GWCS ONLINE EVENTS CALENDAR - UPDATED DAILY
Dear GWCS Community,
Thank you so much to those who have already donated to the GW Community School Foundation! Every contribution is tax deductible, and directly supports activities, programs and events that enhance and enrich the GWCS student experience.
We continue our Month of Giving with a focus on Academic Enrichment. This year, donations to the GWCS Foundation are helping to support Phase 1 of the Micro-Farming Project. Led by Ms. Kohler, the GWCS Biology class is competing in the 2022-2023 Ecybermission. Their project focuses on designing and implementing the practice of Diverse Pesticide-Free Micro-Farming Agriculture through the use of a compost system. The class is currently testing their soil’s pH and nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, then comparing it to a variety of other soils. The overall intention of the project is to create nutrient dense soil which will eventually yield nutrient dense food.
“I feel we are on the cutting edge of a new compost system that eliminates toxic chemicals from the equation and supplements the soil with ingredients it needs to thrive!”
–Ms. Kohler, GWCS Science & Personal Finance Teacher
“I am excited to eat the food we grow from the compost soil we have been making because Farmers Market produce always tastes much better than standard supermarket produce.”
–Naomi, GWCS Student
Watch your email for next week’s spotlight on the vibrant GWCS student community, activities and clubs, and how your gift to the GW Community School Foundation can help support these meaningful, high-impact student experiences. FRESH VEG NEEDED…
ESPECIALLY KALE!
This is Tortellini, our resident Russian Tortoise.
He is a ferocious plant eater. Kale leaves quake in his presence.
We have three turtle friends: Grouchy and Sweetie (red-eared sliders), and Tortellini (Russian tortoise). They are all on a natural raw diet which mainly consists of fresh, leafy greens! If you have any veggies from home or want to purchase and donate food items - it is much appreciated! Please bring donations directly to Ms. Kohler in the lab. The below list are their favorite staples. Thank you for helping keep our beloved school pets well nourished!
Kale
Mustard greens
Shredded carrots
Yellow squash
Zucchini
