TRY SOMETHING NEW…

SIGN UP BY FRIDAY, SEPT. 24, 2021

GWCS offers a generous selection of electives and clubs.  Most take place during 7th period (3:15 pm - 4:15 pm) -- but not all.  From September 20-24 students are invited to explore any and all electives and clubs (listed below) before committing.  We encourage all students to try at least one (or more).

An elective is a class which means attendance is taken and grades and credit are earned.  Clubs are more casual, and students do not earn grades or credit.  So, come out and kick around a soccer ball, experience history through HIM-NAP, build a robot, or maybe venture into acting, cooking, or hiking.

Elective/Club descriptions and the signup forms are linked below. Signup forms are due on Friday, September 24th.

If a student is not participating in a 7th period elective or club on any given day, their pick-up time is 3:15 pm or they should go to the pick-up location designated on their emergency form.

cAT DAD, MATH SUPERSTAR, ADVOCATE FOR BEES

primary-pic.jpeg

When Alex Corrigan first came to GWCS in 2016, one of his favorite memories was taking Mr. Goldie’s Sociology class. “It was the first class of the day, so it was always an interesting way to start….” He also enjoyed Ms. Newton’s Anatomy and Physiology class, which may be the reason why he majored in Anatomy at George Mason University. While at GWCS, he was Alex, who speaks for the bees (ask him about his advocacy efforts his senior year), a cat dad to two rambunctious felines (as well as a snake of indiscriminate age), and Ms. Warden’s Pilates partner (although he willingly admits she “out-Pilated” him).

Now he graces us with his assistance in teaching our Tutorial class, and while we jest that he’s a math whiz, he says he has no clue where that rumor started, but would like it to be known that he is not mathematically inclined. So ask Mr. Corrigan all of your hardest math questions, or just stop by and say hi!

When Mr. Comstock joined GWCS his senior year, he thought he would be hard pressed to find a school that accommodated a student having a full-time job working in their family’s restaurant.  Little did he know that GWCS isn’t your average school, and enabled him not only to succeed academically, but also enjoy his senior year (if you look closely on our website’s home page, you will see a picture of him at the Senior Essay Writing Retreat).

He graduated from Johnson & Wales and was working in Boston as a tour guide, but if you ask him, he moved back to NOVA in 2020 for love, and it definitely had nothing to do with the Coronavirus Pandemic.  However, their loss is our gain, and we love that Mr. Comstock can impart his love of Medieval and Ancient Roman History with our students, as well as taking point for teaching our “Tutorial” guided study hall period.  He’s currently still working at Café Sfizi, his family’s Italian restaurant in Falls Church (hence his very austere stances on pizza toppings), and enrolled at George Mason for a dual master’s degree in Education and History.  We’ve been so impressed with Mr. Comstock’s involvement in the community, from becoming an intern to shifting now into his new role as co-teacher, and can’t wait to see what he does next!

A GLIMPSE OF THE FIRST WEEK…

STRAIGHT FROM THE COYOTES’ MOUTHS…

For Office Hours on Thursday 9/2, students and teachers were asked to send Ms. Warden an email telling her about something they liked or appreciated about this first week of school. Here’s what they had to say:

  • I enjoy group discussions and group dialogues. I think they're a great way to express ideas, and I think they also allow for a greater understanding of the class material.

  • I am thankful to see my teachers again.

  • This week I liked how we kept the bathroom policy, I also liked how I had a lot of new teachers rather than the same ones as last year!

  • Something I really like is how the Senior Lounge has become a lounge available for all grades. It’s nice to see acceptance that the rules were broken and that people of all grades like the area.

  • What I like most about this week were the classes. Now I usually wouldn't say that about a school. but here, all the classes are heavily discussion-based, which allows me to express more of what I know and not be as focused on writing things down, which I have difficulty doing.

  • I like that we still have the two breaks that we had last year.

  • I appreciate that all my students were patient, understanding, and helpful as we tried to figure out together how to use the various apps and websites I’ll be using this year.

  • I immensely APPRECIATED Kason bringing in vegan brownies. They were “the bomb dot com” as the kids say. Or used to say.

  • I really liked how friendly and welcoming everyone was, especially the teachers who helped me adjust to being in school again.

  • This first week of school, I really enjoyed how welcoming everyone was to the new students. I also love how every teacher was kind and helpful. I appreciated everyone for helping me understand how things work and being patient. I like how accommodating GWCS is, and how much safer it feels in comparison to public school. I really enjoyed the first week of school and I look forward to many more weeks at GWCS!

  • I enjoyed the fact that I finally got a cubby. I also enjoyed how you, Jay, Matthew, and Maddie left me in the hallway with a ladder and told me to put it away with no specification to where. P.S. the ladder is now located in the storage room two doors down from Mr.  Lindner’s room on the left.

  • I appreciate the tutorial class because it helps me get all my work done on time and a higher quality, also Mr. Corrigan and Mr. Comstock are very nice and cool and smart and funny.

  • I like that we still have the two breaks that we had last year. The breaks give me time to decompress and relax. Also, it is a down time for me.

  • Meeting new people.

  • One thing that I really appreciated about the first week of school was the orientation days, which introduced new students to the school and got everyone to know each other before jumping into the classes. Those days were really good for helping students feel comfortable at the school and they really made me feel relaxed for the first few days of school.

  • This first week of school was amazing! Science class was super fun - we got to calculate densities of different metals and analyze the properties of varies sodas (aka matter)!

  • The best school in the world: I love the school because it is very flexible. All the teachers are amazing. Alex C is by far the best student in this school. I love office hour because it gives me time to do homework. Mr.Comstock is amazing he helps me get all my work done. all the students here are nice. You're the best principle . THANK YOU

  • The teachers have been very helpful and everyone seems nice.

  • There were so many amazing parts of this week, I can't pick just one.  I think I liked the fact that Mr. Robbins lets us work on writing assignments in class and I am really enjoying Mr. Goldie's World Civ class this year.

  • Meeting new people and having fun with my amazing new friends and welcoming our new peers into our colorful community 😁

  • My first day back to school was great, it was nice to see everyone again. I talked to some new students and I found out that a few had the same hobbies etc.. I’m excited for this year for what it can bring.

  • I appreciated how easy the transition was back onto school, I had overthought how anxious I was going to be and how long it was going to take me to get adjusted, in actuality, it only took 15-20 minutes, I'm sure everyone was nervous though I had thought about every single thing that could have gone wrong the school made it easy to transition and painless and I'm just as comfortable as I was last year.

  • I feel like this school suits me well.

  • I really like that I have Brody at the school and that I have good classes that I like. I like office hours because I get to finish my homework with Mr. Comstock.

  • For me, I really liked meeting a ton of new people.

  • The best thing that happened to me this week was meeting everyone and feeling so welcomed.

  • I really liked the welcome atmosphere that we had at the school this week. It was great to see GWCS students and staff welcoming the new students and making sure that they were feeling comfortable in our community. It was great to see how everybody was supporting each other, when they were introducing themselves, clapping or giving words of encouragement.

  • My favorite thing this week was getting to see all the students from last year and getting to meet the new ones!

  • My favorite this week getting to know new students and seeing old ones! Also seeing  my colleagues after a long time ! I’m happy to be back at GWCS for the new school year !

  • What I liked about this week was how relaxed and nice the teachers and other students were. I also liked how there are different themed rooms, they are very pretty!

GET TO KNOW MS. N-O, THE NEW D.O.

June 2013 “I’m the new Sinichko — muhahahaha”

June 2013 “I’m the new Sinichko — muhahahaha”

Job foreshadowing

In this Instagram post from 2013 (eight years ago) Maria Nunez-Oliver (a.k.a. M or Ms. N-O) shared a picture of herself sitting at the front desk at GWCS with the caption “I’m the new Sinichko, muhahahaha.” Here we are in 2021 and she is the new Sinichko — the new GWCS Director of Operations!

AS A GWCS STUDENT

Ms. N-O graduated from GWCS with flying colors in 2014. She was a beloved and respected student by her teachers and her peers. Here are a few highlights to give you a little glimpse as to what kind of Coyote community member Ms. N-O was as a GWCS student:

  • SGA President & Event Coordinator

  • Boys Varsity Basketball Manager/Score Keeper

  • Coyote Robotics Team Member

  • Yearbook Editor

  • Avid History in Movies Participant

  • Student of the Year Award Recipient

  • Most Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award Recipient

  • Dually Enrolled at NOVA Community College

  • Interned with French Africa division of Voice of America

AS A GWCS ALUM

After graduating from GWCS, Ms. N-O was who we called when we needed a little extra help. From 2014 - 2021, Ms. N-O continued to support GWCS in a variety of ways including:

  • Proctored SATs

  • Chaperoned Event Nights

  • Chaperoned Overnight Trips

  • Helped with Basketball Books

  • Mr. Goldie’s Assistant on Misc. Projects

GETTING THE JOB

Last winter, when Mrs. Sinichko announced she was moving to Colorado, the very first person Ms. Warden thought would be perfect for the job was Ms. N-O! Below are a few direct quotes from Ms. Warden’s letter of recommendation for M back in 2014 when she was applying to college. These snippets will help you understand why she was the first person considered for the demanding job of Director of Operations for GWCS:

  • “Maria is positive patient, and present. She takes her responsibilities seriously and is a natural leader.”

  • “…she has that certain combination of intangibles that make her a great leader and a great student, but she is also eager to take on those thankless behind the scenes jobs that don’t get the glory.”

  • “She is calm yet spirited, open-minded and accepting yet her morals and values are solid, and a friend to everyone but able to maintain close and deep friendships with a few.”

GWCS FORMS

  1. EMERGENCY FORM: Please complete and return the 2021-2022 Emergency Form to the basket on the front desk by Tuesday, August 31, 2021. It is very important that we have this completed form without delay. New students who completed this form over the summer do not need to complete it again unless there are changes. We recommend downloading and completing this MS Word version of the Emergency Form so that you can save it to your computer and make and submit changes as needed during the school year.

  2. HEALTH FORM: All students are required to have on record a Virginia School Entrance Health Form (or similar immunization record). Physicals will only be required for students who indicate any flagged health issues on the FitLINXX form that will be completed during the first week of Personal Fitness and Basketball at Audrey Moore RECenter. (You can check student’s CoyoteWeb account to see whether or not we have their immunization on file.)

  3. MAT MEDICATION FORM: If it is necessary for a student to take medication prescribed by a physician during school hours or during a school-sponsored trip, please have your physician complete the MAT Physicians Medication Consent form (one for each prescription) and provide GWCS medications in the original prescription container. Medications will be administered during the school day by Mr. Mallonee.

  4. COVID-19 VACCINATION ONLINE FORM: GWCS families are asked to complete this vaccination info form by August, 31, 2021. This is your first homework assignment!

  5. PARENT-STUDENT HANDBOOK: It is important that parents and students take the time to read each and every page of the 2021-2022 Parent-Student Handbook. The last page is the GWCS Parent-Student Agreement Form. This needs to be printed, signed and returned to the basket on the front desk by Tuesday, August 31st.

  6. HOMEWORK COMMUNICATIONS: GWCS will be using Microsoft Teams Assignments for all homework-related communications. We are currently developing a method for parent notifications on assignments. Stay tuned.

  7. COMMUNITY SERVICE: All GWCS students are expected to complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service each school year. There are many opportunities to earn community service hours through school-sponsored community service activities. However, students may also complete their hours at any institution, facility, or program that is approved by Ms. Warden.

GWCS RESOURCES & INFORMATION

  1. GWCS PARENT PORTAL: On the GWCS website is a password protected Parent Portal which has a plethora of information and is your go-to-place when looking for school forms or information. Almost everything mentioned here can be found on the GWCS Parent Portal. And the password is... gwcscoyotes

  2. GWCS CALENDAR: GWCS has an online Google calendar linked on the website which is updated daily. Click on an event for more details and easily add events or holidays to your own personal calendar, if you’d like. The 2021-2022 School Year Calendar-at-a-Glance includes all of the school holidays and some of the year’s events. We recommend referring to the online Google calendar for the most up-to-date information.

  3. WYNK NEWSLETTER: Most Fridays during the school year, everyone in the current GWCS community receives an email with a link to the WYNK - the GWCS Newsletter. WYNK stands for "What You Need to Know". What you are reading here is the first newsletter of the 2021-2022 school year. Traditionally, the newsletter will provide families with a list of the following week's activities followed by accolades and announcements. The WYNK newsletter is published on the GWCS website (under the Resources tab) and shares the same password as the Parent Portal: gwcscoyotes.

  4. FAMILY ROSTER: This year we have changed over to a new system and the The GWCS Family Roster is available on CoyoteWeb. This roster includes all of the students’ and parents’ names as well as addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Although we like having student cell phones on file, we do not publish them in our Family Roster. Please feel free to use this roster to contact other GWCS families and arrange carpools. Inform GWCS of any changes or updates to your family contact information. (How-To: Parent Access to CoyoteWeb & Roster)

  5. STAFF CONTACT LIST: A list of all the GWCS teachers and staff with their contact information is available on Faculty/Staff section of our website as well. We encourage you to email your child’s Advisor and teachers with any questions, concerns or, the always welcomed words of appreciation!

  6. COYOTE HOWL: The Coyote Howl is our version of the school “bell schedule”. Please refer to this when scheduling appointments so that there is the least amount of class disruption as possible.

    • Coyote Howl includes 1st & 7th periods which are currently scheduled to begin on September 20th.

  7. COYOTE PAC (Parents Acting Collaboratively): GWCS depends on parent volunteers throughout the year. You will learn more about the volunteer opportunities at Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September 21, 2022. PAC Volunteer Form

  8. SCHOOL SPIRIT APPAREL by Rokkitwear! Order GWCS gear such as t-shirts, polos, button-downs, sweatshirts, jackets, hats, shorts, pants, warm-ups, backpacks, scarves, blankets... you name it - they've got it in every style and size imaginable. Find the style that suits you and get your coyote on!

  9. SCHOOL SUPPLIES: In addition to this supply list, students will receive a course syllabus from each of their teachers the first week of school. Included in each syllabus will be a list of supplies needed for their class.

    • BINDER: For the first week of school students should have a binder or pocket folder with notebook paper and writing utensils.

    • LAPTOP: Most of students’ classwork and assignments will be delivered and returned electronically through Teacher Dashboard. Therefore, the most important school supply to bring to school every day is a laptop (fully charged) and a power cord. It’s important to have a system in place so that the occasional assignments, documents, flyers and permission forms that do get printed don’t end up in a crinkled ball at the bottom of the backpack.

    • LUNCH BOX: School kitchens will be closed and, for now, students will not be allowed off campus. Therefore, students need an insulated lunch box with ice packs as well as a filled water bottle. We will be updating the community as we ease off of restrictions as possible, and open the kitchen back up, as well as letting students go off campus for lunch.

    • MASK & HAND SANITIZER: Although masks are required, we do not require a specific type of mask. We want students to find the style that is comfortable for long periods of time. The only restrictions are (1) no valve masks and (2) no gators. Of course we recommend the GWCS Coyote Masks!

GWCS TECHNOLOGY

  1. STUDENT LAPTOPS: All GWCS students are required to provide their own laptop or tablet and they are expected to bring their laptop and charger to school every day. Most laptops are compatible with Microsoft Office 365 but some tablets are not. Please confirm that your student laptop/tablet meets the requirements.

  2. LAPTOP PREP & CHECKLIST: GWCS students and parents/guardians should work together to get their student laptop up and running for the school year. Please make sure that you have turned your computer on since last year, and that all Microsoft programs are running up to date. This document should answer most questions and assist in the set-up process! Keep a list of any questions or problems and ask your Advisor for help as needed. The last page is a tech checklist to help track your progress. Orientation will include technology support for all students. To assist Advisors in knowing where students are regarding GWCS technology, please complete this online Technology Pre-Check.

  3. COYOTEWEB 2.0: CoyoteWeb is the GWCS academic portal which provides students and parents access to students’ schedules, weekly status reports, attendance, and more. Student login is their GWCS email address. Returning students' passwords were not changed from last year. New students should have received their password along with the Microsoft login info over the summer. Email Ms. N-O if student cannot remember their CoyoteWeb password. (Click Here for parent access instructions.)

  4. MICROSOFT OFFICE 365: GWCS provides students with a Microsoft Office 365 for Business account which includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Publisher, OneDrive Cloud Storage, Teams, Outlook Email, and much more. Students should download all Microsoft 365 software apps to their computer and bookmark the login pages. Student Technology Info
