Subject: GWCS: OBX Info and Permission Forms

Hello all,

We are excited about our first OBX the Friday we return from spring break!  Here are a few more details on the academics of OBX:

OBX (Outside the Box Education) is our experiential learning component. Students earn credit for participating. It’s our way of addressing all the skills that don’t fall neatly into a box in the traditional high school curriculum.  Traditionally, OBX events are every Friday during 4th quarter for freshmen and sophomores while juniors and seniors are at their Co-Ops.  This year we have opened up OBX to everyone and have a jam-packed schedule!  OBX is a class and therefore attendance is taken, grades are earned, and 0.25 elective credit will be given.  Students MUST attend ALL OBX events in order to earn the credit.  If a student misses one or more OBX events, they will not receive credit but will be expected to attend any remaining OBX events and “Experiential Learning” will be listed on their transcript without awarded credit.

Attached to this email is the full info sheet on all our OBX activities for this year, as well as a permission form that needs to be signed and returned no later than Wednesday, April 13th.  We have two activities that both require their own separate waivers, and we will be sending out separate emails with those linked closer to the date of the activity.

Also, since so many of our OBXs are going to be off-campus, we are looking for some parent drivers - check out the Sign Up Genius here!

Thank you in advance and we’re excited to have a great fourth quarter with you all!

MARCH MADNESS PARTY…

Thursday, April 14, 2022
2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

A March Madness celebration in April is almost as good as Christmas in July!   The PAC sponsored a March Madness basketball contest for the GWCS Faculty.   Alas, the Final Four happened during Spring Break, so we’re partying after break! All FAMILIES ARE INVITED to join faculty and students to mingle and to award our faculty winners on Thursday, April 14 from 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm at school.  This is a great time to chat with other families, since our opportunities to do so have been so limited the past couple of years.

PLEASE RSVP here:

GOT MILK? WE NEED EMPTY GALLON JUGS…

Please :)

Planning is well underway as we gear up for our 2022 OBX (Out of the Box) Fourth Quarter Fridays! In preparation, we are asking for empty gallon milk jug donations for one of our many Coyote Day activities which focuses on GWCS School Values and involves building totem poles.

Donated milk jugs can be put in either the little kitchen next to Mr. Lindner’s classroom or in Ms. Kohler’s science lab. We would greatly appreciate the jugs being rinsed out before donating.

New to GWCS? Not sure what OBX is all about? Click Here.

STAUNTON SHAKESPEARE TRIP UPDATES…

APRIL 29 - MAY 1, 2022

We were thrilled with the interest in this year’s Staunton Shakespeare Trip! All of the spots have been filled! For those fortunate enough to be going on this trip - please pay close attention to your email over the coming weeks as participating students will have a few trip meetings scheduled during office hours.

JOIN TODAY…

Yearbook is gearing up to create the 2021-2022 GWCS Chronicle! Would you like to create the Homecoming or Prom page in the yearbook? How about assembling pages for all of the upcoming OBX events? Or maybe you’d like to design the cover? Once you are enrolled in Yearbook, you will be given access to all of the GWCS photos taken this year and taught how to use the Lifetime yearbook program. Great fun. Great experience. Great way to earn credit (amount of credit depends on time you dedicate). Yearbook Elective will have short meetings at school during Office Hours but most of your yearbook page building can be done on your own time from the comfort of your home or wherever yu are most inspired and productive.

Interested in playing yearbook with us?

GWCS CLASS OF 2022

〰️

GWCS CLASS OF 2022 〰️

ATTENTION SENIORS…

For your final months of high school, it will be very important for you to watch the WYNK for things that you will need to do to prepare for graduation and beyond.

Senior Graduation Memory Boards

DUE: 5.25.2022

This is one of GWCS’ favorite traditions! Each senior family creates a Memory Board of photos and memorabilia to celebrate their senior. Click the button below for detailed instructions and examples. Memory Boards are due on May 25, 2022 and will be hung in the main GWCS hallway for the last few weeks of school and be available to view on graduation day. This may seem a long ways away but, it’s not! It will take an effort and some time for you to collect all the photos, lettering, and other supplies you will need to create your Memory Board. Start today and have fun with this walk down memory lane.

THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED…

Click the button below to read the GWCS News Blog Post about Ms. Warden’s 5th and 6th period English classes End of the World Party which, of course, includes photos.

FAIRFAX PARKS CLEANUP OPPORTUNITIES…

The events listed below will not be chaperoned by GWCS staff, but we thought i these might provide good opportunities for coyote families to find community service events close to home.

Email Received 3.12.2022 from The Nature Conservancy:

I’m Josh, a volunteer coordinator with The Nature Conservancy.  We are partnering with county parks to do a wonderful watershed cleanup around 15 different Fairfax county parks!  Registration for the annual Fairfax County Watershed Cleanup is now available at www.nature.org/fairfaxcleanup.  We need nearly 500 volunteers to help clean up plastic bottles, cans and other debris. It’s a great way to give back to the community, and it’ll be a pretty fun day as well!

Event capacity is limited, and we request that you register individually or in family units. Before registering a large group of 10+ people, please double check that everyone in your group is committed and will attend. This prevents us from situations where one group takes half the available spaces and then cancels last-minute, and we have no one to fill in.

Please follow this link at www.nature.org/fairfaxcleanup and sign up.

GREAT DINNER TIME CONVERSATIONS…

In each WYNK, we will provide links to the three most recent Screenagers Tech Talk Tuesday articles. We hope you will find them informative, with helpful suggestions, and interesting questions to discuss as a family. This blog is not an attack on teens and technology - it’s truly helpful and appreciated by students, parents, and teachers as it provides the framework for constructive and enlightening conversations.

FOOD SCRAPS NEEDED…

ESPECIALLY KALE!

this is TORTELLINI, OUR RUSSIAN TORTOISE

Tortellini, one of our beloved GWCS critters, lives in a cozy condo in Ms. Warden’s office and he loves to eat! If you would like to help keep his belly full, you can send in food scraps and garden snacks (especially KALE), but first please READ THIS to understand his diet and then drop off your gourmet scraps in Ms. Kohler’s lab. Questions? Email Ms. Kohler at kohlerja@gwcommunityschool.com.
