Do You Really Know Your Family?

As the holiday season is fast approaching, I’ve been thinking about games we can play with family and friends visiting. Check out this fun family game called “Do You Really Know Your Family?” I’m diggin’ games that create connection, conversation, and most importantly — laughter. Fast moving and easy to learn which is great when you have family visiting and you don’t want to spend an hour learning how to play a new game with your immediate family or maybe with cousins, aunts, uncles, or grandparents.

Ages 8 - 108
3 - 8 players

Does anyone else have any favorite boardgames or card games? Send me an email!

Every week in the WYNK a staff or faculty member shares something they are ‘diggin’! It may be a music artist, a museum, a hobby, a book, a tech tool, a current event, a recipe, a game, a fun fact… you name it - we dig it!

Weekly Song Recommendations…

with Amelia

Hello, this is Amelia Schmutz! I am a junior at GWCS, and I write a section of the WYNK on song recommendations. I hope you enjoy. Feel free to talk to me at school or email me your top recommendations and favorite songs for a future WYNK.

MY
RECOMMENDATION

“WINTER (THE FOUR SEASONS) FIRST MOVEMENT” – ANTONIO VIVALDI

I greatly dislike the cold weather that is approaching us, but I love everything about Vivaldi’s “Winter.” In my opinion, Vivaldi is the first classical artist to be “metal.” Even though “Winter” was not originally played on the piano, I have been practicing it on the piano a lot. I know playing it on the piano would be better than I could ever imagine playing it on the violin.

The piece begins with short, sharp trills. At first it sounds easy to play. Then comes the massive beat drop. Jaw dropped! The violin goes off depicting the harshness of winter wind. This gives you an intensity that can even be described as anxiety. I even use that feeling in a fair amount of music I write. As the piece continues, you hear the most famous main part of “Winter.”

Today, “Winter” can still be heard in the mainstream, like in the movie “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”.

GWCS RECOMMENDATION

“HEROS” – DAVID BOWIE

Recommendation by Mr. Howarth

The title track of Bowie’s album “Heros” is one of Mr. Howarth’s favorite songs! Anything related to David Bowie is a work of art. He was an advocate for gender fluidity, LGBTQIA+ rights, and diversity.

One afternoon in July 1977, Davis Bowie saw “… a couple of lovers by the (Berin) Wall that prompted the idea for Heroes,” Bowie told Classic Rock in 2015. The couple turned out to be Bowie’s producer Tony Visconti and his girlfriend, even though Tony was married at the time. “It was very touching because I could see that Tony was very much in love with this girl, and it was that relationship which sort of motivated the song.” Through the lyrics, “Yes, we're lovers, and that is that. /Though nothing will keep us together. /We could steal time just for one day. /We can be heroes for ever and ever.” The song is upbeat, but the atmosphere is dense due to the visual of the Berlin Wall. This atmosphere appears in the “Heros” record. Bowie’s art-pop theme glows making it perfect to daydream to.

NEW RECOMMENDATION

“A Fragile Thing” — The Cure

After 16 years, The Cure released their 14th studio album “Songs Of A Lost World” on November 1, 2024. It feels like The Cure has picked up right where they left off, this time with a heavier rock theme but still staying true to their roots. “A Fragile Thing” will have you swaying your head to the beat. The freshness of the song is remarkable. The lyric, “This love is my everything, but nothing you can do to change the end,” reminds you of The Cure’s classic themes from the past.

Piano notes flow through the song along with Robert Smith’s emotional vocals. Toward the middle of the song, the guitar comes through in a beautiful, revibrated solo. It scratches that itch we have been waiting for all this time.

“Songs Of A Lost World” has been one of the most anticipated albums of the years and does not disappoint in the slightest. From start to finish, the record is a work of perfection.

It’s The… Heritage Feast!

Tuesday, November 26, 2024
9:00 am - food dropoff
10:00 am - 11:30 am - Feast
11:50 am - Early Dismissal

We are thrilled to announce the 15th annual Heritage Feast! This beloved GWCS tradition began in 200, when a student approached Ms. Warden with a wonderful idea: to host a Thanksgiving dinner together at school. Ms. Warden, a true champion of community and potluck gatherings, wholeheartedly embraced the idea, and a tradition was born.

Originally, families contributed their favorite Thanksgiving dishes. But in 2010, to celebrate the diversity within our GWCS community, the event transformed! We began encouraging families to bring dishes that represent their unique cultural heritage, and our “Thanksgiving” potluck became the *Heritage Feast*. Ms. Warden even created a catchy Heritage Feast jingle, which echoes through the halls every November!

We invite all GWCS families to join us on **Tuesday, November 26th** for this year’s feast. Feel free to bring extended family, along with a dish that celebrates your heritage! Let’s make this 15th Heritage Feast one to remember.
