Last Week at GWCS:
June 13 - 18, 2016

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The last student of the week for the year is CATALINA SMITH for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE.

Catalina strives for excellence in seemingly all her endeavors. Whether she is asking her teachers for constructive guidance on how to make her work A + material, acclimating to the GWCS community without sacrificing her fiercely independent spirit, or laughing loudly and boldly, Catalina does it with determination, thoughtfulness and self-assurance.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

PAC PAW PRINTS...

Coyote PAC is a GWCS program designed to more formally incorporate the wealth of parental resources and talents that are so obviously abundant in our community.   PAC Paw Prints is a section of the weekly newsletter where you can catch-up on all PAC related news and events.

PAC Year-end recap:

It has been my pleasure to serve as PAC Secretary this past school year.  I enjoyed meeting and working with you, if not in person then vicariously through the various project team leads.  GWCS is blessed with a vibrant and involved PAC and it shows through all the work we did.  Here’s a brief, non-exhaustive list of activities:

  • The Auction raised over $18,000 with over 100 donations and over 500 bids.  This money will be used to improve the school experience for our children.  Ms. Warden will be sending out more details at a future date.

  • The Graduation Committee has been in full swing busily preparing to send off this year's graduating class in style. Thirty-five parent volunteers have been engaged in such varied tasks as measuring seniors for caps and gowns, making quilts for each senior, helping seniors and their parents create Memory Boards, preparing decorations, ordering food and beverages for the reception, and a multitude of other tasks necessary to make this special day a success.

  • The GWCS Community was very active in service to others:

o   Parent volunteers made over 600 sandwiches for McKenna's Wagon in in DC.

o   We and the SGA collected over 200 pairs of socks for the homeless and gave them to the Lamb Center in Fairfax.

o   We and the SGA ran a pajamas and books drive for children and teens living at The Katherine Hanley Family Shelter (part of Fairfax's Shelter House)

o   GWCS helped bring Christmas to the students attending Accotink Academy by helping to fill a child's wish list. We helped the Accotink students bring Christmas to their families by donating gently used items for a Christmas Shop at Accotink Academy.

o   On a rainy Saturday in April a hearty troop of students, teachers and parents (led by Ms. Warden and Ms. Newton) helped with watershed cleanup at Lake Accotink in honor of Earth Day.

o   Many students (and Ms. Warden) participated in a CERT exercise in Lorton as victim actors in May.

o   The above were the projects under the Pac Community Service Umbrella. Our students, parents and teachers led our school in many other community service projects: Ronald McDonald House, Runs, Walks and food drives.

o   Look for possible garden and parking lot yard sale Community Service opportunities this summer

  • The Coyote PAC provided quarterly teacher appreciation events including brunch/lunches and surprise coffee deliveries. For teacher appreciation week, the first full week of May, special activities and events were planned for each day. This year, these included a gift card raffle, notes of appreciation to all staff members from both students and parents/caregivers, a catered-in lunch, clean outs of staff cars (including window washing!) courtesy of our students, and coffee and treats.

  • We painted some more classrooms, and Cassie’s office.  Cubbies, classrooms and offices will be painted over the summer.

  • New couches for the common area and projectors for the classrooms were acquired.

  • Various facility enhancements were investigated, but not yet implemented such as new electrical service for the projectors and kitchen area, and new flooring for the science and robotics labs.

Thank you for your efforts, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Warmest regards,

Bob Carter, PAC Secretary
pac-secretary@gwcommunityschool.com

GWCS FOUNDATION...

2015 - 2016 ANNUAL FUND

The GW Community School Foundation is wrapping up our 2015/16 Annual Fund.  Currently, we have raised over $28,000 in the fund.  We are in the process of giving out scholarships for the 2016/17 school year.

If you haven't had a chance to contribute to the Annual Fund, please feel free to make a donation of any size you are comfortable with (100% participation is our goal!), at the foundation donation link:  http://www.gwcommunityschoolfoundation.com/support-us.html

All funds raised by the foundation are utilized to pay for scholarships for current GWCS students who have financial difficulties arrive in their time at the school, or for prospective students whom would be a good fit for the school but who don't have the financial means available to them for full tuition.  Please consider how GWCS has benefited your child, and consider passing on that opportunity to another student who might not have the chance to experience GWCS.

CARDBOARD BOAT RACE...

Although the official Lake Accotink Cardboard Boat Regatta was canceled due to anticipated thunder storms (which never arrived), Dr. Cox arranged for her Honors Physics students to race their boat, The Ugly Duckling, against a previous years boat, Luminiferous, at Lake Barcroft on Thursday, June 9th.  Thanks to the parents, students and alumni who helped make this happen, especially the Miiles family who made it possible for us to use Lake Barcroft.  After all of their hard work it would have been really disappointing to not have this opportunity.

PAC #1) SENIOR MEMORY BOARD PARTY & REMINDER

Seniors' completed Memory Boards are due to Ms. Mauney on Monday, June 13th.  I wish to thank the Seniors and Parents who were able to attend the Memory Board Parties. I really enjoyed meeting all of you and watching your Memory Boards in progress. What I learned from this experience is this project takes at least a few days time and effort. If you haven't started your Memory Board please make the time to do so soon. If you have questions or need assistance with the process please feel free to reach out to me. I am still available if needed.

I am looking forward to seeing all of the completed Memory Boards at graduation. Congratulations to the GWCS Class of 2016!

PAC #2) FACILITIES WORK WEEKEND SUCCESS!

Last weekend, a small group of dedicated parent volunteers put a fresh coat of paint on Mrs. Sinichko's office walls upgrading from a stark white to a soothing "winter solstice" blue/grey which goes nicely with her paintings by Ms. Warden.  Special thanks to Bob and Kim Carter, and Chris Massey.  They also painted the utility sink closet in the hallway with a couple needed coats of grey Kiltz.

In addition, Jan Syers, Ellen Sullivan and Nancy Burns are almost done with recovering the café chairs with a more durable (and washable) black vinyl and they look great!

Thanks for giving up your Memorial Weekend to volunteer at GWCS!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is MAX GINSBERG for demonstrating the GWCS value of KINDNESS

"Max is always asking if there is anything he can do to help me out in the lab and has given up valuable after-school, lunch, and holiday time to assist. Max always finds a way to cheer you up whether through asking about your day, showing you a picture from his internship, or finding a slide whistle to play (some of us think it’s the most underrated instrument around here)."  ~Ms. Newton

"I see Max reaching out to new students to make them feel comfortable more than any other student in the school.  Although I'm not a new student, Max texted me when I was out sick recently just let me know he was thinking about me."  ~Mr. AB

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is JOEY KELLEY for demonstrating the GWCS value of KINDNESS

Everyday acts of kindness can be hard to quantify, but Joey consistently interacts with everyone in the GWCS Community with positivity and thoughtfulness. In class, he is always willing to help others. His inclusive and open spirit help makes our school a better place. He even helped carry an injured student up the stairs during our most recent fire drill.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

CYSTIC FIBROSIS WALK...

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

GWCS students and families are cordially invited to join the GWCS team at the annual Reston Great Strides 5K Walk for Cystic Fibrosis on Sunday, May 22 at 2:30 pm (check in opens at 1:30 pm) at Brown's Chapel Park off Baron Cameron Ave, across from Lake Anne. The walk is less than three miles and is a lot of fun. After the walk, there is food and hang-out time.

This may be the last major community service opportunity of the year and a great cause. If you do not have your hours, it is imperative that you go. You will receive three hours for yourself and three additional hours for each friend or family member you bring along.

We realize that May 22 is the first day of the Senior Beach Trip, so we will be offering a beach trip CF Walk alternative. Seniors will still need to register on "Team GWCS Coyotes", but can walk at the beach with Ms. Warden in support of finding a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Thank you and I hope to see you there,

Mr. Connelly

PAC FACILITIES WORK WEEKEND...

Do you paint?  Move furniture?  Cut fabric or know how to handle a staple gun?  If so, GREAT – we need you!  If not, GREAT! – we can teach you J

The plan is this - let’s get the school spruced up before the seniors leave, and have this all done and ready for next year’s students!

We need:

  • Using a template, cut out 20ish pieces of easy clean leatherette for the chairs
  • Using a screwdriver and staple-gun, cover the cushions
  • Using your brute strength, move objects away from the walls and cover things with drop cloths
  • Using typical paint equipment, paint the remaining few classrooms and offices.

Date For Chairs – make your own schedule, or bring the bolt of fabric home to cut and return for others to install

Dates For Painting - 1st opportunity:  Memorial Weekend - Friday, May 27ththrough Monday, May 30th.   If too many people are not available, we’ll finish up the weekend of June 4th (Saturday afternoon prep), June 5th (paint)

If we STILL aren’t finished, we’ll wrap up the weekend of June 10 (Friday) through June 12th

Do you need to be inspired?  Take a look at the chairs already completed in the Café, or the common areas and the classrooms that were painted during the previous paint weekends.  The school is really looking good!

Questions?  Contact Melissa Morgan, Facilities Chair at pac-facilities@gwcommunityschool.com

Next Week at GWCS:
May 7 - 15, 2016

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is PRESTON SULFSTEDE for demonstrating the GWCS value of LEARNING.

Preston puts his heart into every assignment in every class every day, and has faithfully done so all year.  Preston is always motivated to start the next page, chapter, step of a new journey at all times.  One teacher told me, regarding Preston, "I have never had to ask him to get ready for class, but on several occasions he has had to ask me!"  His classes are enhanced by his presence.  That should be every student's goal!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS Values: Learning, Service, Kindness, Excellence, Responsibility, Investment, Team Play, Intellectual Curiosity

Click on the link below to register.

Thank you and I hope to see you there,

Mr. Connelly

PAC #1) Teacher appreciation week synopsis

The GWCS staff were treated to a Teacher Appreciation week full of goodies and special surprises.  GWCS students wrote personalized thank you notes to individual teachers and parents were invited to do the same.

Other events to honor our wonderful teachers this week included a choose-your-own gift card “raffle”,  vacuumed cars and clean car windows, dashboards and cup-holders courtesy of Melissa Morgan and GWCS students, and a catered-in lunch with homemade desserts.

Friday, Coyote teachers and staff were treated to coffee drinks and treats for Coyote Day.  A big thank you to all the parents who helped make the week extra special by donating their time to plan and run events!

PAC #2)  GRADUATION MEMORY BOARD PARTY

(MAY 9 @ 6:30 PM)

The Memory Board tradition at GWCS is a wonderful way to highlight the achievements and good times of graduating seniors on their special day. Please start gathering photographs, memorabilia, and items that reflect your personality, interests, accomplishments and anything that you wish to say and share about yourself and your experiences – here at school and beyond. All items need to be glued or taped to a 3-sided poster board, and Completed Memory Boards are due to the school on Monday, June 13th.

To help students get the process started, a Memory Board Party will be held at 6:30 pm on Monday, May 9th. Senior parents and students are encouraged to attend. Please bring your pictures, poster board and supplies if you are ready to get started. If you are stuck and having trouble feeling inspired, I have lots of ideas and some samples of previous Memory Boards to help inspire you.

Looking forward to seeing you on May 9th!

Next week, GWCS students and families show their appreciation to our wonderful Coyote teachers and staff!

Thank You Cards:  We will be providing students cards to write personal thank you notes to their teachers. We invite parents to do the same!  Please write your notes, seal them into envelopes and put the name of the staff person on the front of the envelope. 2016 GWCS OBX - EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING...

OUT OF THE BOX EDUCATION

Every Friday during fourth quarter, GWCS freshmen and sophomores are engaged in all-day collaborative and experiential learning activities.  (On the same days, GWCS juniors and seniors are off campus at their R.E.A.L. Term Internships.)

Funds raised from the online auction allow us to provide exciting, challenging, one-of-a-kind learning opportunities (and yummy lunches)! From running actual DNA tests to ziplining—petting a dromedary to paddling the Occoquan Reservoir—OBX offers learning experiences you can’t afford to miss.

(Literally, you really can’t afford to miss OBX days because your grade will suffer, and it’s listed as a separate course on your transcript, and colleges really really love that we offer this class because they expect most of their incoming freshman to be mere receptacles of information that they “learned” from packets and have no real knowledge of the world or experience.)

2016 OBX Schedule

  • 4-29-16…...Paper Roller Coaster Contest
  • 5-6-16….…Coyote Day
  • 5-13-16…...Team Building at Hemlock
  • 5-20-16…...SciTech Forensics and Maryland Science Center
  • 5-27-16…...Reston Zoo
  • 6-3-16…….Fountainhead Canoe Trip & Naturalist Tour
  • 6-10-16...…University of Mary Washington Tour

A lot of time, planning, thought and effort goes into each of these events.  (Thank you Sharon Saile!)  Every Friday will be packed full of fun and learning!  Students are expected to be at school on time; they will receive a letter grade each week; and at the end of the quarter they will receive 0.25 credit for a class called “Experiential Learning”.   Please do not plan appointments for Fridays.  Each week you will receive a detailed email with instructions from the lead teacher for that week’s event.  Watch for and read these emails carefully for information on what to wear and what to bring as this will change every week.

YAY FOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is BRIAN CONNER for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE.

"Spring fever has not undermined this Junior's work effort.  Brian continues to be a star in the community.  His demonstration of excellence is evident in all of his efforts.  His class work has been exemplary.  His review of conditions in Medieval European cities written in a made-up, (bizarre) English dialect had his entire class laughing.  On the same day he submitted a review of Bill Bryson's book A Short History of Nearly Everything that was masterfully written.  Brian is also a regular contributor in Music Club, Theatre/Improv, History in Movies, and other endeavors!"  ~Mr. Goldie

PAC #1)  PAJAMA PROGRAM

(APRIL 13 – APRIL 30)

Since our sock drive was so successful, we've decided to hold another drive! This time, we're going to be collecting NEW pajamas and NEW books for children and teens that are part of the Pajama Program. This program supplies pajamas and books for less fortunate children, many of whom are waiting to be adopted. This drive starts right now and ends on April 30th. We are looking for:

  • NEW teen and toddler sized pajamas
  • NEW teen and toddler appropriate books

Be sure to donate! Have your child bring in any donations and donate them in the bin labeled "Pajama Drive" (located in the cafe).  If you would like to learn more about this amazing program, please visit the website:  http://pajamaprogram.org/who-we-are

PAJAMA PROGRAM MISSION

Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need nationwide, many of whom are waiting to be adopted. These children live in group homes, shelters and temporary housing facilities and are shuffled often from one place to another. Many of them have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Most of these children have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a parent tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story. Some of the children are living with their families below the poverty level, in desperate need of food, clothing and shelter. These two simple gifts of pajamas and books let the children know that someone cares - sometimes these are the only new things they have ever received.

As in past years, PAC will provide some type of appreciation event each day that week.  Examples of events in past include catered lunch in; teacher raffle of items and gift cards; items from students (ex. signed flower pots); coffee delivery in morning; pre-packaged, take-home dinners for teachers’ families;  brunch/lunch with items prepared by parents; masseuse brought in. We are NOT limited to these events; other ideas are welcome!

I am asking you to consider what you could volunteer to take on one day of that week, plan and implement it.  There are PAC funds for teacher appreciation, so you will not need to spend your own cash!  And if your chosen event involves getting other parents to donate time or dishes, I will create the sign-up for you and I will put ONE announcement in the Next Week at…. with all the events listed, so all parents will be informed and have opportunities to sign up with specific events as appropriate.

Please reply to me (TA chair Kelly Henderson Hagen at hendersonhagen@verizon.net) by COB, Monday, April  25 and let me know which days of that week you are available to “take a date” and your thoughts/plan for the event (e.g., “I will run a raffle and am available Tues or Wed”; “I will coordinate a catered lunch and am available any day!”).  I personally will take any date that is leftover, and I will send you all a confirmation of the plans for the week by the 27th.

Thanks for your help making our teachers and staff feel extra appreciated!

PAC #3)  GRADUATION MEMORY BOARD PARTY

(MAY 9 @ 6:30 PM)

The Memory Board tradition at GWCS is a wonderful way to highlight the achievements and good times of graduating seniors on their special day. Please start gathering photographs, memorabilia, and items that reflect your personality, interests, accomplishments and anything that you wish to say and share about yourself and your experiences – here at school and beyond. All items need to be glued or taped to a 3-sided poster board, and completed Memory Boards are due to the school on Monday, June 13th.

Click for larger view of sample GWCS Memory Boards from years-gone-by.

To help students get the process started, a Memory Board Party will be held on Monday, May 9th at 6:30 pm. Senior parents and students are encouraged to attend. Please bring your pictures, poster board and supplies if you are ready to get started. If you are stuck and having trouble feeling inspired, I have lots of ideas and some samples of previous Memory Boards to help inspire you.

Often parents create the memory board as a surprise for their graduate.  Whether it's a surprise or completely designed and created by the senior is up to you!

Looking forward to seeing you on May 9th at 6:30 pm!

PAC #4)  STUDENT LOUNGE APPLE BOWL

(NOW THRU TO THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR)

Apple Donations Needed for the Student Lounge Apple Bowl

Click on apples to sign-up for a week.

Click on apples to sign-up for a week.

Just an observation from the mid-term breakfast - parents donated plenty of apples and as the following week went on, they dwindled day by day. It was good to see Coyotes munching on apples.

So, this is the start of a healthy Coyote tradition.

There is a plastic blue bowl in the Student Lounge area that we have been using to place apples in on a weekly basis. Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Gala, Golden, are conveniently available at the Giant Market next to GWCS. Five pound bags cost from $2.99 to $5.99 a bag.

Please sign up HERE for a week to make a donation of apples Student Lounge Apple bowl

Then drop them off at school for the week that you volunteered for. You can place them in the blue bowl or leave the bag on Ms. Mauney's desk. (Students can wash their own apples...)

Students and Staff have been enjoying the treat when they appear. Please help with year-end studies and graduation preparations by keeping the Apple Bowl filled.

Thank You!

ANNOUNCING GWCS OBX 2016...

Thank you to everyone for already turning in your permission form for these seven exciting Fridays:

  • 4-29-16…...Paper Roller Coaster Contest
  • 5-6-16….…Coyote Day
  • 5-13-16…...Team Building at Hemlock
  • 5-20-16…...SciTech Forensics and Maryland Science Center
  • 5-27-16…...Reston Zoo
  • 6-3-16…….Fountainhead Canoe Trip & Naturalist Tour
  • 6-10-16...…University of Mary Washington Tour

A lot of time, planning, thought and effort goes into each of these events.  (Thank you Sharon Saile!)  Every Friday will be packed full of fun and learning!  Students are expected to be at school on time; they will receive a letter grade each week; and at the end of the quarter they will receive 0.25 credit for a class called “Experiential Learning”.   Please do not plan appointments for Fridays.  Each week you will receive a detailed email with instructions from the lead teacher for that week’s event.   Watch for and read these emails carefully for information on what to wear and what to bring as this will change every week.

Yay for experiential learning!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is EVELYN SCHULMAN for demonstrating the GWCS value of LEARNING.

"To say Evelyn exemplifies the value of learning is an understatement. I am pretty sure she is off memorizing the periodic table as we speak! Did I mention she isn't even in chemistry yet? Evelyn finished her third quarter project while still in second quarter, gets every possible point on tests, and will probably diagram the Krebs cycle for you if you ask. Evelyn's love of learning is contagious and certainly makes my job more fun!" ~Ms. Newton

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

HERE'S WHAT...

Dear All,

Thank you all so much for attending Wednesday night's PAC Meeting! The food was incredible and it was so great to see you all face to face. I know that many of you made your best effort to get there, and thanks for communicating on that front—I still owe you a few emails :) which will come shortly. Highlights and lowlights of the meeting follow:

We had a great speaker in Angela Conerly, Executive Director of Mindworks Education! Angela was incredibly entertaining and knowledgeable regarding best approaches to standardized testing and the best ways to go about preparing for and taking both the SAT and the ACT. I’ve worked with Angela for years, and we share the same educational philosophy when it comes to standardized testing, which is very refreshing in northern Virginia—a space so crazy that it deserves its own zip code—one with 18 numbers. Though I could never recreate all that Angela informed us of, here a few of the things that Angela and I agree wholeheartedly on:

  • Maintaining GPA is more important than trying to raise test scores.
  • ANY Test prep course should be aimed at: 1. Familiarizing the student with the test. 2. Taking the time to reteach any spotty content. 3. Preparing students for “game-day” mishaps and how to handle them. 4. Teaching students to deal with test anxiety. 5. Providing problem-solving strategies that will benefit the student far beyond what the college application process entails.
  • The point of taking a test-prep course is NOT to raise your child’s scores so that you can get into an “out-of-reach” college where your child will have to work 90-hours a week to keep up. Rather, it is to allow students to best show what they know, feel great about taking the tests, and get money. Yep, I said it. Get money.

Secondly, I had planned on providing those in the audience with much more information regarding graduation and our own college process. What are senior quilts? What’s up with that college essay retreat both Angela and Alexa referenced?  What are the graduation volunteer positions that still need to be filled? Who goes to graduation? And what about the Pajama Drive?

Here’s what. I had totally planned on discussing all of those things with you and more, but when I looked out into the audience and saw all of our senior parent faces, I knew that this was their last PAC meeting. I became overwhelmed with emotion. Senior parents, I love you all so much. You have given our kids and our school so much. I just couldn’t go on. I will miss you more than you know, but hope I won’t have to. (I’m having lunch with the mother of a graduate from ’04 next week. Her son, and our alumni, is now a pediatric cardiac surgeon.) So keep in touch.

Here’s a hint about graduation that you should take to heart. You should be sure to come:

“ I didn’t attend graduation for my son’s freshman year.  My thought was that it had nothing to do with our family.  I couldn’t have been more wrong!  After a casual conversation with a fellow parent, we attended the following year.  We ALL were SO GLAD that we attended!!! It was such a heartwarming and moving experience!   I joined the graduation committee thereafter, and looked forward to graduation day.  It was a time when the whole school came together and celebrated what it meant to be a GWCS Coyote!”  The transformations and accomplishments of these gifted students were on full display at graduation!  It was a brilliant day wrapped in encouragement, love, and celebration for the next chapter of our students’ lives!”   -Jeanine Ferguson

Until next week,

Ms. W.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is RYAN BURNS for demonstrating the GWCS value of INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY.

Ryan turned Intellectual Curiosity into an Intellectual Experience.  He took Algebra class to a higher level with his questions and then used what he learned about 3-D graphing function in the game Minecraft.  Ms. Shumard said her favorite Ryan question of the week was: "Do you thin Ms. Warden would get mad if I made lava in the parking lot?"

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

PAC #2)  Pajama Day

On Monday, April 2nd, GWCS students and staff wore their pajamas to school.  In the afternoon Karen Duffy, with the Pajama Program, came to talk to the students about how this very important program got started and why it exists.  Ms. Duffy is very excited to be working with GWCS.

"By distributing new pajamas and new books to children in need, we are able to help provide children with a comforting, nurturing bedtime and literacy support. Our reading center helps to bridge the 30,000,000 word gap and gives these children the opportunity to read one on one with an adult, something they may not otherwise experience."   ~ Pajama Program

As a community we will be collecting pajamas and books for the Pajama Program in the near future... details in next week's PAW Prints.

Thank you,

Julia O'Grady, PAC Community Service Chair

PAC #3)  Student Lounge Apple Bowl

Thank You!

Linda Campbell, PAC Volunteer Chair

BASKETBALL BANQUET...

After 54 GWCS basketball games and countless numbers of hours spent in practice, the season came to a close at the 15th annual basketball banquet.  Nearly every player from all three teams, the managers, their families, their coaches and Ms. Warden were all decked out in their finest evening gear.  There was much conviviality leading to fine dining and entertainment.  There were speeches, stories, awards, gifts and trophies.  The centerpiece of the evening was the highlight/interview video compiled by Coach K.  Such a good time was had by all that we going to do it again next year!

SGA ST. PATTY'S DAY AUCTION RESULTS...

FAST & FURIOUS BIDDING

Thank you to everyone who contributed their treasured junk to the Annual SGA Live St. Patty's Day Auction which took place Thursday, March 17th, of course.  In addition to the contributions, thank you parents for filling your child's pockets with auction cash!  SGA earned $460 auctioning everything from old GWCS sofas to big floppy fake flowers, a dog water bottle, a pea pod serving dish, shiny purple arm warmers, a music stand that was auctioned as a mad max mask, and even a single lost shoe sold. Our ridiculous auctioneers, Ronan Taylor and Josh Clark made us feel like we just could not live without each and every item they auctioned.   Their quick wit and creativity was more entertaining than the crazy stuff they were auctioning.  The Live Auction proceeds will go towards SGA sponsored events such as the upcoming Prom.

TURTLE CARE UPDATE & REMINDER...

Our Coyote Turtles are adapting really well to their beautiful new habitat.  A lot of time and effort has gone into getting the aquarium setup and developing a care program.  After spring break a few students will be trained to feed and medicate the turtles daily as well as how to clean the tank weekly.  The following is a really important message for ALL of our community!  Salmonella are naturally occurring bacteria with turtles.  Therefore, if you put your hand in the water or pickup a turtle, PLEASE REMEMBER TO WASH YOUR HANDS!
