MEMORY BOARD MAKING PARTY...

SATURDAY, April 28th from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Attention Senior Families:  If you haven't started your Memory Board, (or aren't sure what a Memory Board is), no worries!   This is a great time to see examples of Memory Boards, explore ideas, find your inspiration and get started.  If you have already started the project, you can use this time to keep going.  The goal is to have fun with this project.

DSC_0332.jpg

Things to bring to the party;
(but come anyway if you don't have this yet):

  • - shoeboxes of photos and memorabilia that reflect the personality, interests, accomplishments or anything else you wish to highlight about the senior
  • - a tri-fold science project type stand-alone board (36"x 44" available at craft stores)
  • - any other supplies you have and may use

We will have:

  • - Additional scrapbooking supplies (scissors, assorted paper, glue dots, tape etc)
  • - Snacks and drinks
  • - Inspiration and encouragement

The Memory Board tradition at GWCS is a wonderful way to highlight the achievements and good times of graduating seniors on their special day.  Some seniors like to make their own Memory Boards while others are surprised with the Memory Board their parents create for them - that is an individual family decision.

The boards are displayed in a dedicated Memory Board room at the Masonic Temple during the GWCS graduation and reception. This gives others a chance to know the graduates and know what has been important in their lives.  Memory Boards are a tradition at GWCS and truly make the graduation day special for everyone.

Please RSVP (through like below) so that we can plan for you.  Hope to see you then and there!

Lead by Melissa Morgan (experienced GWCS Memory Board maker and parent of a senior).

GWCS SPRING THEATRE PRODUCTION

Loki Theatre Comedy Tragedy Mask Small Ribbon.jpg

An Evening of One Acts

(tickets)

The Boor
This Chekhov comedy features two characters, set in there ways, distinctly not trying to fall in love, and one servant, distinctly not condoning the amorous advances of the crass debt-collector and his matron.  Somebody is not going to be getting their (wild) oats tonight!

The Sure Thing
Time and space stumble all over each other trying not to get run over in the path of love.  As Bill and Betty try to get acquainted, each syllable leads them to the precipice of missing the Woody Allan Festival and spending the rest of their lives alone!  Waiter!

The Philadelphia
Metaphysically, they are in a Philadelphia.  Physically they are in the middle of GWCS, where nothing is going right for either of them, until Mark realizes that there is nothing more opposite than the opposite sex!  So…

This is a Test
Is Alan dreaming, or does Mrs. Williams actually hate him (and love Evan)?  Standardized testing would be impossible if it weren't for mother’s home-baked cookies!  This is a cookie!

GOAL ALMOST MET!

Dear GWCS Community -

Thank you once again for your generous contributions to our online auction and fundraising efforts. This school year has flown by, and I can hardly believe our 2018 graduating class will be in their caps and gowns in less than 57 days.  I get teary just thinking about it!  I'm so proud of our seniors, and of all of our students and faculty.

As you know, anyone who chose to give a direct donation will see their name -- with our thanks -- in our GWCS 2018 Graduation Program (unless you opted to donate anonymously).  As we prepare for graduation, we wanted to give everyone another opportunity to donate directly to GWCS.  We have five donation levels, and any amount is welcome and appreciated as a way to honor our  GWCS students, faculty and school.

Here's the link:  http://www.gwcommunityschool.com/support-us/#anchor-donate

The deadline for your name to appear in the graduation program is Memorial Day, May 28th.

Thank you again, as always.

Warmly,

Alexa

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING...

every friday thru june 8th!

FRESHMEN & SOPHOMORES

OBX #1 - College Lesson and Tour at George Mason Univeristy...

OBX Grade & Credit:

While we at GWCS lovingly refer to it as “OBX,” your child’s high school transcript will denote one quarter credit of “Experiential Learning,” which is what OBX is all about. Please note that this is listed on the transcript as a separate grade and carries just as much weight as any academic class. Many colleges are now including experiential learning opportunities for their students because they understand the importance of being able to learn in real world settings. The fact that GWCS students have already shown success in this type of learning environment sets them apart.

Because this is listed as a separate grade on the transcript, and because we can only grant credit for participation and enthusiasm, please do not schedule appointments, college visits, or family trips during the eight OBX days.

We truly believe in these special opportunities for learning. We treasure the teachable moments we encounter. And, the life lessons imparted on each OBX are irreplaceable.

Thanks in advance for your support of this unique and important program.

Ms. Warden

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
2018.04.20_Emma Creskoff_EXCELLENCE.jpg.jpeg

The Student of the Week this week is EMMA CRESKOFF for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE!

Emma is relatively new to the GWCS community, and we are so happy to have her here.  She has been a consistently exceptional student and is a treasure to have in class.  She is always prepared, participates in class, and is always kind.  She provides very thoughtful answers and insights whether she is volunteering a response or called upon. The quality of Emma’s work is excellent; her writing is wonderfully imaginative and chock full of understated wit.  It is truly a pleasure to read.  In math class, Emma diligently tries on every problem and explains her answers to the class when called upon. Emma shines every day and is a wonderful new addition to the GWCS community.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG

The Student of the Week this week is ANNE CALLAWAY for demonstrating the GWCS value of RESPONSIBILITY!

Anne can handle it.  It doesn’t matter what it may turn-out to be!  Is she running the GSA meeting?  Is she a main character in one of the spring plays?  Is she the student-director for one of the spring plays?  Is she selling hotdogs to raise money for the Prom?  Is she on the prom planning committee?  Did she shop for food for event night?  Did she go to CVS to buy ice packs for an injured teacher?  Did she have the school credit card in her wallet for a week?  Did she navigate the streets of New York with casual aplomb?  Will she listen to your next concern with earnest and empathy?  Have I left anything out?  If you said ‘no,’ to any of these questions, then you don’t know Anne.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GRADUATION QUILTS - PIN & SEW...

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

quilt.jpeg

Every year PAC parents sew a twin size quilt for each graduate.  Ms. Warden personally selects a meaningful fabric print for each graduate's quilt. The print selected is based on the students' interests and personality. Parent volunteers sew the print fabric to a twin size comforter.

Before graduation, the quilts are laid out at school for an autograph party. Students, teachers, staff, and even alumni  happen to stop by, sign the back of the quilts (much like you would a yearbook) with fabric markers. The quilts are presented to each graduate at the graduation ceremony by fellow underclassmen.  It's a very meaningful GWCS tradition!

QUILT VOLUNTEERS pin & sew (and talk and laugh) Saturdays!

No sewing experience necessary.   Contact Linda Campbell if you have any questions.  Click the button to sign up for one or all the pin & sew sessions listed below!

Pin & Sew Dates:

  • April 7th from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
Christian Bowman.JPG

The Student of the Week this week is CHRISTIAN BOWMAN for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT!

Christian always maintains excellent grades, but that is only part of what he brings to the table.  After finishing another successful season of robotics, Christian has thrown himself into the hard-working world of GWCS theatre by accepting an important role in one of the four one-acts currently in production.  If the ‘Student of the Week’ award was strictly based on grades, then Christian would be a candidate every week.  He is the winner this week  because he knows that being successful at school is more than just grades!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS VALUES: LEARNING, SERVICE, KINDNESS, EXCELLENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, INVESTMENT, TEAM PLAY, INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
Photo Mar 01, 2 59 37 PM.jpg

The Student of the Week is LUKE HEILMAN for demonstrating the GWSC value of INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY!

Luke is omnipresent in his classes. Luke is driven by mastering the information available in every class, and demonstrating his mastery in class discussions. In particular, his leadership in discussions on Dante’s Inferno has been exemplary. Dr. Garon was not kidding when he said “Luke should consider teaching it the next time it is offered.’ His insightful participation in Geometry class last week caused Mr. Goldie to ask him if he thought he was ready to ‘snatch the pebble from the teacher’s hand?’ Luke said nothing. He was definitely thinking, ‘Yes. Yes I am.’

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG

The Students of the Week this week are Cate HartnettDelia O’Grady, and Lizzie Weber for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE

Delia, Lizzie and Cate (Fresh-off of leading the GWCS girls to the ISSAC championship) went to the league all-star game, and turned it into a GWCS clinic on basketball excellence!  They all played high quality basketball and their squad won the game going away.  Parents from other ISSAC school could be heard saying that the GWCS girls were clearly out-playing every other school.  In the end, with all three GWCS girls dominating the game, Cate was voted the MVP of the all-stars with Lizzie and Delia right behind!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
2018.01.05_Josh Bellows_RESPONSIBILITY.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is JOSH BELLOWS for demonstrating the GWCS value of RESPONSIBILITY.

To fill the open space in his senior schedule, Josh elected to become a Teacher’s Assistant, and he takes his job seriously.  Josh’s professional attitude belies his youth.  Josh is always involved in class discussions and class research.  This week he volunteered to help set-up videos for the students who were waiting to leave on the field trip.  Josh is always willing to help other students with homework and computer issues.  Josh is more than a TA, he is unofficially part of the school staff.  He is also able to track-down Mr. Goldie faster than anyone else at school!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
2018.02.23_Laura Massey_TEAM PLAY.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is LAURA MASSEY for demonstrating the GWCS value of TEAM PLAY.

Laura embodies Team Play both in and outside the classroom. When in class, she doesn’t hesitate to help her peers with assignments, or to explain concepts to other students. She assists in cultivating a productive learning environment by always staying engaged with the lesson at hand, and by asking and answering questions when she can. More than this, Laura always brings with her to school an enthusiastic attitude that is contagious. Quick to give a smile and have a conversation, her cheerful energy is a great boost to morale around school. She is an invaluable member of the GWCS pack, and this kind of exceptional Team Play is what makes her the Student of the Week.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
2018.02.16_Emily Burger_LEARNING.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is EMILY BURGER for demonstrating the GWCS value of LEARNING.

Emily loves to learn.  As a result of this, she has improved her grades substantially. Emily's recipe for success is as follows:  1) She is always focused and diligent in class.  2) She has a positive attitude that is infectious.  3) She strives to get the most out of every assignment or activity.  4) She is not afraid to ask questions to get better and better at something she is learning, and she pays close attention, taking the best notes that you can find.  Organization and dedication have helped Emily come a long way. One of her teachers said that she is a student “who keeps her nose to the grindstone on every assignment that she is given”. Also, Emily is a great team player.  She is kind enough to help peers when they need extra help and is an excellent individual to have in any group where collaboration is important.   Another example of what makes Emily great is her strong commitment to our stellar girls’ basketball team. She has truly flourished this year learning to be a better basketball player and practicing hard at improving her killer shot.  Emily is just starting to show her full potential and truly personifies what it means to be an avid learner in our GWCS community.

Special thanks to Ms. Mauney who is very good at valentine-ing!

Ms. Mauney surprised everyone by decorating the cafe for Valentine's Day including pink and white streamers and red roses on all of the tables.  Ms. Mauney also hid five valentine cards around the school and the lucky students who found them received a sweet treat!  Thanks for the ❤ Ms. Mauney!

Cate, Lizzie, Gabby, Delia, Laura, Kelley, Elizabeth, Mattie, Emily, Evelyn, and Cecilia have put together a fantastic season. Not only are they the first girls’ team to win the coveted, steak dinner, they are the first GWCS team to go undefeated in a full season of ISSAC games. They have secured the top seed in the league playoffs, and they are two victories away from winning the first ISSAC Championship in school history (after coming-up just a few points short last February)! They have one home game left, next week, so if you want to see what excellence looks like on the basketball court, don’t miss it! Also, if you come to the game, Delia promises not to travel!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
2018.02.02_Elizabeth Cronin_EXCELLENCE.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is ELIZABETH CRONIN for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE.

After crushing her midterms last week, all A’s, Elizabeth took a long weekend and then came back and picked-up in the third quarter right where she left-off! Elizabeth had (yet another) great week of classes, turning in assignments, playing in two basketball games, and being a good friend to everybody in her path. Earlier this week one of her teachers was heard saying, ‘That kid is going to be a great college student. She totally understands what it takes to do well in school.’ If you’re trying to change your study habits, look no further. Elizabeth is the gold-standard for how to do well in school!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
Anne Callaway.JPG

This week we have a tie for the Student of the Week - not between students but between values!  The Student of the Week this week is ANNE CALLAWAY for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE and KINDNESS!

Excellence:  Anne embodies the GWCS value of excellence— not just this week, but every week. Anne is a doer! But she is also a “committer” and a “follow through-er”. Anne doesn’t need a lot of kudos, but she sure does deserve them.

Anne is an integral member of our theatre program, a manager of both boys and girls basketball, the head of our Gay-Straight Alliance, and an active activist. Anne is on a path of consistent and never-ending improvement. She makes our school a better school each day.

Anne is a wonderful listener, a true understander, a positive presence, an eager forgiver, and a loyal friend. Thanks, Anne for being the best you you can be!

Kindness:  Who cares about you?  Anne Callaway.  Anne is the walking epitome of what it means to care about others.  Anne is a willing volunteer who helps whenever she can.  She comes to every GWCS basketball game (boys and girls) and keeps stats and helps run the games.  She started the GSA two years ago to bring awareness, advocate, and fight for human rights causes here, there, and around the globe.  You may feel, at times, like the world is full of apathy and indifference, but you are mistaken. Anne cares.

Perhaps you could donate a buy-a-spot class or outing.  Another way to create a buy-a-spot is to plan a fun activity (e.g., dinner party, wine and paint party), arrange the supplies and place, and create spots for the number of people you'd like.  Some buy-a-spots in past years include gourmet dinner for 8, beer tasting, honey tasting, cooking class, tours....

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
Photo Sep 08, 2 39 25 PM.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is JONATHAN SCINTO for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT!

Jonathan is known for getting down to business.  His attitude of investment permeates his academics as well as his community interactions.  As soon as Jonathan enters a classroom he is ready to learn.  He follows instructions, turns assignments in on time, asks thoughtful questions, and completes classwork efficiently.  Jonathan is an active learner - not a dawdler.  Ms. Kohler recently described two beautiful and completely edible 3-D models of plant and animal cells that Jonathan created over the winter break.  Because he's an active and engaged learner, Jonathan is always eager and often available to help teachers with classroom tasks and caring for lab animals.  He also signs up for every community service opportunity offered at GWCS and participates with interest and enthusiasm.  During lunch Jonathan is a dedicated Smasher.  His positive energy and giddiness is contagious.  Teachers and students alike appreciate having a friend in Jonathan.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

The Student of the Week this week is CONNER SULFSTEDE for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT

Conner did not know that when he enrolled at GWCS that he was a basketball player.  In fact, he had never played basketball before, but Mr. Connelly convinced him that the basketball team needed him.  Conner immediately changed his morning workout routine to include basketball practice.  He arrives early everyday and practices harder than any other player in the gym.  He dresses for every game and has recently been called-on to start in the last two games!  Last week he scored a critical basket in the team's victory against The New School.  Conner's contribution to the team's success can only be described as A-1!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
2018.01.05_Josh Bellows_RESPONSIBILITY.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is JOSH BELLOWS for demonstrating the GWCS value of RESPONSIBILITY!

Everyone knows that Josh is a good student, but not everyone knows that Josh has a formula for being a good student, although others would be wise to learn from his example. Josh often spends an hour after school doing his homework before he goes home (home—Notoriously not a good place for many people to get homework done). Josh will, at times, open a book and read for fifteen minutes during the school day (reading, the one trait that truly separates successful students from every other student). Also, last week, when nobody else could/would do it, Josh wrote thirty, tongue-in-cheek, Christmas jokes for the Holiday Pageant in his spare time! Josh takes his responsibilities seriously, works to maintain his good grades, and makes an effort to help-out whenever he can. He also knows what Gary Busey asked Santa Claus to bring him for Christmas!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

All GWCS junior families are asked to sign up for a 30 minute conference with Ms. Warden and Mr. Pereira on either Thursday, February 1st or Friday, February 2nd.  The sooner you sign up the more likely you are to get the day/time that works best with your schedule.  This seems super early to be announcing this but we understand that some families need more advanced planning to schedule a day time conference.

The purpose of the junior family conferences is to discuss the GWCS college application process which begins NOW.  There are so many steps that can, and should, be taken during junior year to ensure a smooth, successful and enjoyable senior year.

GWCS R.E.A.L. TERM CO-OP PROGRAM
Realistic Education and Authentic Learning

All GWCS Juniors & Seniors

important dates:

✔ Nov. 16, 2017 - Co-Op Information Meeting

✔ Dec. 6, 2017 - Resume Writing Workshop

  • Jan. 5, 2018 - Co-Op Letter of Intent Due by 4:00 pm (Letter of Intent Form)

  • Jan. 2018 - Once Intent Forms have been submitted, Ms. Warden and Mrs. Stombres will meet with students individually to discuss and approve their Co-Op plan.

  • April TBD, 2018 - Student Co-Op Training Session

  • April 20 - June 8, 2018 - Friday Co-Ops

What is the GWCS R.E.A.L. Term SPRING Co-Op PROGRAM?

Each spring, GWCS juniors and seniors take part in an experiential learning program that introduces them to possible career paths, fosters academic interests, and offers meaningful, first-hand work-based experiences. Every Friday from April 20 - June 8 our students will go their “jobs” rather than school.  The hours of the “work day” are flexible and depend on the host’s needs and/or preferences.

Finding a Host

Many students find their own opportunities through a family connection, church/local community, or they can go online and find local business/programs and ask them to host them. Many of our own parents offer GWCS students the opportunity to work with them personally!  We have found that when we have a personal connection with our hosts, our students end up having a great experience.

Parent Sponsors

We are always looking for new opportunities for our students. Being a member of the GWCS Community makes you an ideal host... you get us!  You already know how great all of our students are and what a cool program this is.  Please email: Stombreskl@GWCommunitySchool.com if you are interested in hosting a student this year. Keep in mind, it is only eight (8) Fridays, and the hours of the work day are flexible, whatever works for your schedule.  Offering a student a place with your program gives them the opportunity to engage in real world learning, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and learn how to be dependable, show initiative, and to be self-motivated.

The Students of the Week this week are the cast and crew of The Actor’s Nightmare for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT

Nick O’Neal, Jack Dwyer, Anne Callaway, Lizzie Weber and Delia O’Grady are the actors and they have been supported tirelessly by Emily Granger, Kian Monette, and Olivia Powell.  Oh sure, a one act play sounds easy, but for every minute that the characters are on stage, the cast has spent an hour in rehearsal; which does not include the hours that they have spent memorizing their lines!  The Theatre Department may be a quietly unnoticed corner of our community, but the people who are invested in it are not to be overlooked.  They have invested time and effort to create an entertaining show, and they did it for us! ~Director Goldie and Assistant Director Garon

REFLECTING ON GWCS, 14 YEARS LATER

I have a board in my office with thank you notes from families and students.  It's a constant reminder of the hundreds of students who have come through our doors, and why GW Community School exists.  One mom, Jean Abood, reached out recently and said she wanted to help support GWCS in a bigger way this year - this from a parent whose son went to our school 14 years ago!  Please read her letter below, and feel free to share it with your family and friends and on social media.  We're grateful every day for the wonderful GWCS community that has thrived through the years.

FOOD FOR OTHERS

Ms. Kohler's Holistic Health Science class went to Food for Others Food Bank on Thursday, December 14, 2017 to donate 319 pounds of food! The entire school participated in contributing the donated goods. Food for Others supports 90,000 families in Fairfax County who have been diagnosed as food insecure (unsure of where their next meal will come from).

A Doctor's office in Burke, Virginia has started a pilot program, partnering with Food for Others, where they prescribe a food prescription for families in need. Ms. Kohler's Holistic Health Science class got a personalized tour of the facility and had a private Q and A session with the director! What an educational and heartwarming experience.
