DYLAN O’BRIEN - ENGLISH

Amidst the clop of horse hooves and bells of the streetcars, men in undyed cotton shirts, matching suspenders, and dusty work boots sat outside John O’Brien’s pub in NW DC for fried eggs, sausage, and a morning dram before heading to the docks and railyard. My great-great grandfather, with a respectable chevron moustache and thinning hairline, greeted the men every morning, opening the door of his family’s livelihood—a path from Ireland to America and a place to grow deep roots—and sharing stories with them inside.

This is the beginning of my family’s story in and around the Washington DC Metropolitan area: my great-grandparents, my grandparents, and my parents were all born here, making me the fifth generation—and my children the sixth!

I’ve been an educator now for almost twenty years: working in learning centers, teaching in classrooms of public and private schools, running my own education company for students with learning obstacles and challenges. I received a Bachelor’s from the University of Maryland, College Park in Literature and Secondary English Education and a Master’s from George Mason University in Professional Writing and Rhetoric. I have worked with students of diverse backgrounds, needs, and ages—although adolescence is my specialty. I also specialize in helping students grow the academic roots needed to succeed in reading and writing, watching students bloom into successful readers and semanic analyzers in only a matter of months!

I am a mom to two spunky little boys, ages eight and five, and a lover of the great outdoors. Both are often combined into family camping trips and outdoor adventures of hiking, rock scrambling, and wild swimming. We are accepting donations for our RV fund!

I am honored to be a part of the GW Community School as your student’s teacher of English, a supporter of learning, and a guide to actualizing potential.
