GWCS ONLINE EVENTS CALENDAR - UPDATED DAILY

Dear GWCS Community,

We are entering Week 3 of our GWCS Foundation Month of Giving. Currently we have received just over $6,700 toward our ambitious goal of $25,0000.

As you know, GWCS is an independent school and does not receive any government funding. Generous charitable gifts donated through the GWCS Foundation in this annual Month of Giving support the unique and extraordinary student activities outside of the traditional educational process. It’s important to note that this is the only fundraising event for the current school year, so your support is greatly appreciated.

The GW Community School Foundation is a philanthropic 501(c)(3) that now, with its updated mission, supports activities and programs that enhance and enrich the GWCS student experience. All donations are tax deductible and directly impact every student.

For this week, we’re focusing on our GWCS student community and their activities and clubs.

"Being able to do full-scale productions inspires my creativity. Higher quality productions help boost confidence and inspire people to join theatre, which bolsters our sense of community." – Dakota, GWCS Class of ‘24

"Sports management has allowed me to be part of the team without being on the court. I love this community." – Gray, GWCS Class of ‘24

I hope you and your student are creating lasting high school memories that are positive, affirming and uplifting. GWCS has given so much to all of us; now you have an opportunity to help by giving back through the GW Community School Foundation. Please share this email with family and friends who also support your student’s journey at GWCS.

Please contact me if you have any questions regarding the GWCS Foundation fundraiser. Thank you for your continued support of the GWCS student community!

Parents! Do you have contacts in any of the following business sectors? We are looking for internships placements for the following:

  • Speech & Language Pathology

  • Travel Agent

  • Forensics

  • Real Estate

  • Physical Therapy

  • Business/Corporate

  • Supply Chain

If you have a contact in any of the above sectors feel free to use our template email below and please be sure to attach our REAL Term Co-Op Flyer.

Hello,

I hope this email finds you well. My name is _______, and I am the parent of a student at GW Community School. I am writing to inquire about the possibility of hosting one of our high school students as an intern in your company weekly on Fridays this spring.

We run a program that offers our students the opportunity to explore different industries and gain real-world experience in areas of their interest. As part of this program, we are looking for local businesses who are willing to provide an internship opportunity to our students.

We believe that hosting an intern from our school would not only provide valuable experience for our student, but it would also benefit your company by allowing a fresh perspective and new ideas to be brought to the table.

The internship would begin on April 21, 2023, and end on June 9, 2023, and would take place on Fridays during the day (we would defer to your company for appropriate start and end times). During this time, the student will be able to observe and participate in the daily operations of your company, under the guidance of a supervisor or mentor.

If your company is interested in hosting an intern, please let us know by March 17, 2023. I've attached our flyer with more information about the program to this email and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for considering this request. We look forward to the opportunity to work with you and provide our students with valuable learning experiences.

Sincerely,

Co-Op Flyer to Attach

Dear GWCS Community,

Thank you so much to those who have already donated to the GW Community School Foundation! Every contribution is tax deductible, and directly supports activities, programs and events that enhance and enrich the GWCS student experience.

We continue our Month of Giving with a focus on Academic Enrichment. This year, donations to the GWCS Foundation are helping to support Phase 1 of the Micro-Farming Project. Led by Ms. Kohler, the GWCS Biology class is competing in the 2022-2023 Ecybermission. Their project focuses on designing and implementing the practice of Diverse Pesticide-Free Micro-Farming Agriculture through the use of a compost system. The class is currently testing their soil’s pH and nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, then comparing it to a variety of other soils. The overall intention of the project is to create nutrient dense soil which will eventually yield nutrient dense food.

“I feel we are on the cutting edge of a new compost system that eliminates toxic chemicals from the equation and supplements the soil with ingredients it needs to thrive!”

–Ms. Kohler, GWCS Science & Personal Finance Teacher

“I am excited to eat the food we grow from the compost soil we have been making because Farmers Market produce always tastes much better than standard supermarket produce.”
–Naomi, GWCS Student

Watch your email for next week’s spotlight on the vibrant GWCS student community, activities and clubs, and how your gift to the GW Community School Foundation can help support these meaningful, high-impact student experiences. Once again, here’s the link to make your tax-deductible donation: gwcsfoundation.org/donate.

Dear GWCS Community,

We’re reaching out to you as the grateful parents of two 2020 GW Community School graduates, and the current President and Fundraising Chair of the recently relaunched GW Community School Foundation.

We are kicking off our Month of Giving with an ambitious fundraising goal of $25,000, and a continued focus on supporting the unique and unmatched GWCS student experience. Throughout the month of March, we’ll share personal stories about how your donations impact and inspire our GWCS students.

All donations to the foundation are tax-deductible, and directly impact every GWCS student.

The GW Community School Foundation is a philanthropic 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2014 by a group of committed parents. The Foundation continues today with a focused goal of providing financial support for programs, activities and events that enhance and enrich the students’ community and educational experience at GWCS.

Here are a few examples of how and where the GWCS Foundation can make an impact:

  • Academic Enrichment (Micro-Farming Phase 1, Experiential Field Trips, Guest Speakers, etc.)

  • Trips and Activities (OBX: Out-of-the-Box Learning Experiences, Senior Essay Writing Retreat, Junior Gettysburg trip, Camp Coyote, etc.)

  • Athletics (Basketball, Volleyball, Sports Management, etc.)

  • Clubs (Theater, Music, Movies, Yearbook, etc.)

  • GWCS Traditions (Heritage Feast, Event Night, Coyote Day, etc.)

We welcome your support through the GW Community School Foundation.  To learn more and make your tax-deductible donation, go to gwcsfoundation.org.

With thanks for your support,

Suzanne Parisi

Dear Parents,

We are thrilled to re-launch our R.E.A.L. Term Co-Op Program, aimed at providing juniors and seniors with real-world experience in various fields and preparing them for their future careers.

To make this program a success, we are seeking support from the parents in our community. There are several ways in which you can get involved:

  1. Preparing Students: Assist us in preparing students for their internships by volunteering to lead workshops on resume writing, interview skills, and professional etiquette.

  2. Outreach: Help us spread the word about the program by sharing it with your network of friends and colleagues who may have connections in industries that are relevant to our students.

  3. Hosting Interns: If you or someone you know works in an industry that would be a great fit for our students, consider offering an internship opportunity. This would provide students with hands-on experience in a real-world setting.

Your support will greatly benefit our students and help make this program a huge success. If you are interested in getting involved, please CLICK HERE to respond with your area of interest and availability.

Thank you for considering this request. We look forward to working with you to provide our students with valuable learning experiences.

Warmly,

Alexa

Save the Date: Tuesday, November 22nd 10:00 am to 12:00 pm! It's the...Heritage Feast!

The Heritage Feast is a GWCS tradition that began in 2010 when a student asked Ms. Warden if the GWCS family could have a Thanksgiving dinner together at school.  Ms. Warden, who always says yes to a good pot-luck dinner, endorsed the idea and a tradition was born.

In the beginning, families contributed their favorite traditional thanksgiving dish.  A few years ago, to celebrate the diversity of our school community, we spiced it up by asking families to send in food that represented their heritage and changed the name to Heritage Feast.  Ms. Warden also created a catchy Heritage Feast jingle that is echoed around school the month of November.

From Ms. Warden:

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

Thank you to our Teacher Appreciation Committe who has been incredibly active this first quarter!

Our staff received gift cards to REI and and L.L. Bean after Camp Coyote, Amazon gift cards after Gettysburg, and a beautiful wallet and possibly the best smelling candle on the planet after the Senior Essay Writing Retreat. We are all blessed to get to spend time with your children and to be recognized afterward. We are small but mighty and have the best community ever.

Thanks also for the Spooktacular Teacher's Brunch this morning! You'll be sending us off satiated for a long weekend of end -of-quarter grading!

Warmly,

Alexa

Calling all Facility Folk! (Well actually, this could just be a half-day job for two future best friends...)

We are in need of a couple of parents to recover the chairs in the café. This is a relatively easy task that just requires use of a scissors, a Phillips head screwdriver, and a staple gun. Oh, and a trip to Joanne Fabrics. Email Ms. Warden if you are interested!

So, start thinking of your favorite family recipes and stay on the lookout for a Sign-Up Genius in next week's WYNK. Parents, siblings, family, and alumni are encouraged to attend!
