What You Need to Know:
All GWCS 8th, 9th graders have been signed up to take the PSAT 8/9 Exam

All 11th and 12th graders have the option to take the SAT Exam

Weekly Song Recommendations…
with Amelia
Hello, this is Amelia Schmutz! I am a junior at GWCS, and I write this section of the WYNK on song recommendations. I hope you enjoy. Feel free to talk to me at school or email me your top recommendations and favorite songs for a future WYNK.
MY
RECOMMENDATION
“Sabotage” (Explicit) – Beastie Boys
I can’t believe it has taken me this long to do the Beastie Boys! Their music has always been a huge part of my life. Whether I was bopping my head along to the songs as an infant or using as “Sabotage” my walk-up song in softball. I can never be in a bad mood while listening to the Beastie Boys.
The Beastie Boys destroyed all stereotypes about rappers. Here they were white, Jewish boys from New York becoming some of the most popular rappers at the time. “Sabotage” one of their most popular, and personally one of my favorite, songs. The energetic mix with hyped up vocals makes “Sabotage” stand out. The Beastie Boys “…decided it would be funny to write a song about how Mario, [their producer], was holding us all down, how he was trying to mess it all up, sabotaging our great works of art,” Ad-Rock said.
I would also like to add that the “Sabotage” music video is, in my opinion, the best music video ever created. The Beastie Boys are dressed up in 70’s cop outfits with fake wigs and fake mustaches in a home-movie like video. I HIGHLY recommend that you watch it!
GWCS RECOMMENDATION
“Subterranean Homesick Blues” – Bob Dylan
Recommended by:
Mr. Howarth
Bob Dylan has been making a huge re-appearance ever since the movie “A Complete Unknown,” featuring Timothée Chalamet, came out.
Bob Dylan spent three days in New York in January 1965 recording songs for his fifth album “Bringing It All Back Home.” Dylan ruled the folk world at that moment, but at 23 years old felt increasingly frustrated and limned in by this niche. “Subterranean Homesick Blues” was knocked out in a single take. The song follows a bad state of the world where a kid is getting wrapped into substances. The lyrics are truly heartbreaking. “Look out, kid, it's somethin' you did. /God knows when, but you're doin' it again.”
In the music video Bob Dylan holds up postcards of the lyrics to the song. It’s a classic that has been often imitated.

NEW RECOMMENDATION
“Thorn” – Lana Death Ray
Not to be confused with America’s sweetheart Lana Del Ray. Rather, an underground indie band from Brighton, England. “Thorn” is the band’s first ever song released on January 29, 2025. The song starts off very shoegaze-y then transitions into a guitar heavy chorus. They have taken inspiration from bands like Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Deftones which you can hear heavily in their music. Definitely keep Lana Death Ray on your radar if you like any of the bands listed as their inspiration!
