The students of the week are the SUPER SMASH BROS. CREW for demonstrating the GWCS value of TEAM PLAY.

Super Smash Bros. is one of GWCSs venerable traditions, reaching all the way back to 2004 and the original Nintendo 64 version of the game, but for some reason, until recently nobody was playing it this year. Over the past few weeks, every day during lunch, there has been a rowdy but respectful group of video gamers forging friendships in the fires of friendly competition. They are always willing to give up an available controller to anyone who asks and graciously welcome newcomers. When it's time to return to class, they fold up the stadium seating, put the controllers away, turn the game off, and fall right back into their lives as students.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS VALUES: LEARNING, SERVICE, KINDNESS, EXCELLENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, INVESTMENT, TEAM PLAY, INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY

BELATED THANKS...

Dear Parents:

It’s been a whirlwind of a new year and too much time has passed since we’ve thanked you! As you know, GW Community School was founded on the unique perspectives of parents, students and teachers striving toward a unity of purpose. It’s so refreshing to see that eighteen years later the spirit is so alive. We had a great turnout for our last PAC Parent meeting! And our PAC committee chairs were so happy to have parents volunteer for graduation committees and donate auction items. The theme of the night seemed to be “It takes a village” and our small village is on its way to achieving some really big goals. At GWCS, graduation is a year-end celebration of how far we have all come and a beautiful and touching send off for our graduating seniors. Again, all are encouraged to attend (and help). You definitely won’t regret it.

Mid-Term Brain Breakfast

Mid-Term Brain Breakfast

Midterm exams are typically a stressful time for high schoolers. But not at GWCS! Thanks so much to our PAC for funding three delicious and nutritious days of breakfasts and snacks that were well-enjoyed by students and staff alike. Thanks also to our wonderful parent volunteers who shopped for and laid out our beautiful spread. Teachers were treated the first day of midterms to their favorite hot or iced drink from Peet’s! So a big Thank You to the Faculty Appreciation committee for that special treat. Happy teachers; happy school! And those words couldn’t have been truer last week.

And a huge thank you to the Facilities Committee who come in like little elves and leave no footprints, but total transformation. Check out our new paint job, Dr. G’s much needed new whiteboard, and Ms. Newton’s new class set up!

Coffee Talk at Peet's, Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017

Coffee Talk at Peet's, Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017

At GWCS connections are made that last a lifetime. Take advantage of it! Feeling out of the loop? Longing to spend some quality time with some quality people? Have a passion that may not be totally realized in your daily 9-5? Reach out and connect with your PAC! There is truly something for everyone, and we will all benefit from your contributions.

Thank you again for all that you do to make our school the haven that it is.

Best,

Alexa

LOOKING AT NEXT WEEK: February 6 - 11, 2017

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The Student of the Week this week is CATE HARTNETT for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT.

With only a couple of weeks under her belt as an enrolled student at GWCS, Cate took it upon herself to organize ‘senior night’ for the players on the boys and girls varsity basketball teams.  Seniors and their parents were honored (with flowers and cakes and other gifts in-the-making) in front of the last home audience of the season.  It was clear (from the debris and the icing-blue smiles) that another GWCS tradition was born.  See you at Senior Night 2018!  Thanks Cate!

Thank you to all the PAC Volunteers who organized and contributed to the midterm breakfast buffet!  All three mornings, the breakfast table was full of bagels, muffins, hard boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt, granola bars, nuts, milk and juice.  After an energizing workout at the gym, students arrived at school and swarmed the breakfast table as though they hadn't eaten all week.  By 9:30 am they were settled into their first midterm of the day - brains and bodies stimulated, alert and satisfied.

JANUARY PAC MEETING...

We had an excellent turn out for the January PAC Meeting.  Forty-six parents turned out to learn and share about some of GWCS's more innovative and intimate programs and traditions.  Special thanks to Linda Campbell, our PAC Volunteer Coordinator, for organizing this special event.

Co-Ops

Every Friday during 4th Quarter
April 21 - June 9, 2017
All GWCS Juniors & Seniors

Parents learned the history behind, and pedagogy of, our R.E.A.L. Term Spring Co-Op.  Kristen Stombres, our Co-Op coordinator, highlighted the flexibility of the program and the individualized experiences our students can have, explained the process and timeline of the program and fielded questions.  Several returning parents shared their child's experience from last year, including Kebby Kelley, who raved about her son, Joe's, work at the Children's Science Center.  Julie Corrigan remarked that her son, Alex, loved working with Mrs. Stombres and was really excited about his prospects this year.

We wrapped up this portion of the evening with a plea for contacts who might sponsor Co-Ops this year in the fields of Cyber Security, Nursing and Journalism.

Please reach out to Kristen with any questions you may have about the REAL Term Spring Co-Op or any potential leads in the areas listed above at stombreskl@gwcommunityschool.com

OBX

Every Friday during 4th Quarter
April 21 - June 9, 2017
All GWCS Freshmen & Sophomores

We then turned the conversation to our OBX (Outside the Box) events for freshmen and sophomores.  After hearing about several teachers' favorite trips and how experiential learning translates back to the classroom, we segued into the importance of the online auction, which funds the OBX experience.

AUCTION

February 21 - March 3, 2017

Deiadre Rauch, our PAC Fundraising Chair, stressed the need for 100% participation in the auction to not only fund the OBX experience, but teacher development, technology, trips and traditions.  To contact Deiadre with questions about or contributions to the auction, email her at PAC-Fundraising@gwcommunityschool.com

GRADUATION

Saturday, July 17, 2017
George Washington Masonic National Memorial
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Graduation was the next item on the agenda and several parents spoke about how moving and special it is.  Parents also shared about the fun they had volunteering before, and the day of, and the wonderful friends they made in the process.  Cheryl Massey, our PAC Graduation Chair, received rave reviews from last year's volunteers for her organization, communication skills and grace.  All GWCS underclassmen parents and students are highly encouraged to volunteer and attend graduation.  To reach out to Cheryl, email her at PAC-Graduation@gwcommunityschool.com

Overall, it was a fun and festive evening!  The reoccuring theme of the night was "It Takes a Village."

Perhaps that's why we made "Community" our middle name.

Alexa Warden,
GWCS Director

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The Student of the Week is NICK O'NEAL for demonstrating the GWCS value of KINDNESS

When was the last time you saw Nick O’Neal when he wasn’t looking out for the best interest of everybody in the room?  Never.  Nick is omnipresent when it comes to the concerns of others.  He can be seen giving-up his turn, his chair, his Pringles and anything else available to make someone else’s daily experience better.  I have even seen him offer some of his grade points to classmates who did not do well on an assignment.  Nick will give you empathy instead of apathy every time!

COLLEGE & GAP YEAR FAIRS...

GWCS students are encouraged to CLICK HERE to view the GWCS Senior webpage where we have listed College Fairs and Gap Year Fairs taking place in the NOVA area.

These fairs provide students with a broad exposure to hundreds of Colleges and Gap Year Programs in the United States and Abroad.  Students have the opportunity for face-to-face conversations with college admissions personnel and professional in the field.  It's recommended that students take advantage of these opportunities to learn about the wide range of options and then make plans to go visit campuses and explore long before it's time to start applying!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The Students of the Week are Ms. Newton's 3rd Period Honors Anatomy and Physiology Class for demonstrating the GWCS value of LEARNING.

Ms. Newton writes: In preparation for the pig dissection, we did a “mock” dissection of snack cakes today. The students had to treat it seriously, use anatomical terms, draw and label, and had points taken off for sloppiness. Look how much they got into it! This lab and how the students reacted is what makes me love this job so much. You know you are doing something right when they are voluntarily doing work and enjoying it!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

My Three Angels

PERFORMANCES:

  • Wed., Dec. 14th from 7pm - 9pm
  • Thu., Dec. 15th from 7pm - 9pm

"The scene is French Guiana, a region where on Christmas day the temperature has graciously dropped to 104 degrees. Three convicts are employed as roofers by a family, whose roof is in desperate need of maintenance. On the way from France is an evil-minded cousin, to oust the father of the family from his business, and his cold-blooded nephew, who is jilting the father's daughter for an heiress. The three convicts—two of them murderers, the third a swindler—take the visitors on. All three have warm hearts and are passionate believers in true justice. Possessing every criminal art and penal grace, they set matters right and in doing so redeem themselves as real life angels to the grateful family."

TICKETS:

Order your assigned-seat tickets today.  Very Limited availability!

$15.00 in advance / $20 at the door - if there are any seats left!

HELP STOCK
THE HOLIDAY SHOP...

Last chance to donate is 9:00 am Tuesday, December 13th!

“Last year a couple of the seniors helped me bring one of many loads of gently used items to the Accotink Holiday Store. We encountered a young student working there who thanked us profusely. He went on to point out all of the things he planned on “buying” for residents of the homeless shelter where he was living. His only concern was being able to give a gift to each person. We all left feeling a little more humble, a little more grateful, and a little regretful that we hadn’t done more. Please find the time to allow a child to give a gift this holiday season.”

-Ms. Warden

GWCS is collecting donations of NEW or GENTLY USED items for the Accotink Holiday Shop now through December 13th.  Accotink Academy is a private therapeutic day school for students with a variety of learning and emotional disabilities.  Students use points earned for good behavior to "purchase" gifts for family members at the Holiday Store.   Items should be labeled "Holiday Shop" and can be dropped off in front of Ms. Mauney's desk.

MUST READ QUICK LINKS:

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The Student of the Week this week is GABRIELLA HOLTERMANN for demonstrating the GWCS values of SERVICE!

Gabby has taken every opportunity to help out her community during the past week and shows no sign of slowing down. She has attended every basketball game and has taken the lead in every possible situation. When the team needed someone to run the clock, Gabby stepped up. When the team needed someone to learn the book and travel to Georgetown to manage a game, Gabby stepped up.

Gabby is always the first kid to help out. She loads the van before every game and makes sure nothing is left behind. She navigated our way down to Lab School and never leaves the gym until everything is cleaned up and put back in the right spot.  As a player Gabby is focused, supportive and always at the top of her game. She has logged many hours of extracurricular activity over the last two weeks and has done it with a thank you and a smile.

GWCS THEATRE PRESENTS...

my three angels image1.JPG

My Three Angels

Performances:

  • Wednesday, December 14th from 7pm - 9pm
  • Thursday, December 15th from 7pm - 9pm

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA...

Mr. Fedinatz & Anna ~ December 2015

COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT

Saturday, December 17,2016

8:30 am - approximately 11:30 am

It is that time of year again to lay wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. As the Wreaths Across America website states, this is a chance to remember our fallen veterans and honor those who have served our country. Participating students will earn community service hours for each hour  at Arlington Cemetery as well as an additional hour for each family member.

Details:

  • Park in the south Pentagon lot. (map)
  • Meet at the service entrance off Columbia Pike at 8:30 am.
  • If you would like to attend the opening remarks you may want to take the metro or park near the main gate of Arlington National Cemetery.
  • Wreath laying commences at 10:00 am.
  • You can stay as long as you like and make this experience your own.
  • If by chance we do not cross paths just keep track of your hours and email me or I will go around and collect community service hours on Tuesday 3 January when we get back from Winter Break.

I personally encourage every member of our community to show up for this event and remember the sacrifices which our military community makes every day. Feel free to contact me, Shawn Fedinatz at fedinatzgs@gwcommunityschool.com with any questions.

HELP STOCK
THE HOLIDAY SHOP...

-Ms. Warden

STUDENTS OF THE WEEK...

The Students of the Week this week are The Girls Basketball Team for demonstrating the GWCS values of Investment, Responsibility, Team Play, Excellence, and Kindness!

The girls went on the road this weekend as a pack of individuals and came home as a team! The passing, pressing, and defense were honed to perfection. All of the girls who played (Katie, Lizzie, Laura, Delia, Kelley, Gabriella, Rachael, Annie, Evelyn, Catherine, and Elizabeth) stayed focused and energized for both games and played like champions throughout. They showed-up, played the right way, and helped-up opponents who (somehow) ended-up on the floor after intense plays! If you want to see any of the GWCS values in action, come to a girls basketball game. It’s FANtastic!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

#2 PAC - HOTLINE BLING:
GWCS 4th ANNUAL ONLINE AUCTION

This year's online auction will run from February 21st through March 2nd, and we are soliciting donations now! Funds raised will support three specific areas: Technology, Student Activities and Professional Development.  All money raised from the auction will be spent in 2017, so you will see immediate benefits from your donations and purchases.

Best-selling auction items are "experiences" donated from within our community: vacation houses, cultural dinners, parties for students or parents, cooking lessons, beer tastings, wine parties, Ladies Night Out parties, etc.  We also accept donations from local businesses. If you have a contact at a local business, please consider asking them for a donation.

Check out our 2016 auction to see some of the items donated last year. In 2015-2016 we raised over $18,000.  This year our goal is $19,000.

Already know what you want to donate?  Fill out the AUCTION DONATION FORM and drop it off with Ms. Mauney at school (label donation "GWCS Auction") or email your form to Deiadre Rauch at PAC-Fundraising@gwcommunityschool.com.

You can also email Deidre with any questions, or call her at 571-422-8935.  Thank you!

#1 PAC - FACILITIES (SCHOOL MAINTENANCE)

Donation needed:

Refrigerator for science lab.  If you have an unused, working refrigerator, please send an email to PAC-Facilities@GWCommunitySchool.com It would be put to good use and we can help with pickup.

Facilities - Honey Do List:

Do you have handyman skills and a few hours to donate at your convenience?  Do you like to ‘shop’ for free things online or bargains without using your own money?  Do you have a truck and ability to remove items that don’t fit well in in the dumpster (or pick-up/deliver a refrigerator with the help of other volunteers)?  Do you have a woodshop and ability to make frames for the teacher’s whiteboards?  If so, you have a great opportunity to contribute to school improvements! Please add your name to the SignUp Genius List to be contacted as these types of jobs come up.

Facilities – Painting Pizza Day:

The paint list this year is pretty small.  Probably just one weekend.  It’s quick work with a lot of hands, and a good time to catch up with other parents as you tape, paint or clean brushes – something for everyone AND coffee and pizza breaks JIf you’re interested, please send an email to PAC-Facilities@GWCommunitySchool.com with your availability and preference for the weekends of Nov 5th, 12th and/or 19th.

LOOKING AT NEXT WEEK: Oct. 29 - Nov. 6, 2016

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is BRIAN CONNER for demonstrating the GWCS value of  INVESTMENT!

Brian makes his mark on the GWCS community by getting involved and going the distance every chance that he gets!  Brian is one of the masterminds of the all the amazing SGA events.  He camps, he talks (and dresses like a pirate), he eats lettuce at lightning speed, and now he is the driving force behind the theatre clubs production of My Three Angels.  If you want your activity to be a complete success, the first step is to recruit Brian!

THANK YOU VERY BRUNCH!

The GWCS staff was treated to a delicious brunch on Tuesday, October 25th.  Thank you to all the parents who volunteered and contributed!  We enjoyed every bite and truly appreciated all of your efforts!   Special thanks to our newest PAC Exec, Mary Hill!

GWCS FOUNDATION...

THE ANNUAL FUND FOR THE GW COMMUNITY SCHOOL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS NOW OPEN!

PLEASE GIVE!

The Annual Fund at GWCS has been active for over three years, with all money raised going to fund scholarships for current or prospective GWCS students.  The GW Community Foundation was established in 2014 by a group of parents who saw a need to support scholarships at the school.  Many of the parents had transformational experiences with their own children at the school and wanted to make sure that this opportunity was available to other students.  The Foundation has given out three scholarships since it's initial start, and plans on giving out many more!

Donations can be made via online at the foundation website:  www.gwcommunityfoundation.com.  Click on the "Support Us".  You can also make a donation by check made out to GW Community School Foundation.
If you have any questions about the Annual Fund, please contact:

Deiadre Rauch
GWCS Fundraising Chair
deiadrerauch@me.com

Please consider making a donation of any size to our annual fund!  We are aiming, as always, for 100% participation.  Donations made to the GW Community Foundation are tax deductible.

Thank you for your support!

GWCS CLASS RINGS...

Would you like to order a GWCS Class Ring?  All juniors will automatically receive a ring order packet with a glossy brochure.  If you are not a junior but you would like to order a class ring, ask Ms. Mauney for a ring packet.  Ring orders will be collected at GWCS on November 10th during lunch.  A Balfour representative will be at school to answer questions, assist with sizing and help with order forms.  This is a big decision so take some time to look at all of the options!
