MASKS OPTIONAL…

EFFECTIVE MARCH 1, 2022

Subject: Changes to Universal Masking for ALL Starting March 1

Good morning, Coyotes and families!

This morning during Community Advisory, Ms. Warden announced that we will be following FCPS’ guidance on changing mask policies following the updated health guidance by the CDC.  With the new guidance, Fairfax County’s current COVID-19 community level is low.

Based off this new guidance, we are going to begin to allow our community members to make a choice whether they will wear a mask starting tomorrow, Tuesday, March 1.

Last week we began discussing with students and staff what their concerns and thoughts were on the change, but ultimately we will be leaving it up to students and their families to decide what is best for them. One of our core values is Responsibility, so with this policy change, we would like to remind our community that continuing to do your part by monitoring for illness and staying home when sick will keep our community healthy and thriving.  As a reminder, our current COVID guidelines for positive tests and exposures can be found here.

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Warmly,

Ms. N-O

Subject: Co-Op Internships Contacts!

Realistic Education and Authentic Learning Co-Ops is a hallmark of a GWCS education - this nine-week program (every Friday during the fourth quarter) allows GWCS high school juniors and seniors to actively participate in the world of work. Internships, job shadows, and volunteer positions are individually matched with our students according to their talents, interests, and skills.

Although we haven't been able to do them in recent years due to COVID, we are very excited to return to Co-Ops this spring for any Juniors and Seniors who would like to participate.  Because we know that some offices are still not back to being fully in-person and may not be willing to take on an intern, this year Juniors and Seniors who are not able to find an internship may participate in OBX for credit.  Unlike previous years, however, we are going to require students and their families to set up their internships individually but are happy to offer our community resources for possible contacts.

So - the ask:

If you have any professional contacts/companies/organizations who would be willing to have an intern every Friday from April 15th - June 3rd, please add them in the form linked below!    I will be polling the Juniors and Seniors shortly to see what their interests are, but my hope is that if we have enough input from our community, it will be easy to connect them with an appropriate organization.

SUPER BOWL SQUARES WINNERS…

Last Sunday, February 13, 2022, the GWCS students and staff played a game called “FOOTBALL SQUARES” during Super Bowl LVI! The Los Angeles Rams vs. the Cincinnati Bengals were well matched teams which resulted in an exciting game that could have gone either way in the final moments. But, the Rams scored the winning title, get the ring, and a nice little bonus. Ever wonder how much money the Super Bowl Champs receive? Feel bad for the Bengals for losing? Well, read this Sporting News article all about who wins how much and when.

Super Bowl Squares Game Winners Pictured Above: Mr. Comstock, Riggs, and Jay

THE GWCS WINNERS OF SUPER BOWL SQUARES:

  • First Quarter: Rams 7, Bengals 3

COMMERCIALS:

And, which were the best and the worst of the $6.5 million per 30 second Super Bowl commercials this year? Did you have a favorite? According to CBS News:

“A panel of experts at the Kellogg School graded the ads on business-related metrics, such as whether the ad was memorable and unique as well as whether it tied into brand messaging.”

The best ads this year include Coinbase, whose striking ad featured a QR code floating across the screen, Kellogg said. The ad, which dangled a free $15 bitcoin giveaway, drove enough viewers to Coinbase to crash the site.”

Other top-ranked ads, based on Kellogg's panel assessment, included:

“Two commercials earned the worst grade, an "F," from the Kellogg School:”

Read the full CBS News article to see grades Kellogg School gave to all 66 Super Bowl commercials! The results for the USA Today Ad Meter had different winners and losers. Their results are based on votes placed by more than 100,000 viewers.

Link to form:

SUGGESTIONS NEEDED: CO-OP CONTACTS FORM

4TH QUARTER EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING - OBX & Co-ops

Note: 4th Quarter Experiential Learning Fridays at GWCS are mandatory and students do earn credit. The option offered this year is for juniors and seniors to choose between OBX and Co-Ops.

Thank you in advance for your help and support!

PALENTINE’S DAY RESULTS…

Thank you to all the students, parents, and staff who participated in the annual Palentine’s Day Celebration sponsored by Ms. Kohler’s Personal Finance Class.

Palentine's Day was a huge success! Parents, teachers, fellow peers sent very thoughtful personalized cards, roses, and candies to be delivered during 4th period. The gestures brought smiles to so many faces and made the very cold February day warm and bright here in GWCS! Shout out to Mr. Lindner, Alex Roach, and the PAC for their large contributions to the fundraiser! We raised over $250! This money is intended for our annual outdoor GWCS Palooza, where this year the students want a petting zoo

WE ARE PLAYING SUPER BOWL SQUARES…

NFL SUPER BOWL LVi
SUPER SunDAY, Feb. 13, 2022
6:30 p.m. ET (NBC)

GWCS students and staff are playing a game called “FOOTBALL SQUARES” during this coming Sunday’s Super Bowl! You may think the game is between the National Football Conference champion Los Angeles Rams and the American Football Conference champion Cincinnati Bengals, but the real competition is between the GWCS Coyotes shown in the chart below.

As you can see, GWCS Coyotes signed their name in multiple squares on the Super Bowl Squares chart. At the end of each quarter of the Super Bowl, the last digit of the score from each team corresponds to a box, The Coyote whose name is within that box will win a $25 gift card!! There is the potential to win up to $100 since there are four quarters in the game!

Watch the game on NBC, Peacock, stream it, follow it on Twitter (@NFL) or Instagram (@nflsuperbowl2022), however you prefer to keep track of who's winning the big buck$!

If you’re not a football fan… remember, there’s always the crazy commercials which this year cost $6.5 million per 30-second commercial! Crazy! Which is your favorite? Cheetos? Budweiser? Pepsi? Maybe one of the new Cryptocurrency ads will make you laugh this year?

Speaking of crazy, did you know that the average 2022 Super Bowl ticket costs $6,000.

What about the halftime show? This year, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar will be performing. These five artists have a combined 22 number one Billboard albums and 44 Grammy Awards. Expect half-time to air between 8:00 pm - 8:30 pm ET.

And, everyone’s favorite part — Super Bowl food! What are your favorites? Here are 83 Super Bowl Foods That Are Better Than A Touchdown!

COVID-19 MASK UPDATE…

UPDATED GWCS covid GUIDELINES

EXCERPT OF email sent 1.24.2022

From: Nunez-Oliver, Maria
Sent: Monday, January 24, 2022 2:11 PM
Subject: COVID-Counter Measures and Guidelines - UPDATE 1.24

In addition to following the below protocols for illness/quarantine policies, we wanted to remind our community that we will still be requiring students and staff to wear masks at all times except when eating. Our school's administration agree with the CDC's recommendations that masking is a critical public health tool for preventing the spread of COVID-19, and we urge our community to wear the most protective mask they can that fits well, is worn properly, and that is comfortable enough to wear consistently all day.

As always, thank you for being apart of this community and we look forward to seeing what third quarter has in store!

Warmly,

EMAIL SENT 1.12.2022

From: Nunez-Oliver, Maria
Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2022 4:16 PM
Subject: COVID-Counter Measures and Updated Guidelines

Hello all,

Considering the emerging COVID-19 omicron-variant outbreak in our area, we have decided to update some of our guidelines to keep our community as safe as possible.

After reviewing both Fairfax County Public Schools and the guidelines of other schools in our area, we are deviating from some of the CDC guidelines in an effort to avoid transmission at GWCS.

Please review the updated rules regarding COVID below:

  • If a student exhibits COVID symptoms at school, they will be sent home.

  • Students sent home with COVID symptoms may return to school when the following are met:

    • The student is fever-free without fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours AND

    • The student no longer has symptoms

    • If symptoms persist – we highly suggest:

      • Getting a COVID test to show negative test result (either Antigen, Rapid Antigen, or PCR test) OR

      • Getting a clinical evaluation from a healthcare provider that offers an alternate diagnosis to COVID

  • If a student has had a close contact to exposures and are asymptomatic, the student may return to school when the following are met:

    • Student completes 5 days of quarantine AND

    • Student is asymptomatic AND

    • Student returns to school and wears a face mask properly for days 6-10

      • Students who display a pattern of failing to wear a mask correctly will be sent home at the discretion of GWCS administration

      • Upon returning to school, students will also be required to eat lunch in a room by themselves, but they may socialize (masked) after eating

  • Students who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 may not return until all of the following have been met:

    • It has been at least 10 days since the student first had symptoms (for symptomatic students) or 10 since testing positive (day the test was administered) for COVID (for asymptomatic students) AND

    • The student is fever-free without fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours AND

    • The student no longer has symptoms

We’ve stayed opened previously during the height of the COVID pandemic, so we hope that these guidelines will assist us in continuing to keep our classes in person, and keep our community safe.

Thank you for reading, and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Warmly,

Maria "M" Nuñez-Oliver

OUI GOBLEU COOKING CLUB…

MEATLESS MONDAY!

Monday, January 31, 2021
During Lunch

GWCS is going Meatless!  Meatless Monday is a global movement that encourages people to reduce meat in their diet for their health and the health of the planet. The campaign was originally started in 2003 by Sid Lerner in association with the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future- to find out more click here.

We figured, with the new year, and new resolutions, why not try out something that’s good for both us and the planet?  Bring your favorite no-meat dish on Monday and we’ll be meeting at lunch to share and see what we think about meat-free options.  If you’re bringing a dish that needs to be refrigerated, you can put it in the staff kitchen fridge, otherwise, please place it in Ms. Warden’s office for safekeeping before lunch.

Warmly,

Maria "M" Nuñez-Oliver

COLLEGE & CAREER COUNSELING…

Dear GWCS Parents,

I’m Beth Goldstein, a former GWCS parent.  As part of a career shift, I am getting a Certificate from UCLA in Educational Counseling.  The Certificate program includes volunteering as a college counselor for a Practicum quarter.  I am glad to be able to provide my volunteer hours to GWCS families.

I would be happy to set up FaceTime or Zoom meetings with students and/or parents for the college or career planning most useful to each student.

For most GWCS students, I expect that career and personality testing and discussions would be most useful.  If a student prefers, we can focus on how to find and explore college paths for a student’s particular interests or priorities or, especially for seniors, prepare for interviews.

Options to consider:

  • Career and personality testing and evaluation

  • Interview preparation

  • Gap year consideration

  • Special issue exploration (e.g., arts preparation or LGBTQ-friendliness)

  • College readiness preparation

Most of our work would be in January and February, but if a student would benefit from meeting sooner – for example, for interview preparation – I am happy to find an earlier time.

Please email me at goldsteinb@gwcommunityschool.com or call or text me at 914-391-9080 to start a conversation about the most helpful approach for your family.

Go Coyotes!

TRY SOMETHING NEW SECOND SEMESTER…

GWCS offers a generous selection of electives and clubs.  Most take place during 7th period (3:15 pm - 4:15 pm) -- but not all.

An elective is a class which means attendance is taken and grades and credit are earned.  Clubs are more casual, and students do not earn grades or credit.  So, come out and experience history through HIM-NAP, build a robot, or maybe venture into acting, cooking, or hiking.

If a student is not participating in a 7th period elective or club on any given day, their pick-up time is 3:15 pm or they should go to the pick-up location designated on their emergency form.

GWCS AFTER SCHOOL Clubs:

  1. Music Club with Sr. Torres (Thursdays)

  2. Oui Gobleu Cooking Club with Ms. Warden (one Monday per month)

  3. Outdoors Club with Ms. N-O (Days Vary)

GWCS AFTER SCHOOL Electives:

  1. History in Movies Elective with Mr. Goldie (Tuesdays)

  2. Robotics Elective with Mr. Lindner (Thursdays & Saturdays + Tournaments)

  3. Spring Theatre with Mr. Goldie (Wednesdays)

  4. Yearbook Elective with Mr. Goldie (Mondays)

Questions?

Talk with the teacher in charge of the club or elective. If you decide to signup for (or drop) an elective - remember to complete the ‘Blue Schedule Change Form’ which can be found on the magazine racks in cafe or print THIS!

Please email me at bgoldsteinb@gwcommunityschool.com or call or text me at 914-391-9080 to start a conversation about the most helpful approach for your family.

Go Coyotes!

GWCS THEATRE PRESENTS…

I HATE SHAKESPEARE!

By Steph DeFerie

We don’t really hate Shakespeare, but that is the name of the show. What's in a name that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet? Or should I say, “doff thy name!” Yes it is called ‘I Hate Shakespeare,’ but it is simply a tribute to the Bard for those of us who love Shakespeare! Let Hamlet be your narrator as you walk through an evening of skits, many featuring excellent performances by Coyote Thespians playing many of the Bard’s most famous characters, and many skits featuring Coyote Thespians spoofing Shakespeare and his plays until the clowns come home! The running time for the show is about one hour (plus a short intermission) and is guaranteed to make you feel more appreciative of Shakespeare, and a little worn-out from laughing. Or as King Leer’s fool has said, “if a man’s brains were in his heels, were ‘t not in danger of kibes!?”

Please join us in supporting our student actors who have put in hours and hours of practice, worked hard to memorize their lines and develop their characters. Now all they need is an audience - that’s where YOU come in!

A COYOTE CELEBRATION…

Friday, Dec. 17, 2021
1:00 PM - 3:15 pm

GWCS is kicking-off the end of the year with a Winter Party for students and staff! This event will mostly take place following lunch on December 17th but will actually begin when you get dressed in the morning as the attire for the day is ugly sweaters! The Holiday Party is a school activity and an important community-building part of the school day — not optional. Please help us embrace and ignite our holiday festivities by showing up in the ugliest/tackiest sweater you can find!

Entertainment, snacks, and games will include: a hot chocolate stand (delicious homemade hot chocolate provided by Alex Roach and family), a bonfire with smores, an escape room, crafting of graham cracker candy houses, an ugliest sweater contest, surprise live entertainment at 2pm, and MORE!

Attention Parents: Please participate by donating requested items listed in the SignUp Genius linked below. We also need help with cleanup (also on the signup). All contributions can be dropped off to Ms. Kohler in the lab A.S.A.P.!

HOW GWCS ADJUSTED TO COVID PROTOCOLS AND STAYED FOCUSED ON STUDENTS

aRTICLE IN iNTERACT MAGAZINE BY: wENDI sHUMARD, fORMER GWCS English, Math, and French Teacher from 2012-2018.

Wendi Shumard
(Photographer: Kyla Dunlavey)

Excerpt from “Educational Shakeups: That’s What We Do” by Wendi Shumard

One of the greatest compliments GWCS receives is the number of students and former staff who return ‘home’ to GWCS to visit, to work, and to express their gratitude for their time as a Coyote.

Click on the button below to read an article published in InterACT Magazine written by a former GWCS teacher, Wendi Shumard. Currently teaching in Bucharest, Romania - ShuShu (as she was lovingly called by her GWCS students) was reflecting on how difficult the last few years had been for educators and students and became curious about how GWCS “had weathered the storm”. Knowing full-well that GWCS is a close community with a student-centered curriculum, she wondered what changes were made to have remote and social-distanced learning during the ongoing pandemic, and how those changes affected the focus on “whole child education”. She reached out to Ms. Warden for an interview which resulted in the article linked below recently published in InterACT Magazine, with this issue focusing on stories of resilience. Ms. Shumard used GWCS as her example of a resilient, student focused education program.

About Ms. Shumard:

Ms. Shumard came to GWCS from an inner-city high school in Baltimore in 2012. She had previously taught at Leysin American School, a Swiss boarding school, where she returned every summer during her years with GWCS. In 2018, Ms. Shumard left GWCS to teach at BELS in Erzurum, Turkey, then to a small school on the island of Curacao, Dutch Antiles, and since 2019 has been teaching at Verita International School in Bucharest, Romania. Wow! What’s next for ShuShu? She and a few other educators are in the process of opening a student and philanthropy centered international school serving underserved/refugee populations.

PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL PORTRAITS…

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 10, 2021
BEGINNING AT 9:30 AM
all students & staff!

Michelle Bosch of BoschStudios Photography is an award-winning lifestyle photographer that has been serving Northern Virginia, Maryland, and DC for over 11 years. She was voted "Best Photographer" by Northern Virginia Magazine in 2017, has over 100 Five Star Ratings online and, fun fact, she's actually no stranger to the GW Community School. She's been photographing our graduations for the last 11 years! Because of COVID, we've shifted from our typical "picture day" and found a fun and creative way to take portraits while keeping safety as our top priority. These photos will be used for the GWCS Chronicle Yearbook.

Please be sure to check her out at www.boschstudios.com and follow her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/boschstudios.com and on Instagram at www.instagram.com/boschstudios.

OUI GOBLEU COOKING CLUB…

FINGER FOOD!

MONDAY, OCT. 25, 2021
12:05 PM - 12:50 PM

The Oui Gobleu (We Gobble You) Cooking Club meets one Monday a month during lunch to share recipes, food, and laughs. The Club picks a theme for each meeting and the members whip up a dish that matches.  All are welcome however, please don't come if you're allergic to smiles and happiness.

This month’s Oui Gobleu theme is … finger food!  In honor of Halloween, we’re not asking you to take the term “finger food” literally (Hannibal Lecter, much?), but bring in your best small, delectable (and maybe even spooky!) bites to share.  Perhaps pigs in a blanket, cheese puffs, or even a skewer or two?

Any cold/refrigerated food can be placed in the student fridge until lunch, otherwise place in Ms. Warden’s office.

LET’S TRAVEL…

SPRING 2023 GWCS SPAIN TRIP INFO MEETING

  • DATE: Wednesday, October 27, 2021

  • TIME: 7:00 pm

  • WHO: GWCS Students & Parents

  • LOCATION: Zoom

  • RSVP:  https://bit.ly/3oFpSnS

Email From: Torres, Alejandro <TorresRA@GWCommunitySchool.com>
Sent: Thursday, October 21, 2021 2:54 PM
Subject: GWCS International Trip Opportunity

Dear Parents & Students,

I am pleased to announce that a group of students and educators from GWCS will be participating in a global education initiative that will visit Spain in the spring of 2023! I will be hosting a virtual informational meeting via Zoom where we will cover all the tour details and our future trip to Belize.

After a year and a half of being disconnected for one another, it is critical for our students to become more culturally aware, explore new ideas and expand their horizons. Students who experience this opportunity will improve their social skills, connect their studies to the world outside of the classroom, and set themselves apart when applying to college and their future careers. Students can also earn credit on the tour by creating and completing their own online research projects.

I have chosen to travel with EF Tours because of their reputation as the world leader in international education, and because they have far and away the most experience in the industry as well as the broadest reach of any organization. They have been in business for almost 50 years and have local offices in more than 50 countries worldwide. EF guarantees the lowest prices for the highest quality and offers a flexible monthly payment plan to make the trip more easily affordable.

I am inviting all the GWCS students, and parents are welcome to travel as well, so there will be a very limited number of spots. Those interested in travelling with us are required to attend the information/enrollment meeting next Wednesday, October 27th at 7 pm and must RSVP to receive the Zoom meeting link and $200 discount. Please click the link for the meeting details and to RSVPhttps://bit.ly/3oFpSnS. If you absolutely cannot make it, but are interested in learning more, you will need to speak to me in person so that we can discuss the details of the trip.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Alejandro Torres

NOTE: There is still a spring 2022 trip to Belize. Talk with Senor Torres if you have questions.

ATTENTION GWCS JUNIORS & SENIORS*…

Gettysburg logo black.JPG

Every fall, the GWCS junior class heads north to Gettysburg. It is not truly analogous to Lee’s march on Gettysburg in 1863, but we mention it. Of course we ride on highways through rolling hills and arrive in good condition and good spirits in less than three hours, and Lee’s troops arrived after a forty day March, but still, the similarities are undeniable.” ~Richard Goldie 2016

This year we are offering the SAT through the SAT School Days program alongside the PSAT. This means that we will be administering the test on a weekday, expanding access to a globally recognized college admission test that's widely accepted at U.S. colleges. This is a great opportunity for those who haven’t yet taken it a first time, those who may want to retake it (and see if they get a higher score – they’ll submit your highest to colleges), or even Sophomores who feel comfortable with the PSAT and feel ready to try out the SAT.

The PSAT will be offered this year for any underclassmen (grades 9-11) who would like to take the PSAT.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO TRY SOMETHING NEW…

GWCS offers a generous selection of electives and clubs.  Most take place during 7th period (3:15 pm - 4:15 pm) -- but not all.  From September 20-24 students are invited to explore any and all electives and clubs (listed below) before committing.  We encourage all students to try at least one (or more).

An elective is a class which means attendance is taken and grades and credit are earned.  Clubs are more casual, and students do not earn grades or credit.  So, come out and kick around a soccer ball, experience history through HIM-NAP, build a robot, or maybe venture into acting, cooking, or hiking.

Elective/Club descriptions and the signup forms are linked below.

If a student is not participating in a 7th period elective or club on any given day, their pick-up time is 3:15 pm or they should go to the pick-up location designated on their emergency form.
