!

See the elective and clubs descriptions here. Please note that dates are subject to change depending on teacher availability and student interest.

As a friendly reminder, we have updated our Parent-Student Handbook policy on remote learning.

Excerpt from the “Attendance Policies” page:

ATTENDANCE

Students should make every effort to attend class. If a student is ill or otherwise unable to attend class, the parent or guardian must alert the school with written notice before 9:00 am to alert us to the absence. Parents and guardians may contact the school in the following ways:

· Use the Attendance Reporting Form on the attendance page of the GWCS website.

· Email Ms. Nunez-Oliver, Mr. Mallonee, and the student’s advisor, as well as any other teachers who will be directly affected by their absence

· It has proven difficult for both students and teachers to hold hybrid classes daily. Hybrid classes do a disservice to the in-person students in the classroom: teachers taking class time to try to connect with virtual students, teachers attempting to upload materials so that virtual students can access them, virtual students taking an inordinate amount of the teacher's time and attention trying to access materials. Hybrid classes can be frustrating for the virtual student for the reasons mentioned above. Virtual student engagement proved to be the exception rather than the rule last year.

· Students who need to miss school for illness will have ample time to make up assignments that are necessary to the mastery of the course. Students may meet with teachers or peer tutors during afternoon advisory or request alternative assignments.

The full pdf it can be found on the Parent Portal here.

It is very important that we have this completed form without delay. Students who completed this form over the summer do not need to complete it again unless there are changes. We recommend downloading and completing this MS Word version of the Emergency Form so that you can save it to your computer and make and submit changes as needed during the school year.

OBX DETAILED INFO - ALL EIGHT WEEKS
  • From: Nunez-Oliver, Maria
    Sent: Thursday, March 31, 2022 1:04 PM
Subject: GWCS: OBX Info and Permission Forms

    Hello all,

We are excited about our first OBX the Friday we return from spring break!  Here are a few more details on the academics of OBX:

OBX (Outside the Box Education) is our experiential learning component. Students earn credit for participating. It’s our way of addressing all the skills that don’t fall neatly into a box in the traditional high school curriculum.  Traditionally, OBX events are every Friday during 4th quarter for freshmen and sophomores while juniors and seniors are at their Co-Ops.  This year we have opened up OBX to everyone and have a jam-packed schedule!  OBX is a class and therefore attendance is taken, grades are earned, and 0.25 elective credit will be given.  Students MUST attend ALL OBX events in order to earn the credit.  If a student misses one or more OBX events, they will not receive credit but will be expected to attend any remaining OBX events and “Experiential Learning” will be listed on their transcript without awarded credit.

Attached to this email is the full info sheet on all our OBX activities for this year, as well as a permission form that needs to be signed and returned no later than Wednesday, April 13th.  We have two activities that both require their own separate waivers, and we will be sending out separate emails with those linked closer to the date of the activity.

Also, since so many of our OBXs are going to be off-campus, we are looking for some parent drivers - check out the Sign Up Genius here!

Thank you in advance and we’re excited to have a great fourth quarter with you all!

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED…

SENIOR FESTIVITIES & GRADUATION

At GW Community School, graduation is a community-wide event. This year, we are continuing our newly minted tradition of hosting graduation here, in our parking lot.

Graduation volunteers are usually underclassmen parents, but occasionally senior parents want to help as well.  We've created a list of volunteer opportunities, but our most pressing needs are for a parent to steam/iron our graduation gowns, help hang memory boards, or decorate our hallways as a tribute to our seniors.

Please review all of the volunteer opportunities below and sign up to help:

CLICK HERE TO VIEW & SIGN UP FOR PARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Thank you all and I look forward to working with you to make this graduation wonderful!

FAIRFAX PARKS CLEANUP OPPORTUNITIES…

The events listed below will not be chaperoned by GWCS staff, but we thought i these might provide good opportunities for coyote families to find community service events close to home.

Email Received 3.12.2022 from The Nature Conservancy:

I’m Josh, a volunteer coordinator with The Nature Conservancy.  We are partnering with county parks to do a wonderful watershed cleanup around 15 different Fairfax county parks!  Registration for the annual Fairfax County Watershed Cleanup is now available at www.nature.org/fairfaxcleanup.  We need nearly 500 volunteers to help clean up plastic bottles, cans and other debris. It’s a great way to give back to the community, and it’ll be a pretty fun day as well!

Event capacity is limited, and we request that you register individually or in family units. Before registering a large group of 10+ people, please double check that everyone in your group is committed and will attend. Subject: Fun Parent Party for Planning Graduation

Hi all,

It was so great to see so many of you at last week's March Madness party! Thanks so much to all who planned and participated. We would love to keep the fun and spirit alive, so we will be having another party next Thursday, April 28th from 2:15-3:15 with the aim of nailing down some graduation details and volunteers. Light refreshments will be served:)

Graduation at GWCS is one like no other! It is a whole school celebration and every student has a part to play. We also rely heavily on the help from our amazing parent community. Don't worry, almost all of the planning has been done, we just need some muscle, management, and minds--great ones, that is:)

This year graduation will be held outside the school on Saturday, June 11th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Please let me know if you will be able to join us next Thursday!

2022 GWCS RAGLAN T-SHIRTS…

GWCS VALUES FOR SALE!

Traditions.  Traditions are important.  Few more so than the annual GWCS tee shirt.  In most school years there are multiple shirts created (in October you received a nice yellow one designed by Maria that said ‘Camp Coyote’ on the  front).  But only one tee in a given year is THE annual tee.  The one that includes a reminder of the number of years that GWCS has been alive and well and living in the basement of an office building in Springfield, Virginia.

This year was no exception!  Beautiful, blue raglans!  They arrived last Wednesday.  By the end of the day, the majority of them were already being worn around the school.  How many years of GWCS are being honored by this shirt?  One glance at the design should give it away!

Due to the imploring requests of many parents at the March Madness party, we are making them available to all for $20. Claim yours today by clicking the button below.

Deadline to place your order: April 29, 2022

MARCH MADNESS PARTY & AWARDS…

SO NICE TO SEE YOU!

It was quite a celebration!  In honor of March Madness, Tee Shirt Day, and the Pac Resurrection, we were all invited to the school for a ‘buffet and social’ to get reacquainted last Wednesday, April 14, 2022!  We had a sensational turnout with more than half of our coyote parents in attendance.  It was so nice, after so long, to finally be able to have a full house in the middle of the school (and be able to fully see so many faces!)!

Jon Stoloff, who sponsored the basketball pool for the GWCS staff, announced the winners from the tournament.  The winners were Mr. Mallonee and Mr. Connelly!  Mr. Mallonee actually won both brackets, but to share the wealth, Mr. Connelly got a prize for his second place entrance!  They both received tee shirts from their alma maters and basketball themed mugs!

As far as the in-school pool, only one person chose Kansas (the tournament winner), and when Kansas won, Ms. Kohler won!  Sam Peters submitted the highest scoring student bracket!  They both won $25.00 gift cards.  The final prize, a $10 dollar gift card went to Ms. Warden, for a prize known as the ‘congeniality award,’ which goes to the entry with the fewest correct picks.  Ms. Warden accepted her gift with grace, and then gave the most inspiring last-place-finish speech the crowd had ever heard.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you at future PAC events coming soon!

Mr. Goldie

This prevents us from situations where one group takes half the available spaces and then cancels last-minute, and we have no one to fill in.

MARCH MADNESS PARTY…

Thursday, April 14, 2022
2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

A March Madness celebration in April is almost as good as Christmas in July!   The PAC sponsored a March Madness basketball contest for the GWCS Faculty.   Alas, the Final Four happened during Spring Break, so we’re partying after break! All FAMILIES ARE INVITED to join faculty and students to mingle and to award our faculty winners on Thursday, April 14 from 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm at school.  This is a great time to chat with other families, since our opportunities to do so have been so limited the past couple of years.

PLEASE RSVP here:

GOT MILK? WE NEED EMPTY GALLON JUGS…

Please :)

Planning is well underway as we gear up for our 2022 OBX (Out of the Box) Fourth Quarter Fridays! In preparation, we are asking for empty gallon milk jug donations for one of our many Coyote Day activities which focuses on GWCS School Values and involves building totem poles.

Donated milk jugs can be put in either the little kitchen next to Mr. Lindner’s classroom or in Ms. Kohler’s science lab. We would greatly appreciate the jugs being rinsed out before donating.

ATTENTION SENIORS…

For your final months of high school, it will be very important for you to watch the WYNK for things that you will need to do to prepare for graduation and beyond.

Senior Graduation Memory Boards

DUE: 5.25.2022

This is one of GWCS’ favorite traditions! Each senior family creates a Memory Board of photos and memorabilia to celebrate their senior. Click the button below for detailed instructions and examples. Memory Boards are due on May 25, 2022 and will be hung in the main GWCS hallway for the last few weeks of school and be available to view on graduation day. This may seem a long ways away but, it’s not! It will take an effort and some time for you to collect all the photos, lettering, and other supplies you will need to create your Memory Board.

This prevents us from situations where one group takes half the available spaces and then cancels last-minute, and we have no one to fill in.

Please follow this link at www.nature.org/fairfaxcleanup and sign up.

Spring has sprung! Let’s celebrate with your best veg-based food, fit for well… rabbits. Or alternatively, rabbit-themed. You could really take this theme creatively! We were thinking salads, seasonal vegetables, or even carrot cake? So many possibilities!

Any food that needs to be refrigerated can be placed in the student fridge, and anything else can be kept in Ms. Warden's office for safekeeping. We have microwaves and a large toaster oven for anything that needs to be reheated.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING...

Every Friday During 4th Quarter!

OBX (Outside the Box Education) is an eight-week program that takes place every Friday during fourth quarter.  This year, we’re opening it up to all students, rather than in previous years where it’s only been Freshmen and Sophomores.   This year, students will be on and off-campus for collaborative and experiential learning activities.

Please do not schedule doctor appointments for Fridays during 4th Quarter.  We have an exciting lineup of events for all of our Fridays.  Watch for an email in April with more detailed information about all the OBX objectives as well as what to wear and what to bring!

Below is our tentative OBX schedule for Spring 2022 -  all dates and activities are subject to change; some activities may be weather-dependent.

Updated 3.27.2022

  • April 15 - American Indian Museum

  • April 22 - Old Town Alexandria Walking Tour

  • April 29 - Planet Word Museum

  • May 6 - Coyote Day

GOT MILK? SEND US YOUR GALLON JUGS…

New to GWCS? Not sure what OBX is all about? Click Here.

  • April 15 - African American Museum

  • April 22 - Old Town Alexandria Walking Tour

  • April 29 - Planet Word Museum

  • May 6 - Coyote Day

  • May 13 - The Edge

  • May 20 - First Aid/CPR/AED

  • May 27 - Canoeing in Front Royal

  • June 3 - Gunston Hall

ATTENTION SENIORS…

For your final months of high school, it will be very important for you to watch the WYNK for things that you will need to do to prepare for graduation and beyond. These first two items are an opportunity to reminisce.

GWCS GRADUATION WEBPAGE

#1 - Senior BABY/Childhood Photo

Due: 3.31.2022

Please email Ms. N-O a baby or early childhood photo of yourself by Thursday, March 31, 2022. These photos will be used on your senior page in the yearbook (example) and for another senior activity this spring. If you do not have (or can not create) a digital copy, bring Ms. N-O the original and she will scan and return it to you.

#2 - Senior Graduation Memory Boards

DUE: 5.25.2022

This is one of GWCS’ favorite traditions! Each senior family creates a Memory Board of photos and memorabilia to celebrate their senior. Spring Break would be a great time to get started on this fun project. Start today and have fun with this walk down memory lane.

This prevents us from situations where one group takes half the available spaces and then cancels last-minute, and we have no one to fill in.

Please follow this link at www.nature.org/fairfaxcleanup and sign up.

ATTENTION ALL GWCS JUNIOR & SENIOR FAMILIES…

REGARDING YOUR DECISION: CO-OPS -or- OBX

Roger Muntu at Voice of America in 2019 with GWCS student intern, Ciara O’Brien. Yes, the same Roger Muntu who used to teach at GWCS and still DJs GWCS dances! https://www.voanews.com/

Email sent 3.9.2022

From: Nunez-Oliver, Maria
Sent: Wednesday, March 9, 2022 2:21 PM
To: Junior Parents, Senior Parents
Subject: Internships for Juniors and Seniors

Hi all,

A couple of things regarding internships this coming spring.  As I mentioned in my previous email and in the WYNK, this year we are asking you and your students to set up their internship for fourth quarter, but because of the extent of OBX programming we are doing this year, I will need to know if your student is participating in either OBX or has a confirmed internship no later than April 1, 2022. If I have not received a confirmation of internship with the following information, I will be enrolling your student in OBX for fourth quarter.

I’ve spoken to some of our previous contacts, and unfortunately due to a mix of COVID-precautions, people working remotely, and other circumstances, most of our former contacts for internships are unable to host a GWCS intern this year.  We had expected that this would happen, so this year I am doing my absolute best to keep us off-campus and having big experiences for our OBXs this spring.  Please note that either option your student will be receiving an Elective/Career Tech credit for, and many of our Juniors and Seniors have never participated in GWCS’ OBX pre-covid, so they will have a far different experience this year should they opt to be in OBX.

Some things to keep in mind when it comes to organizing internships for your child:

  • Internships must occur on Fridays, starting April 15th and having their last day be June 3rd

  • Organizations should have our interns be on site from somewhere between 8 am and 5 pm

  • When you have organized an internship for your student, please send me the following information:

  1. Organization Name

  2. Organization Type

  3. Main Point of Contact for Internship & Their Contact Information

  4. Address & Phone Number

  5. Start/Stop Time for Interns (if you know it- otherwise I will ask them directly)

I will then be reaching out to the student’s supervisor/contact at their internship for some follow up questions for us to keep on file.

I know I’ve already spoken with some of you, but please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions regarding the internship program.

Warmly,
Maria

Maria "M" Nuñez-Oliver (she/her)
Director of Operations

Note: 4th Quarter Experiential Learning Fridays at GWCS are mandatory and students do earn credit. The option offered this year is for juniors and seniors to choose between OBX and Co-Ops.
