b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
2018.02.16_Emily Burger_LEARNING.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is EMILY BURGER for demonstrating the GWCS value of LEARNING.

Emily loves to learn.  As a result of this, she has improved her grades substantially. Emily's recipe for success is as follows:  1) She is always focused and diligent in class.  2) She has a positive attitude that is infectious.  3) She strives to get the most out of every assignment or activity.  4) She is not afraid to ask questions to get better and better at something she is learning, and she pays close attention, taking the best notes that you can find.  Organization and dedication have helped Emily come a long way. One of her teachers said that she is a student “who keeps her nose to the grindstone on every assignment that she is given”. Also, Emily is a great team player.  She is kind enough to help peers when they need extra help and is an excellent individual to have in any group where collaboration is important.   Another example of what makes Emily great is her strong commitment to our stellar girls’ basketball team. She has truly flourished this year learning to be a better basketball player and practicing hard at improving her killer shot.  Emily is just starting to show her full potential and truly personifies what it means to be an avid learner in our GWCS community.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

Cate, Lizzie, Gabby, Delia, Laura, Kelley, Elizabeth, Mattie, Emily, Evelyn, and Cecilia have put together a fantastic season. Not only are they the first girls’ team to win the coveted, steak dinner, they are the first GWCS team to go undefeated in a full season of ISSAC games. They have secured the top seed in the league playoffs, and they are two victories away from winning the first ISSAC Championship in school history (after coming-up just a few points short last February)! They have one home game left, next week, so if you want to see what excellence looks like on the basketball court, don’t miss it! Also, if you come to the game, Delia promises not to travel!

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
2018.02.02_Elizabeth Cronin_EXCELLENCE.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is ELIZABETH CRONIN for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE.

After crushing her midterms last week, all A’s, Elizabeth took a long weekend and then came back and picked-up in the third quarter right where she left-off! Elizabeth had (yet another) great week of classes, turning in assignments, playing in two basketball games, and being a good friend to everybody in her path. Earlier this week one of her teachers was heard saying, ‘That kid is going to be a great college student. She totally understands what it takes to do well in school.’ If you’re trying to change your study habits, look no further. Elizabeth is the gold-standard for how to do well in school!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
Anne Callaway.JPG

This week we have a tie for the Student of the Week - not between students but between values!  The Student of the Week this week is ANNE CALLAWAY for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE and KINDNESS!

Excellence:  Anne embodies the GWCS value of excellence— not just this week, but every week. Anne is a doer! But she is also a “committer” and a “follow through-er”. Anne doesn’t need a lot of kudos, but she sure does deserve them.

Anne is an integral member of our theatre program, a manager of both boys and girls basketball, the head of our Gay-Straight Alliance, and an active activist. Anne is on a path of consistent and never-ending improvement. She makes our school a better school each day.

Anne is a wonderful listener, a true understander, a positive presence, an eager forgiver, and a loyal friend. Thanks, Anne for being the best you you can be!

Kindness:  Who cares about you?  Anne Callaway.  Anne is the walking epitome of what it means to care about others.  Anne is a willing volunteer who helps whenever she can.  She comes to every GWCS basketball game (boys and girls) and keeps stats and helps run the games.  She started the GSA two years ago to bring awareness, advocate, and fight for human rights causes here, there, and around the globe.  You may feel, at times, like the world is full of apathy and indifference, but you are mistaken. Anne cares.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS VALUES: LEARNING, SERVICE, KINDNESS, EXCELLENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, INVESTMENT, TEAM PLAY, INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY

LOOKING FOR: Buy-a-Spot Donation Ideas

Do you or a friend have a special talent or hobby - cooking, flower arranging, boating, fishing, etc? Perhaps you could donate a buy-a-spot class or outing.  Another way to create a buy-a-spot is to plan a fun activity (e.g., dinner party, wine and paint party), arrange the supplies and place, and create spots for the number of people you'd like.  Some buy-a-spots in past years include gourmet dinner for 8, beer tasting, honey tasting, cooking class, tours....

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
Photo Sep 08, 2 39 25 PM.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is JONATHAN SCINTO for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT!

Jonathan is known for getting down to business.  His attitude of investment permeates his academics as well as his community interactions.  As soon as Jonathan enters a classroom he is ready to learn.  He follows instructions, turns assignments in on time, asks thoughtful questions, and completes classwork efficiently.  Jonathan is an active learner - not a dawdler.  Ms. Kohler recently described two beautiful and completely edible 3-D models of plant and animal cells that Jonathan created over the winter break.  Because he's an active and engaged learner, Jonathan is always eager and often available to help teachers with classroom tasks and caring for lab animals.  He also signs up for every community service opportunity offered at GWCS and participates with interest and enthusiasm.  During lunch Jonathan is a dedicated Smasher.  His positive energy and giddiness is contagious.  Teachers and students alike appreciate having a friend in Jonathan.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS VALUES: LEARNING, SERVICE, KINDNESS, EXCELLENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, INVESTMENT, TEAM PLAY, INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
conner.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is CONNER SULFSTEDE for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT

Conner did not know that when he enrolled at GWCS that he was a basketball player.  In fact, he had never played basketball before, but Mr. Connelly convinced him that the basketball team needed him.  Conner immediately changed his morning workout routine to include basketball practice.  He arrives early everyday and practices harder than any other player in the gym.  He dresses for every game and has recently been called-on to start in the last two games!  Last week he scored a critical basket in the team's victory against The New School.  Conner's contribution to the team's success can only be described as A-1!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG
2018.01.05_Josh Bellows_RESPONSIBILITY.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is JOSH BELLOWS for demonstrating the GWCS value of RESPONSIBILITY!

Everyone knows that Josh is a good student, but not everyone knows that Josh has a formula for being a good student, although others would be wise to learn from his example. Josh often spends an hour after school doing his homework before he goes home (home—Notoriously not a good place for many people to get homework done). Josh will, at times, open a book and read for fifteen minutes during the school day (reading, the one trait that truly separates successful students from every other student). Also, last week, when nobody else could/would do it, Josh wrote thirty, tongue-in-cheek, Christmas jokes for the Holiday Pageant in his spare time! Josh takes his responsibilities seriously, works to maintain his good grades, and makes an effort to help-out whenever he can. He also knows what Gary Busey asked Santa Claus to bring him for Christmas!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS R.E.A.L. TERM CO-OP PROGRAM
Realistic Education and Authentic Learning

All GWCS Juniors & Seniors

important dates:

✔ Nov. 16, 2017 - Co-Op Information Meeting

✔ Dec. 6, 2017 - Resume Writing Workshop

  • Jan. 5, 2018 - Co-Op Letter of Intent Due by 4:00 pm (Letter of Intent Form)

  • Jan. 2018 - Once Intent Forms have been submitted, Ms. Warden and Mrs. Stombres will meet with students individually to discuss and approve their Co-Op plan.

  • April TBD, 2018 - Student Co-Op Training Session

  • April 20 - June 8, 2018 - Friday Co-Ops

What is the GWCS R.E.A.L. Term SPRING Co-Op PROGRAM?

Each spring, GWCS juniors and seniors take part in an experiential learning program that introduces them to possible career paths, fosters academic interests, and offers meaningful, first-hand work-based experiences. Every Friday from April 20 - June 8 our students will go their “jobs” rather than school.  The hours of the “work day” are flexible and depend on the host’s needs and/or preferences.

Finding a Host

Many students find their own opportunities through a family connection, church/local community, or they can go online and find local business/programs and ask them to host them. Many of our own parents offer GWCS students the opportunity to work with them personally!  We have found that when we have a personal connection with our hosts, our students end up having a great experience.

Parent Sponsors

We are always looking for new opportunities for our students. Being a member of the GWCS Community makes you an ideal host... you get us!  You already know how great all of our students are and what a cool program this is.  Please email: Stombreskl@GWCommunitySchool.com if you are interested in hosting a student this year. Keep in mind, it is only eight (8) Fridays, and the hours of the work day are flexible, whatever works for your schedule.  Offering a student a place with your program gives them the opportunity to engage in real world learning, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and learn how to be dependable, show initiative, and to be self-motivated.

TIME TO SCHEDULE YOUR JUNIOR FAMILY CONFERENCE

All GWCS junior families are asked to sign up for a 30 minute conference with Ms. Warden and Mr. Pereira on either Thursday, February 1st or Friday, February 2nd.  The sooner you sign up the more likely you are to get the day/time that works best with your schedule.  This seems super early to be announcing this but we understand that some families need more advanced planning to schedule a day time conference.

The purpose of the junior family conferences is to discuss the GWCS college application process which begins NOW.  There are so many steps that can, and should, be taken during junior year to ensure a smooth, successful and enjoyable senior year.

The Students of the Week this week are the cast and crew of The Actor’s Nightmare for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT

Nick O’Neal, Jack Dwyer, Anne Callaway, Lizzie Weber and Delia O’Grady are the actors and they have been supported tirelessly by Emily Granger, Kian Monette, and Olivia Powell.  Oh sure, a one act play sounds easy, but for every minute that the characters are on stage, the cast has spent an hour in rehearsal; which does not include the hours that they have spent memorizing their lines!  The Theatre Department may be a quietly unnoticed corner of our community, but the people who are invested in it are not to be overlooked.  They have invested time and effort to create an entertaining show, and they did it for us! ~Director Goldie and Assistant Director Garon

REFLECTING ON GWCS, 14 YEARS LATER

I have a board in my office with thank you notes from families and students.  It's a constant reminder of the hundreds of students who have come through our doors, and why GW Community School exists.  One mom, Jean Abood, reached out recently and said she wanted to help support GWCS in a bigger way this year - this from a parent whose son went to our school 14 years ago!  Please read her letter below, and feel free to share it with your family and friends and on social media.  We're grateful every day for the wonderful GWCS community that has thrived through the years.

FOOD FOR OTHERS

Ms. Kohler's Holistic Health Science class went to Food for Others Food Bank on Thursday, December 14, 2017 to donate 319 pounds of food! The entire school participated in contributing the donated goods. Food for Others supports 90,000 families in Fairfax County who have been diagnosed as food insecure (unsure of where their next meal will come from).

A Doctor's office in Burke, Virginia has started a pilot program, partnering with Food for Others, where they prescribe a food prescription for families in need. Ms. Kohler's Holistic Health Science class got a personalized tour of the facility and had a private Q and A session with the director! What an educational and heartwarming experience.

The Student of the Week this week is  GABE KIMMEL for demonstrating the GWCS value of SERVICE

Gabe is a doer!  If you need to get something done, you just need to mention it in front of Gabe!  Just like the globe Mr. Goldie started to mount to his ceiling five years ago, Gabe does not tolerate unfinished business.  Aside from mounting and hanging that globe, Gabe is selling snacks to raise funds to finish the aquaponics project (started in ’16), organizing the funds collected for the winter charity, subbing-in when the theatre department needs an extra body, teaching freshmen how to play backgammon, and just generally contributing to every part of the school.  Where’s Gabe?  He’s getting’ it done!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

The GWCS Theatre students have been rehearsing almost daily for their upcoming performance of The Actor's Nightmare.

"The Actor's Nightmare is a short comic play by Christopher Durang. It involves an accountant named George Spelvin, who is mistaken for an actor's understudy and forced to perform in a play for which he doesn't know any of the lines...

The play was inspired by dreams actors and performers often have in which they are about to go onstage and cannot remember their lines/rehearsal instructions. Durang himself had an actor's nightmare after performing in this play in which he could not remember any lines, could not find his script, and when he did find the script it was gibberish to him."  ~ Wikipedia

If you are trying to find someone to help with a project, move a piece of furniture, or find the answer to a history puzzle, start with Nick!  Nick values every opportunity.  He works hard, helps others, and enjoys doing it!  Aside from his regular amount of schoolwork and homework and his commitments to the basketball team and the robotics team, Nick has also added ‘lead in the school play’ to his list of duties!  Nick’s investment in his school makes his school a better place to be for everyone!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

b-banner-COMMUNITY SERVICE.JPG

SIGN UP FOR STREAM CLEANUP

On the last Wednesday of each month*, Ms. Kohler hosts a Stream Cleanup community service event where students will not only find themselves immersed in a do-gooder feeling but they will actually make a difference!  Students will practice environmentalism by cleaning up toxic trash that hinders our earth.  In addition to the obvious need to get pollutants out of our water, it has been proven that the more we cleanup the less likely people are to litter!   The location may vary each month, but will most likely take place around the Accotink Trail.

The group will leave GWCS at 3:25 pm and will return to GWCS no later than 4:45 pm for each adventure.  Space is limited to the first 12 students who signup through SignUp Genius each month.  Transportation will be provided for students to and from school.  Students will earn one hour of community service for each event.

  • WEAR long pants and sneakers or hiking shoes.
  • BRING a water bottle.
  • WORK GLOVES will be provided.

Reminder... students are expected to earn at least 30 hours of community service each school year.  Community Service Hours are recorded on student transcripts.

CLICK HERE TO READ ABOUT SEPTEMBER'S CLEANUP EVENT.

*Due to school holidays, some Stream Cleanup events will not be on the last Wednesday of the month, but on the last Wednesday we have school in that month.

SPRING BREAK TRIP TO BELIZE

As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is critical for our students to become more culturally aware, explore new ideas and grow their potential. Students who experience this opportunity will grow their social skills, connect to their studies outside of the classroom and set themselves apart when applying to college and their future careers. Students can also earn credit on tour by creating their own online research projects. I am inviting all of the GWCS students, and parents are welcome to travel as well, so there will be a very limited number of spots.

7TH ANNUAL
GWCS HERITAGE FEAST
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2017
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The Heritage Feast is an annual GWCS tradition that started back in 2010.   Students, teachers, grandparents, parents, siblings, and alumni all gather in the cafe to enjoy a never ending buffet of foods that celebrate the diversity of our school community.

We are asking families to contribute tasty dishes that reflect their heritage. If you feel that your culinary heritage has no pizzaz, don't worry. You can still join in by bringing your family's favorite dish.  We also need a few parent volunteers to help with setup and cleanup!

b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG

The Student of the Week this week is  EMILY GRANGER for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE

It is difficult to pick one value to describe Emily, but over the past week she has demonstrated excellence by keeping up with her classwork while at home recovering from surgery.  Emily arranged to Skype into classes so she would minimize the amount of instruction missed and maximize her participation from home.  During her absence from school, she managed to make up all of her math assignments and complete a written project for English class.  In short, she didn't allow recovery from surgery to prevent her from keeping up with her studies and finishing the first grading quarter.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

    ALL PARENTS PAC POTLUCK MEETING

    Thursday, November 9, 2017
    6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
    GWCS Cafe

All GWCS parents are encouraged to attend quarterly PAC meetings.  Please R.S.V.P. by Wednesday, November 8th so that we can plan accordingly.

    Dear Parents,

Please join me next Thursday, November 9th at 6:30 PM for our first PAC Parent Potluck of the year! You’ll have a chance to meet other parents, learn about our amazing online auction, our Co-Op and OBX programs, our foundation, and much more. Please make attending a priority! At GWCS it truly takes a village—and what an awesome village we have.

We are kindly requesting that each class sponsor different items. Click on the the /R.S.V.P./Sign Up button for details. However, come as you are whether in yoga pants or three-piece suit. AND, no shame in swinging by a drive through to pick up a snack. What’s most important is your presence. I promise you: this will be a super-fun event, and you’ll be glad you came!

Thanks in advance for your commitment and caring!

    Best,

    Alexa

    jack dwyer in lab.jpg

The Student of the Week this week is  JACK DWYER for demonstrating the GWCS value of EXCELLENCE.

If you’re ever feeling really dire,
Simply go and search out Jack Dwyer.
    Jack’ll have a fun joke
Cause he’s such a great bloke
And get you fast out of the mire.  (Why does Snoop Dogg carry an umbrella?)

When it comes to learning, Jack is king!
Studying with pals is now his thing.
    If you want to study,
    But need a buddy,
Consider Jack a Bing! (Even though we really use Google.)

So here’s to the Student of the Week!
He embodies the values we seek!
Excellence is a hard word to rhyme.
But Jack’s got it all of the time! (Excellence that is!)

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS VALUES: LEARNING, SERVICE, KINDNESS, EXCELLENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, INVESTMENT, TEAM PLAY, INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY

    b-banner-COMMUNITY SERVICE.JPG

    SIGN UP FOR STREAM CLEANUP

On the last Wednesday of each month*, Ms. Kohler will host a Stream Cleanup community service event where students will not only find themselves immersed in a do-gooder feeling but they will actually make a difference!

If you missed it last month, CLICK HERE to read about September's Cleanup Event.

*Due to school holidays, some Stream Cleanup events will not be on the last Wednesday of the month, but on the last Wednesday we have school in that month.

    b-banner-STUDENT OF THE WEEK.JPG

The Student of the Week this week is ZACH THORNHILL for demonstrating the GWCS value of TEAM PLAY.

Zach exemplified Team Play during the Senior Essay Writing Retreat.  He significantly contributed to creating a productive and cordial environment. He volunteered for necessary but not necessarily pleasant tasks (cleaning the kitchen after a dinner that required lots of pot, pans, and bowls), provided encouragement to new players while playing Frisbee, and positively acknowledged fellow students when they tried something new, whether it was Frisbee or eating salad.  In general, he helped turn a really good retreat into a great retreat.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

    TAKING STANDARDIZED TESTS...

The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is a test designed to help students practice for the SAT. It is also used to determine eligibility for scholarships awarded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

On Wednesday, October 11th, twenty-four GWCS students took the PSATs at GWCS. In addition to having the opportunity to practice taking a standardized test, many students were surprised to learn that it was their responsibility to arrive prepared to take the test including: eat a good breakfast, bring a snack, arrive on time, bring sharpened No. 2 pencils with good erasers as well as a calculator and to not bring electronic devices.  (Note: It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with rules and regulations for all standardized tests.  This is particularly important when you are taking a standardized test at a site other than GWCS.)

As students look ahead to taking SATs, Subject Tests, APs or ACTs during junior and senior years, please remember to consult the testing websites for all you need to know about being prepared for these tests!

GWCS offers SATs on four Saturdays during the school year.  Because GWCS is such a small testing site and our location is open to the public, we fill up very fast!  If you register and you do not see GW Community School on the testing site options, it is either because we are already full or we are not a designated testing site for that month.  REGISTER EARLY!

    • October 7, 2017 (SAT & Subject Tests)
    • March 10, 2018 (SAT)

The Student of the Week this week is OLIVIA POWELL for demonstrating the GWCS value of TEAM PLAY

Olivia is new to GWCS but has immediately immersed herself in the school values. She helped clean up Sr. Torres’ room when no one else would. Olivia always shares her school supplies with other students, even her top-quality art supplies! As an excellent artist she makes exemplar work for Ms. Kohler’s class binder, like her Energy Pyramid for example. Olivia also took on the administrator job in Ms. Kohler’s class; she tracks absent students, manages their missed work, and types up a running Word Doc with notes from each class which is accessible for all students.  In all her classes she is the go-to-girl when students have questions, helping all that need her assistance. To quote Olivia herself: “Working together is not only the best way to form a bond, but also the most efficient way to make friends that will feel like family.” Olivia is a bright, considerate, and extremely helpful team player!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.
