#1 - Sophia is Diggin’…

Custom Nail Design - by Aung

Last week, Aung (GWCS freshman) designed my nails on a piece of paper. I took his design to my nail salon, and they recreated it perfectly! I love having people create custom designs for my nails; it makes them feel more personal and meaningful, rather than just picking a random design off the internet.

Jupiter!

All November and into December , Jupiter will shine brightly near the evening sky. The giant planet will be one of the brightest things in the night sky (You might think it's an airplane!) and it will rise around sunset by month’s end and be visible through dawn. The location of Jupiter in its orbit around the sun is such that it will be at its full brightness, so don't miss out.

If you need help finding it, try the free cellphone app called Skyview! It turns your phone into an interactive star map!  And, if you have binoculars, you might even see Jupiter's Moon (discovered by Galileo about 400 years ago!). Here's a photo I took on Saturday night!

Every week in the WYNK a staff or faculty member shares something they are ‘diggin’! It may be a music artist, a museum, a hobby, a book, a tech tool, a current event, a recipe, a game, a fun fact… you name it - we dig it!

FTC Qualifier Tournament in Charlottesville, VA…

Congratulations to FTC Robotics Team 965 “The League of Incompetent Gentlemen”, for a great performance at last Saturday’s FTC Qualifier Tournament in Charlottesville, VA.  With three out of four in their first event, Hartly, James, and Ryan learned a lot, had a lot of fun, dealt with challenges and repairs, improved in every match and are excited to go from here.  Our next competition will be Saturday, December 14th in Glen Allen, VA.  Go Gentlemen!

Spirit Week at GWCS - So Fun!

Thanks to everyone for participating - so much school spirit!

A Night to Remember…

This year’s Homecoming Dance and Party at GW Community School was nothing short of amazing! The evening dazzled with a glamorous red carpet setup, making everyone feel like a star. Students loved signing their names on the Hollywood-style stars placed along the ground—a personal and memorable touch that was a huge hit.

The night was filled with plenty of delicious food, a fantastic selection of music, and for some, non-stop dancing that kept the energy alive! It was truly a night where memories were made, friendships were celebrated, and the GWCS spirit shone bright.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this Homecoming one for the books! 🌟

Weekly Song Recommendations…

with Amelia

Hello, this is Amelia Schmutz! I am a junior at GWCS, and I write a section of the WYNK on song recommendations. I hope you enjoy. Feel free to talk to me at school or email me your top recommendations and favorite songs for a future WYNK.

MY
RECOMMENDATION

Mojo Pin” – Jeff Buckley

One day last summer I listened to Jeff Buckley’s album Grace. It changed my life. The album has zero skips. “Mojo Pin” is the first song on Grace. Most of the song has soft, slow guitar riffs. He sings, “Don’t want to weep for you. /I don’t want to know.” Later he belts out the same lyrics, but the song is no longer soft and slow. His guitar wails out expressing his pain and desire. Jeff Buckley stated that the song was about a dream of an African American woman. “Black beauty, I love you so.” Through a wash of bizarre images, the lyrics are about a feeling of addiction, either to drugs or a person. “Sometimes if somebody you feel you need… the whole universe tells you that you have to have her, you start watching her favorite TV shows all night, you start buying her the things she needs, you start drinking her drinks, you start smoking her bad cigarettes, you start picking up her nuances in her voice, you sleep in safe sometimes the most dangerous thing… this is called Mojo Pin.” Jeff Buckley said in Astoria, London, on January 18, 1995.

GWCS RECOMMENDATION

Pink + White” – Frank Ocean

Recommended by:
Myat Tun
(student)

Starting with orchestral trills, "Pink + White" transition into classic R&B with humongous vocal harmonies kicking in the outro. It just melts you. "Pink + White" was produced by Pharrell Williams and includes uncredited backup vocals by Beyoncé and a single uncredited word from Kanye West. The song describes Frank Ocean's recollections of his early memories of a deceased loved one. He recalls the things they taught him, which has helped him remember this individual.
In this song, the idea of mortality is central. He sings of a hurricane destroying everything in its path and aftermath in the second verse. The hurricane is perhaps an allusion to Hurricane Katrina, which forced Ocean to move to Houston while he was a student at the University of New Orleans. This person might have perished in Katrina. Lyrics, “It’s all downhill from here.” feels like a statement on his perfectionist personality.

NEW RECOMMENDATION

Crispy Skin” – Squid

Squid will be releasing their third studio album “Cowards” on February 7, 2025.  They released the first track “Crispy Skin” on November 12, 2024. The song comes from the novel “Tender Is the Flesh” by Agustina Bazterrica. “I read where cannibalism becomes the societal norm and humans are manufactured and sold in supermarkets,” lead vocalist drummer Ollie Judge explains. Despite the song’s gruesome meaning, “Crispy Skin” is very upbeat with a vibe like The Strokes. If you like The Strokes, definitely check out Squid’s music.
