b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG

The Student of the Week this Week is ELIZABETH CRONIN for demonstrating the GWCS value of RESPONSIBILITY.

Are you familiar with the saying ‘mail it in?’  Neither is Elizabeth.  ‘Mailing it in’ means delivering an uninspired performance, quitting before the finish line, or giving up on a project.  Elizabeth embodies the opposite of these sentiments.  If anything, her teachers are in agreement that Elizabeth is doing her best work as the year comes to a close.  She thoughtfully adds to her classes, spends her time wisely, and never comes to class unprepared.  Elizabeth is demonstrating the kind of dedication and responsibility that will serve her well as she matures as a successful student in high school and in college!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS VALUES: LEARNING, SERVICE, KINDNESS, EXCELLENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, INVESTMENT, TEAM PLAY, INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY

coyote CLEANUP #2
SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2018
8:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Last Saturday morning, a pack of 16 Coyotes students and parents did NOT sleep in – they tightened screws on cabinet doors, refreshed whiteboards, scrubbed tables, vacuumed, sorted, cleaned and organized the GW Community School spaces.  It looks great!  In fact the pack worked SO hard, that the Fix-It/Clean-It day #2 should take much less time (sorry to those wanting to do more community service!).

Still to do are:

  • Hang the new world map wallpaper
  • Paint two classroom walls
  • Touchup paint everywhere (patching complete)
  • Paint door trim
  • Hang several new framed prints

This is a great community service opportunity for students!  Sign up using link below and remember to sign the log at school when you arrive and when you leave so we know how many hours of community service you earned!

SOME BUNNY NEEDS A NEW HOME...

LOVING HOME NEEDED:  My name is Rachael and I am a student at GWCS. Sadly, I need to give up my pet bunny and therefore I am looking for a loving home.  Thumper is her name and she is a four month old frmale, solid black bunny. We purchased her from Petland in Fairfax.  Thumper is super-duper friendly and cute. The only problem is, she thumps.

CAGE & CARE:  I will give you everything you need including the cage, food, water bottle, toys, and hay! The cage should be cleaned one to two times per week or, at a minimum, once every two weeks. Beware the cage will get a little smelly after a week or so. I would recommend keeping the bunny away from where everyone sleeps. As I mentioned, she thumps.  In addition to rabbit pellet food, Thumper loves carrots and green foods as special treats.  Thumper has been to all the doctor’s appointments and is healthy as can be.

PLAY & SNUGGLE:  Thumper likes to be let out of her cage to play.  She doesn’t bite at all. If she starts biting on the cage it just means she’s lonely, bored, or ready to play. You could put your finger into her mouth and she would not do a thing.  She just needs attention and love. Bunnies are social animals. Thumper also loves to cuddle and sit with someone while they do homework or reading… etc.

ADOPT MY BUNNY:  I really want to give Thumper to a loving, caring family.  I would appreciate it so much if someone would adopt her.  If no one takes her in, we will have to send her to the pound.   If anyone is interested in taking my bunny in, please let me know before school ends.  Feel free to contact me with any questions!

    Much appreciated,

    Rachael

    COLLEGE APPLICATION WORKSHOP...

    Admissions 101 Workshop
    Monday, July 23, 2018
    09:00 am - 12:30 pm
    McDaniel College
    2 College Hill
    Westminster, MD 21157

On Monday, July 23, 2018, McDaniel College will be hosting an Admissions 101 workshop -- a special program designed to help students create their strongest college application --before they actually begin to submit applications to any colleges.

We will discuss the major components they want to include in every application and the best practices we know for building their strongest presentation as a candidate for admission. Beginning with an introduction to the McDaniel Commitment and Community followed by a morning of activities that will help prepare students’ applications for admission, breakout sessions will allow them to select parts of the application process that they need to prepare for and get started on them now.

    • Got the first draft of an essay written? Bring it with them and we're happy to do a friendly personal review.
    • Need to build a resume? We will get them started.
    • Not sure how to build or narrow a college search list? We have ideas on that as well!
    • Have questions about the financial aid process? Our financial aid office will discuss how to begin the FAFSA.

Students who attend this event will have their $50 application fee waived AND they will qualify to receive our $1,000 Visit Incentive Grant (a total value of $4,000 over four years) when they submit their completed application by our December 15th Early Action II deadline and are admitted!

Register today in order to reserve your place. For any questions regarding this event, we would be happy to answer them by contacting us at 800-638-5005.

    -The McDaniel Admissions Team

P.S.  We're open all summer long and ready to host your students. And, the same visit application fee waiver and incentive grant apply to any one of our daily or group visit events!  You'll find our calendar with available dates and easy online registration on our summer visit page!

    b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
    2018.05.25_Laura Massey_LEARNIING.JPG

The Student of the Week this Week is LAURA MASSEY for demonstrating the GWCS value of LEARNING.

Laura is a dedicated learner. She is always engaged in class discussions in English, and she enthusiastically tackles her writing assignments and shares her creative work with teachers. Even in mathematics, a subject which Laura will tell you she doesn’t enjoy, she puts her nose to the grindstone, asks lots of questions, and completes her work with flying colors.  Laura will often tell a teacher if she is excited by a lesson, or her thoughts on the latest book that the class is reading. Most importantly, Laura is perseverant – she puts into consistent practice a healthy growth mindset, the attitude that with enough work, grit, and a willingness to learn from mistakes, she can master any concept.

Thank you PAC for the overflowing, scrumdiliumptious take-home dinner you provided us on Wednesday!  Where to begin?  Thick juicy pork chops and perfectly grilled flank steak, crab cakes, roasted tofu, vegan chili, cheesy broccoli, chicken and rice casserole, homemade mac & cheese, cauliflower puree, fresh broccoli, green beans, roasted brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes, mixed vegetables, spinach orzo salad, broccoli and bacon salad, and various other green salads.  The best part was that the way it was set up, we picked up containers and started building our take-home dinner at the dessert table which was loaded with cookies, banana pudding, cupcakes, chocolate pie, strawberries, oranges and more!

    b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG

The Students of the Week this Week are all of the members of Coyote Theatre (also known as ‘The Bit-Off More-Than-We-Could-Chew Players’) for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT!  Congratulations to Delia O'Grady, Anne Callaway, Nick O'Neal, Conner Sulfstede, Lizzie Weber, Emily Granger, Gabe Kimmel, Christian Bowman, Kian Monette, Jack Dwyer, and Kelley Carlisle for all three evenings of the amazing performances that they gave us last week.  Yes, the innocuous, hardly noticeable, virtually invisible GWCS Theatre Department has done it again.  Sort-of in the style of our heroes at The American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, they produced four shows at the same time.  Many players were in multiple shows, many players had multiple parts in the same shows, and multiple shows had multiple characters on stage at multiple times.  It was great.  I heard it was great!  The cast (who also played monkeys in another show at the same time called ‘The Crew’) started rehearsing in early March.  That’s two full months of dedicating yourself to rehearsals, memorizing all your lines for all of the shows that you are going to be in, and eating cookies.  It is a level of dedication that most people can only dream of achieving!  Theatre, the single most sophisticated endeavor a human being can pursue, was beautifully presented to us, once again, with grace and poise, by the world’s smallest (as far as you know) theatre troupe in the history of man!  Thank you!  100%.  Congratulations!

GWCS Theatre Directors:  Dr. G & Mr. G

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

    Dear GWCS Community -

Thank you once again for your generous contributions to our online auction and fundraising efforts. This school year has flown by, and I can hardly believe our 2018 graduating class will be in their caps and gowns in less than 57 days.  I get teary just thinking about it!  I'm so proud of our seniors, and of all of our students and faculty.

As you know, anyone who chose to give a direct donation will see their name -- with our thanks -- in our GWCS 2018 Graduation Program (unless you opted to donate anonymously).  As we prepare for graduation, we wanted to give everyone another opportunity to donate directly to GWCS.  We have five donation levels, and any amount is welcome and appreciated as a way to honor our  GWCS students, faculty and school.

    Here's the link:  http://www.gwcommunityschool.com/support-us/#anchor-donate

    FIRST-CMP'18-Detroit-Horiz.jpg

Coyote Robotics FTC Team 3749 Bionic Penguins had a great trip to the FIRST World Championships in Detroit last week.  Our robot worked pretty well, despite a few hurried repairs between matches, but the competition was very tough.  The Championship Winners scored 6 glyphs in Autonomous and completed all the tasks and were waiting on the balancing stone with 20 seconds left in the match!  We won 3 of 9 qualification matches and finished ranked 44 out of 64 in our division (two spots higher than another Virginia team from Ashburn).  Next to our pit was a team from The Netherlands and one of our alliance partners was a team from Poland.  Teams from 15 countries were there among the 128 FTC teams.  Our kids and parents got to see the true vision of what an FIRST Tech Challenge can be and are already excited about doing new stuff for the coming season.

For now, we will continue meeting on Wednesdays from 3:15-5:00 PM for any interested.  We will work on ideas and plans for the next season as well as build robots for fun and learn to program them.  If you plan to attend on a given Wednesday, please stop by my classroom and tell me or email me to let me know you are coming.  That way if no-one is coming I can go home.

Thanks to everyone who participated and helped support our program this year.  Next year all four programs will have a common theme of FIRST Launch 2019 commemorating Apollo 11’s Mission to the Moon 50 years ago.  Next year’s FTC game will be called “Rover Ruckus”.

Hope to see you on Wednesdays!

The Memory Board tradition at GWCS is a wonderful way to highlight the achievements and good times of graduating seniors on their special day.  Some seniors like to make their own Memory Boards while others are surprised with the Memory Board their parents create for them - that is an individual family decision.

The boards are displayed in a dedicated Memory Board room at the Masonic Temple during the GWCS graduation and reception. This gives others a chance to know the graduates and know what has been important in their lives.  Memory Boards are a tradition at GWCS and truly make the graduation day special for everyone.

Please RSVP (through like below) so that we can plan for you.  Hope to see you then and there!

Lead by Melissa Morgan (experienced GWCS Memory Board maker and parent of a senior).

    GWCS SPRING THEATRE PRODUCTION

Loki Theatre Comedy Tragedy Mask Small Ribbon.jpg

    An Evening of One Acts

    (tickets)

    The Boor
This Chekhov comedy features two characters, set in there ways, distinctly not trying to fall in love, and one servant, distinctly not condoning the amorous advances of the crass debt-collector and his matron.  Somebody is not going to be getting their (wild) oats tonight!

    The Sure Thing
Time and space stumble all over each other trying not to get run over in the path of love.  As Bill and Betty try to get acquainted, each syllable leads them to the precipice of missing the Woody Allan Festival and spending the rest of their lives alone!  Waiter!

    The Philadelphia
Metaphysically, they are in a Philadelphia.  Physically they are in the middle of GWCS, where nothing is going right for either of them, until Mark realizes that there is nothing more opposite than the opposite sex!  So…

    This is a Test
Is Alan dreaming, or does Mrs. Williams actually hate him (and love Evan)?  Standardized testing would be impossible if it weren't for mother’s home-baked cookies!  This is a cookie!

    GOAL ALMOST MET!

The deadline for your name to appear in the graduation program is Memorial Day, May 28th.

    Thank you again, as always.

    Warmly,

    Alexa

    b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
    2018.04.20_Emma Creskoff_EXCELLENCE.jpg.jpeg

The Student of the Week this week is EMMA CRESKOFF for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE!

Emma is relatively new to the GWCS community, and we are so happy to have her here.  She has been a consistently exceptional student and is a treasure to have in class.  She is always prepared, participates in class, and is always kind.  She provides very thoughtful answers and insights whether she is volunteering a response or called upon. The quality of Emma’s work is excellent; her writing is wonderfully imaginative and chock full of understated wit.  It is truly a pleasure to read.  In math class, Emma diligently tries on every problem and explains her answers to the class when called upon. Emma shines every day and is a wonderful new addition to the GWCS community.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

    EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING...

    every friday thru june 8th!

    FRESHMEN & SOPHOMORES

Click here to read OBX INFO in previous newsletter.

    OBX Grade & Credit:

While we at GWCS lovingly refer to it as “OBX,” your child’s high school transcript will denote one quarter credit of “Experiential Learning,” which is what OBX is all about. Please note that this is listed on the transcript as a separate grade and carries just as much weight as any academic class. Many colleges are now including experiential learning opportunities for their students because they understand the importance of being able to learn in real world settings. The fact that GWCS students have already shown success in this type of learning environment sets them apart.

Because this is listed as a separate grade on the transcript, and because we can only grant credit for participation and enthusiasm, please do not schedule appointments, college visits, or family trips during the eight OBX days.

We truly believe in these special opportunities for learning. We treasure the teachable moments we encounter. And, the life lessons imparted on each OBX are irreplaceable.

Thanks in advance for your support of this unique and important program.

    Ms. Warden

    b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG

The Student of the Week this week is ANNE CALLAWAY for demonstrating the GWCS value of RESPONSIBILITY!

Anne can handle it.  It doesn’t matter what it may turn-out to be!  Is she running the GSA meeting?  Is she a main character in one of the spring plays?  Is she the student-director for one of the spring plays?  Is she selling hotdogs to raise money for the Prom?  Is she on the prom planning committee?  Did she shop for food for event night?  Did she go to CVS to buy ice packs for an injured teacher?  Did she have the school credit card in her wallet for a week?  Did she navigate the streets of New York with casual aplomb?  Will she listen to your next concern with earnest and empathy?  Have I left anything out?  If you said ‘no,’ to any of these questions, then you don’t know Anne.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GRADUATION QUILTS - PIN & SEW...

    VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

    quilt.jpeg

Every year PAC parents sew a twin size quilt for each graduate.  Ms. Warden personally selects a meaningful fabric print for each graduate's quilt. The print selected is based on the students' interests and personality. Parent volunteers sew the print fabric to a twin size comforter.

Before graduation, the quilts are laid out at school for an autograph party. Students, teachers, staff, and even alumni  happen to stop by, sign the back of the quilts (much like you would a yearbook) with fabric markers. b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
    Christian Bowman.JPG

The Student of the Week this week is CHRISTIAN BOWMAN for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT!

Christian always maintains excellent grades, but that is only part of what he brings to the table.  After finishing another successful season of robotics, Christian has thrown himself into the hard-working world of GWCS theatre by accepting an important role in one of the four one-acts currently in production.  If the ‘Student of the Week’ award was strictly based on grades, then Christian would be a candidate every week.  He is the winner this week  because he knows that being successful at school is more than just grades!

The quilts are presented to each graduate at the graduation ceremony by fellow underclassmen.  It's a very meaningful GWCS tradition!

No sewing experience necessary.   Contact Linda Campbell if you have any questions.  Click the button below to sign up for one or all the pin & sew sessions!

    Photo Mar 01, 2 59 37 PM.jpg

The Student of the Week is LUKE HEILMAN for demonstrating the GWSC value of INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY!

Luke is omnipresent in his classes. Luke is driven by mastering the information available in every class, and demonstrating his mastery in class discussions. In particular, his leadership in discussions on Dante’s Inferno has been exemplary. Dr. Garon was not kidding when he said “Luke should consider teaching it the next time it is offered.’ His insightful participation in Geometry class last week caused Mr. Goldie to ask him if he thought he was ready to ‘snatch the pebble from the teacher’s hand?’ Luke said nothing. He was definitely thinking, ‘Yes. Yes I am.’

The Students of the Week this week are Cate HartnettDelia O’Grady, and Lizzie Weber for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE

Delia, Lizzie and Cate (Fresh-off of leading the GWCS girls to the ISSAC championship) went to the league all-star game, and turned it into a GWCS clinic on basketball excellence!  They all played high quality basketball and their squad won the game going away.  Parents from other ISSAC school could be heard saying that the GWCS girls were clearly out-playing every other school.  In the end, with all three GWCS girls dominating the game, Cate was voted the MVP of the all-stars with Lizzie and Delia right behind!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

    2018.01.05_Josh Bellows_RESPONSIBILITY.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is JOSH BELLOWS for demonstrating the GWCS value of RESPONSIBILITY.

To fill the open space in his senior schedule, Josh elected to become a Teacher’s Assistant, and he takes his job seriously.  Josh’s professional attitude belies his youth.  Josh is always involved in class discussions and class research.  This week he volunteered to help set-up videos for the students who were waiting to leave on the field trip.  Josh is always willing to help other students with homework and computer issues.  Josh is more than a TA, he is unofficially part of the school staff.  He is also able to track-down Mr. Goldie faster than anyone else at school!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

    b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
    2018.02.23_Laura Massey_TEAM PLAY.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is LAURA MASSEY for demonstrating the GWCS value of TEAM PLAY.

Laura embodies Team Play both in and outside the classroom. When in class, she doesn’t hesitate to help her peers with assignments, or to explain concepts to other students. She assists in cultivating a productive learning environment by always staying engaged with the lesson at hand, and by asking and answering questions when she can. More than this, Laura always brings with her to school an enthusiastic attitude that is contagious. Quick to give a smile and have a conversation, her cheerful energy is a great boost to morale around school. She is an invaluable member of the GWCS pack, and this kind of exceptional Team Play is what makes her the Student of the Week.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS VALUES: LEARNING, SERVICE, KINDNESS, EXCELLENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, INVESTMENT, TEAM PLAY, INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY

    b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
    2018.02.16_Emily Burger_LEARNING.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is EMILY BURGER for demonstrating the GWCS value of LEARNING.

Emily loves to learn.  As a result of this, she has improved her grades substantially. Emily's recipe for success is as follows:  1) She is always focused and diligent in class.  2) She has a positive attitude that is infectious.  3) She strives to get the most out of every assignment or activity.  4) She is not afraid to ask questions to get better and better at something she is learning, and she pays close attention, taking the best notes that you can find.  Organization and dedication have helped Emily come a long way. One of her teachers said that she is a student “who keeps her nose to the grindstone on every assignment that she is given”. Also, Emily is a great team player.  She is kind enough to help peers when they need extra help and is an excellent individual to have in any group where collaboration is important.   Another example of what makes Emily great is her strong commitment to our stellar girls’ basketball team. She has truly flourished this year learning to be a better basketball player and practicing hard at improving her killer shot.  Emily is just starting to show her full potential and truly personifies what it means to be an avid learner in our GWCS community.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.
