Students are expected to complete 30 hours of community service during the course of one full school year (7.5 hours per quarter). Accordingly, students whose transcripts show more than 30 hours went above and beyond what was expected, and students whose transcripts show less did not meet expectations. We hope that this information allows you to form a more complete picture of our students as participants in our community and in the world at large.   Community service hours completed prior to attending GWCS are not recorded."

If you have completed community service outside of GWCS, please remember to complete the community service form and turn it in to Ms. Mauney ASAP.

Please continue to support the school by bidding on auction items—we are nearing our goal!

See you at the next PAC Party on April 13th!

Best,

HERE'S WHAT...

Why should the kids get to have all of the fun? They get a homecoming party, prom, trips, clubs and much, much more. Don’t get me wrong. We love our kids and love having fun with them, but next Wednesday night…wait for it…It’s our turn!!! Please join me at our February PAC Potluck Parent Party! It’s next Wednesday, February 24th from 6:30PM to 8:00 PM. There will be a raffle, some fun prizes, and no embarrassing games (really). There will be a raffle, some fun prizes, an in-person look at some of our auction items, and no embarrassing games (really).

Here are the ground rules:

  1. Come as you are—whether you’re in your three-piece suit straight from the office, or sweaty yoga clothes “fresh” from the gym.
  2. Bring some food to share. It could be a bucket of chicken from KFC, or homemade Boeuf Bourguignon. And if you are running late, don’t worry about bringing a thing.
  3. Be ready to have some fun! Community is so important that we made it our middle name. You’re already a part of it, so come help us celebrate it!
  4. Be nice to me. I’ll steal a few minutes from the party to give you insider information on our R.E.A.L. Term and OBX programs. (Please nod, laugh, and clap at appropriate moments.)

I can’t wait to see you there! I need a little fun too! Don’t let me down, RSVP to me personally at wardenac@gwcommunityschool.com

Best,

Ms. Warden

He was prepared, poised, and thoughtful in leading discussion.

HERE'S WHAT...

I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to our entire community for an enormously successful midterm experience. Thank you to the PAC for providing healthy breakfasts for the students and our teacher appreciation brunch. Thank you to the teachers who helped create a positive and productive exam experience. AND, thank you to our wonderful students who worked so hard.

I was especially impressed with the success of the "no-electronics" policy once exams were finished. It was so wonderful and so strange to visit classrooms full of students reading books and coloring with pens and pencils. Students, I'm interested to get your take on this experience. Please stop by and see me or drop me a line to let me know how it went for you. Could there be a Wireless Wednesday in our future? Stay tuned.

Best,

Ms. W.

PAC #3 - THANK YOU FOR THE MUNCHIES!

  • FACULTY BRUNCH:

The Midyear Munchies faculty appreciation brunch on Wednesday, February 10th, was a huge and welcome success. In the midst of midterms, the Coyote staff were treated to a bountiful buffet of delicious treats.  A big thank you to all the families who contributed a dish for the event and to Kelly Henderson Hagen and her volunteers for organizing, setting up and breaking down the brunch.

  • STUDENT BREAKFASTS:

The Midterm breakfast snacks for students that were provided on each midterm exam day (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) were voraciously consumed and appreciated.  Starting the day at the gym woke their brains up and got their blood pumping and then they arrived at school to a buffet of healthy grab-n-go breakfast snacks such as bagels and cream-cheese; bananas and apples; string cheese; hard boiled and deviled eggs; granola bars, muffins and coffee cake; juice and milk.  Thank you to all the parents who contributed snacks and to Linda Campbell and her volunteers for orchestrating and setting up each morning.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is RYAN NICE for representing the GWCS value of KINDNESS.

Ryan's contributions to GWCS are numerous. He is a leader on the Basketball court and works hard to make everyone around him feel better at school. Ryan hits the gym at 7:30 am every morning and gives 100 percent. He is a supportive teammate that puts his heart into the game. Ryan never complains and is the first to defend his peers.  After playing every minute of each game Ryan is the first kid to help pick up chairs and make sure the gym is restored to it's pregame state (no small task).

Ryan can be seen talking basketball with one group of kids then 10 minutes later discussing video games or robotics with another group. He leads discussions in Government class and is eager to help his classmates understand the course material.

Ryan's kindness and sense of community is apparent to those around him and appreciated by all of us.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

HERE'S WHAT...

This is not a kind and gentle suggestion - I really, really need every student to read and follow these instructions!

yOUR COMPUTER NEEDS A GOOD NIGHTS REST!

Too many students are having major computer problems that can be avoided by following these simple guidelines:

Every night, before you go to bed...

  1. Plug your computer in to insure that (a) it will have a good strong charge for the next day and (b) so that it doesn't shut down, due to low battery, part way through important computer/program updates and cause other problems! (The blue screen of death, for example.)
  2. Shut down your computer.  Do not just push the power button.  Properly shutting down your computer EVERY NIGHT allows your computer programs to receive all the needed updates without interruption.

THE best WAY TO SHUT DOWN:

  • PC - Right click the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of your computer and select "shut down"
  • MAC - Choose the Apple menu and select "shut down"

SAVE ME!

One of the main advantages of GWCS moving to Microsoft 365 Business, in the cloud, was so that students would be able to keep all their school work in the cloud and access their work from any device.  Also, if their computer were to crash - all of their work would be safely stored in the cloud.

Have you been saving all of your school work in the cloud?

If you answered 'no' or 'I don't know' to that question, please send your advisor an email RIGHT NOW and let them know you need a refresher course on how/where you are supposed to be saving your school work.

Please take care of your computer and take advantage of Microsoft 365!

Best,

Ms. W.

PAC PAW PRINTS...

PAC #1 – MIDTERM BREAKFAST SNACKS

We survived Snowpocageddenzilla 2016!  And, midterms are delayed until February 10th, 11th and 12th.  Every year, PAC parents supply the midterm breakfast snacks each morning to fuel our coyote’s brains.  Protein packed snacks, like boiled eggs, paired with complex carbohydrates, like fresh fruit and granola bars, will help the students stay alert and stomachs satisfied. With that said, please do not contribute any sugary pastries, donuts and the like.

  • Here is a link to the list of snacks needed for Mid Term breakfast each day. Any left overs will be reserved for the next morning. (And Faculty will enjoy as well.)
  • Please keep in mind that we will need some gluten free snacks as well.
  • Nothing will be reheated or toasted - this is grab and go so individual packs of items are needed and will help keep clean up to a minimum.

Please bring your contribution to GWCS after drop off to the Gym.

Thank You!

Next Week at GWCS... February 1 - 6, 2016

COMMUNITY MEMBERS OF THE WEEK...

Service? Kindness? Team Play? Investment? Responsibility? Excellence? We couldn't pick just one value that was represented this week, nor could we pick just one student! The GW Community School Coyotes were out in force during the historic blizzard of 2016 making each of their communities safer by digging out fire hydrants. After receiving a call to action from our CERT leaders, (learn more about the GWCS CERT training here) Coyotes got on it, making sure that fire fighters would have immediate access to hydrants should the need arise. I couldn't be prouder of our efforts. Way to go Coyotes!   ~Ms. Warden

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

HERE'S WHAT...

MIDTERMS:

Due to the recent snow blizzard and school being canceled for seven days, we are moving midterms (and the end of 2nd quarter) back by one week!

NEW DATES:

  • Midterm Reviews will take place February 8 & 9

  • Midterm Exams will be proctored on February 10, 11, 12

  • Early Dismissal - 11:30 am - Friday, February 12

We at GWCS pride ourselves on providing our students with an excellent exam experience. We will start our exam days with the gym to get our minds and bodies in gear, share in a healthy breakfast provided by our parents, and take exams in a very low-stress environment.

Our teachers have designed our exams to take approximately an hour, and ALL students will have the accommodation of 100 percent extra time. We want our students to be able to showcase their mastery and to be able to take their time doing so. That said, students should bring non-electronic reading material to each exam should they finish early. A limited supply of magazines and newspapers will be provided.

Study guides will be emailed next week.

We've done everything we could think of to make this midterm exam period as pedagogically positive as possible!

Here's what you can do:

  1. Start studying now! Though study guides will be provided next week, we know that student-created study guides are really effective.
  2. Consider forming a study group with your classmates. Study groups work.
  3. Be responsible. Read the midterm schedule and our emails carefully. There is a lot of important information in that one little midterm sheet, especially expectations that you may not be aware of. Know where you need to be when.
  4. Please be aware that you will be expected to remain in your midterm classroom for the entirety of the midterm session.  Use of electronic devices after you have completed your midterm exam will not be allowed.  Bring a book or magazines.
  5. Get a good night's sleep before each exam.
  6. Take a deep breath and enjoy this exam experience!

Best,

Ms. W.

#1 – MidTerm Breakfast Snacks

January 25 - 29, 2016

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is DELIA O'GRADY for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT.

Yes, Delia is helpful around school.  Yes, Delia is a good student.  Yes, Delia is delightful.  No, you do not know the depth of Delia's dedication to the GWCS basketball team.  Despite a reoccurring ankle injury that has plagued her since early December, Delia has taped-up, and played in nearly every game in spite of every level of discomfort.  When she can't play, Delia still dresses-out and sits on the bench and supports and encourages her teammates.  She helps with equipment, films games, and always comes to practice.  In the inaugural season for girls basketball at GWCS, when commitment and dedication have been tantamount to success, Delia has been a super star!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

Next Week at GWCS... January 18 - 23, 2016

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is RONAN TAYLOR for demonstrating the GWCS value of INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY.

When Ronan wanted to learn more about whether it was possible to clone dinosaurs, he used available software to run his own analysis of the DNA found in a chunk of amber. When his results were different than those reported, he contacted the paleontologist Dr. Mary Higby Schweitzer at North Carolina State University to discuss his findings. Now that's curiosity in action!  (Ronan's TEDx Talk)

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

HERE'S WHAT...

A huge thanks to The Design Offices of Ann Marie Ternullo for this new coyote icon. It was custom-crafted for us and is a key element in a new visual design plan that we are launching in 2016.

Our new coyote needs a name! Send me your suggestions by CLICKING HERE.

The winner of the contest will receive a free tattoo of the icon on their forearm or shoulder at our Annual Coyote Day celebration the first Friday in May. (This last part was just a joke to check and see if anyone is really reading but the winner WILL receive a prize.)

Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, January 20th at 9:45 am.

Go Coyotes!

Thanks,

Ms. Warden

Next Week at GWCS... January 9 - 17, 2016

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

2016-01-08_Logan Pawlik-RESPONSIBILITY.jpg

The student of the week is LOGAN PAWLIK for demonstrating the GWCS value of RESPONSIBILITY.

When the basketball team was short a player, Logan stepped up and joined the team, and now he attends every game and films the girl's games as well. His attitude is so positive and mature that this week, a man at the gym came up to Mr. Fedinatz and started talking about what a great guy Logan is, and that's not even the first time something like that has happened.

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

GWCS Values: Learning, Service, Kindness, Excellence, Responsibility, Investment, Team Play, Intellectual Curiosity

PAC PAW PRINTS...

Coyote PAC is a GWCS program designed to more formally incorporate the wealth of parental resources and talents that are so obviously abundant in our community.   PAC Paw Prints is a section of the weekly newsletter where you can catch-up on all PAC related news and events.

#1 - SOCKS AND SANDWICHES:

The Community Service Committee and the SGA invite you to participate in a Socks and Sandwiches project.

  • SANDWICHES

Parents, please join us for the PB&J sandwiches making event for McKenna's Wagon.

DATE:     Tuesday January 26th
TIME:      8:30 am - 10:30 am
WHERE:  GWCS

Our goal will be to make 400 sandwiches. Your PAC will donate the fixin’s, so all you have to provide is the labor (of love).  The sandwiches you make will be distributed on McKenna’s Wagon, a volunteer-run, mobile food service that provides hot, nutritious evening meals, sandwiches, fruit, and snacks to 150 - 250 homeless men and women at three locations across the city every night.

An email will be going out in January with details on how to volunteer for this event.

  • SOCKS

Meanwhile, the SGA will be collecting socks for the shelter from now until January 26th.   Everyone is encouraged to bring in at least one pair of socks. Our goal is to collect at least 200 pairs of socks by January 26th. On January 26th, the PAC will be making sandwiches, and bringing them with the socks to the homeless. As we are entering the holiday season, just remember, not everyone can afford Santa. Don't get cold feet, jump in and help out the less fortunate.

#2 - THE 2016 GW COMMUNITY SCHOOL ONLINE SILENT AUCTION: fEB 17 - March 2, 2016:

Do you have anything to re-gift after the holidays? Anything that may not have been your cup of tea...or coffee...or wine. The Fundraising Committee could help you bring some new love to an item for an Auction Basket.

That is correct, Auction Baskets this year - Not Class Baskets.

So, take a look at the 2016 Online Auction Basket Donation Sign Up and consider donating an item. The Fundraising Committee will begin collecting donations January 11, 2016.

Please bring your donations to GWCS and place in the labeled bins in the cubbies near Cassie's office. Please leave any wine (or spirits) donations wrapped (bagged), labeled and under Ms. Mauney's desk (if she is not present). Please label with your name and the 'basket' it will accompany (this will reinforce info on the sign up and assist the Fundraising Committee with inventory - Thank You!).

Note: when signing up to donate - you do not have to collect everything if the slot has multiple items. Additional 'Sign Up' cues are added to these slots. Please list the items you are donating in the comments section. This allows other donors to know what is left on the list and assists the Fundraising Committee with inventory.

Auction Contacts: Deiadre Rauch and Deb Rosen

Thank You!

#2 - ACCOTINK HOLIDAY SHOP & SPONSOR A STUDENT FOR THE HOLIDAYS UPDATE:

Accotink School wishes to thank the GWCS Community for all of their contributions to the Holiday Shop and Sponsor a Student for the Holidays.

  • Holiday Shop

Jorge Menjivar, Co-Teacher at Accotink, said that the response was wonderful. They now had something for every student to shop for. The Holiday Shop allows students to use points that they have earned during the school year, to shop for presents for themselves and family members.  Mr. Menjivar and Senior Accotink students, transformed their school library into the shop. This event supports student age 5 to HS Seniors.  Tremendous thanks to all Coyotes who donated gently used to new items.

  • Sponsor a Student for the Holidays

We were able to aid in providing needy students with new gifts for the Holidays that their families are not able to purchase on their own.  And many of our GWCS parents shopped beyond expectations!

School therapists worked with each student to compile their lists. Primary list wants were clothing, school uniforms, and toiletries. And, we were able to collect 'fun' items to add that element of surprise.

Monday, December 14th, GWCS PAC volunteers held a wrapping party to handle gifts for some 35+ students. That was nearly 40 large plastic bags packed full of presents.  This meant that the teachers could focus on their jobs and not work late coordinating and wrapping.  Michelle Tiemann, OT in lead for this event, reported that the volunteers "...all have been a life saver!"  Special thanks to the creative wrapping team: Victoria Delgado Roman, Kathy Easeley, Cheryl Massey, Lynn Nice, Julia O'Grady, Jennifer Schulman, Jan Syers, and Linda Campbell.

Accotink teachers made the deliveries to the student's homes on the 15th.

Coyotes, both programs were an overwhelming success.  Thank you for your generosity!

#3 - SILENT AUCTION:

Many thanks for all of those who donated to the Annual Fund this Fall!  We have wrapped up the Fall Campaign with over $21,000 in our scholarship fund at the GW Community School Foundation.  Amazing!

While the Annual Fund raises money for scholarships through the foundation, the annual GWCS PAC online auction raises money for the current operating budget.  The two areas of focus for the funds are school trips and events, and technology.  The money raised from the auction, last year over $15,000, has been used to add amazing OBX trips, upgrade the Senior Essay Writing trip, the Junior Gettysburg trip and other class trips.  The technology piece has been used to buy projectors for all of the classrooms and upgrade our school technology system to the cloud. Without the funds raised from the auction, the school would not have been able to do these things.

We are gearing up to start our auction donation solicitations, and would love your help.  This year, we are going to do "auction baskets" versus "class baskets"; so we will have 4 baskets that anyone can donate to and bid on!  The baskets are:  Wine, Retro, Southwestern and "Off to College".  To make things easy and to give our community a chance to find some good items over the Holidays, Linda Campbell has designed a "Wish List" on Sign up Genius of ideas you can sign up for to donate an item to the baskets.  Click below to view the links and sign up for the baskets:

ACCOTINK HOLIDAY SHOP EXTENDED...

I have some great news! The Accotink Holiday Shop has been extended until Wednesday, December 16th. This means that you have more time to look through your closets and find some items that are gently used to new. Or, if you would like, you could also go buy some items from a 5-Below or Dollar Store. Remember this may be one of the only chances the Accotink students have to get Christmas gifts for their loved ones. I have attached the donation list if you want some suggestions.

Thanks,

Mattie

HERE'S WHAT... a weekly message from Ms. Warden who often starts sentences with "here's what..."

HERE'S WHAT...

Here's what: First, I hope that you are reading this. I know that we are innundated with emails, newsletters, notifications, and dings,; many of which we've signed up for ourselves. And then, then we chose to ignore them. When my 5:30 alarm goes off to alert me to take my vitamins, I often ignore it. I get it.

At GWCS, we strive to provide you with valuable information. We know that the world has changed. It's scary to me how closely things have begun to mimic Brave New World, where so much information is available that it all become irrelevant.

Trust me, the information we try to provide you is very relevant. I hope that you are reading your child's Coyote Tracks. I hope that you are reading the information regarding our college application process. I hope that you have saved the date for next week's PAC meeting about the new SAT and the difference between it and the ACT. I hope that you will help the needy children we have agreed to sponsor during this holiday season. I hope we won't be lost in a sea of irrelevancy.

Please read this newsletter. Read it through its entirety. Take a moment to reflect on what is happening in our community. Then, take a moment to envision how some of these activities and events might edify or enrich your life. I promise you, it is worth your time.

With all the best intentions and without judgement,

Ms. W.

WREATH LAYING AT ARLINGTON CEMETERY

EVENT:  Wreath Laying (volunteer info

DATE:    Saturday, December 12, 2014

TIME:  8:45 am – NLT 11:00 am

WHERE:  Arlington National Cemetery

PARK/MEET:  Pentagon Parking Lot (map)

SIGN-UP:  Email Mr. Fedinatz by Wednesday 9 December : fedinatzgs@gwcommunityschool.com

Mr. F. & daughter Anna - December 2014

Join me, Mr. Fedinatz, at Arlington National Cemetery to help lay wreaths on soldiers graves for a community service event!  Meet me at the Pentagon parking lot (map) at 8:45 am (the main cemetery parking lot will be hard to access). We will walk up Columbia Pike and enter through the service gate.  I have attended this ceremony before and the time commitment varies depending on the number of volunteers. With this in mind please DO NOT drop-off your child and leave. If interested, you may opt to attend the official wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at 12:00 pm.  The community service event is to lay wreaths on the tombs therefore we will plan to be at the tractor trailer in the morning where the wreaths will be distributed. I personally would like to be near Sec. 27 (Global War on Terror soldiers) but this is certainly not a requirement.  Families should feel free to make this event personal to their own interests.

Thanks and I look forward to this special event,

Mr. Fedinatz (remember to send me an email!)

  • Date:  Thursday, December 10, 2015
  • Time:  6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

It is that time of the year when GWCS takes part in donating to:

  1. Accotink Academy Holiday Shop
  2. Accotink Family Holiday Sponsorship

#1 DONATE TO THE Accotink Holiday Shop

The Accotink School provides a "Holiday Shop" where their low-income students can purchase gifts for themselves and family members.  They pay for items using points they have earned at school based on their grade level. Students at Accotink range from 5 years to high school.

The Accotink School's Annual Holiday Shop needs your donations of new or gently used items.

  • Click Here to view the suggested donation list. Please take care to donate gently used to like-new items.
  • Do NOT gift wrap the donations.
  • Deadline:  All gifts and donations must be received at GWCS by 9:15 am, Thursday, December 10th.

#2 Sponsor an Accotink FAMILY for the Holidays

Each year, GWCS families sign-up to purchase specific gifts that are NEEDED by Accotink families.  Below is a link for a Sign Up Genius where you can signup to sponsor an Accotink student, sibling or family member.  Please read the instructions carefully.

  • Click above to sponsor an Accotink family this holiday season.
  • This Sign-up Genius includes all the details.  Please read carefully and volunteer to donate what you can.
  • Deadline:  All gifts and donations must be received at GWCS by 9:15 am, Thursday, December 10th.

Accotink Academy is a private therapeutic day school for students with a variety of learning and emotional disabilities. The school has contracts with many school systems in the area, which fund students from their districts to attend the school. Accotink Academy offers individual and group counseling, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy to meet the needs of the students. Accotink Academy operates under the Proprietary School Division of the Virginia Department of Education.

WELCOME!

PAC wishes to welcome Julia O'Grady as the chair for Community Service.

Julia began as one of the Admin Assistants for Community Service this year. She assisted with organizing the sandwich making event for Our Daily Bread and coordinated the recent Painting Weekend for the Facilities volunteers. Julia is already working on the Sponsor an Accotink Family for the Holidays event. Look to hearing more from Julia and community service opportunities for 2015-2016.

COFFEE HOUSE AUDITIONS...

Mr. AB at Coffee House circa 2007

Do you sing? Juggle? Tell jokes? Tell weird stories that go nowhere (Mr. Goldie, I'm looking at you)? Make sick beats? Craft performance art installations with lots of uncomfortable staring? Are you in a band? Do you play an instrument?

If you can kinda say yes to ANY of the above, then GWCS's nearly annual coffee house event is for you!

Simply put, coffee house is a night packed with extravagant and creative performances by you, set in the laid back atmosphere of a coffee house. Yes there will be coffee for the audience, and biscotti or cookies I imagine. There will be lots of people snapping their fingers and saying things like, "dig," and "this is coolsville."

If you would like to perform at coffee house, here's what you need to do:

  • Prepare a performance 3 - 5 minutes in length.
  • Sign up to audition your performance on the signup sheet found on Mr. AB's door.
  • Audition on Tuesday, December 8th!
  • Coffee House is Friday, December 11th from 7pm - 9pm

Volunteer:  If you would like to participate in coffee house, but you don't want to perform, there's still tons of set-up, backstage, equipment prep and other stuff to do.  Email Mr. AB expressing your interest and watch for forthcoming information.

PLEASE RECLAIM YOUR SUPPLIES...

Dear Parents:  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your help with painting the school classrooms a few weeks ago.  There are still a lot of paint supplies that were left at the school.  If you recognize anything in the photos below, please email Ms. Mauney and she will send them home with your child.  We use every square inch of our space at GWCS and unfortunately, we don't have a place to store all of this so it's just piled up in the entry of the "new" wing.  Thank you!

Note:  photos were taken mid-week so some supplies may have already been picked up.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is DELIA O'GRADY for demonstrating the GWCS value of RESPONSIBILITY

Delia shows responsibility to herself and to her classmates.  She is always early to basketball.  She works on her game and helps others improve their skills.  She is always on time for class.  She is always prepared.  She always does excellent work.  She helps others whenever she can.  She does all of these things with a smile and a great attitude.  Delia is a model of responsibility, and she does it (seemingly) effortlessly!

Check out the 'Student of the Week' bulletin board near Mr. Pereira's classroom. Each week a student is recognized for his or her demonstration of one of the eight GWCS Values.

The Painting Weekend Was A Success!

Parents and students joined forces to prep the classrooms, complete the priming/painting and reassemble much of the furniture and wall hangings by Sunday afternoon. The fresh orange, grey and white walls have added enthusiastic color and new dimension to Ms. Shumard, Mr. Connelly and Senor Torres classrooms.

We can see that there may be some minor, additional work ahead. A few smaller bookcases were reinforced with Gorilla Glue and nails; while the larger dry erase boards were relieved of their dysfunctional frames. Faculty, please inform PAC of any additional fixes that would be helpful.

Everyone, come on by at pick up time to see the reveal!

On behalf of the faculty, staff and students of GWCS - PAC would like to thank the following parents, grandparents and students for the donation of time and materials provided:

Ellen Sullivan, Nancy Burns, Jan Syers, Steve Whittington, Deborah Rosen, Dennis McCafferty, Laura Williamson, Chris Massey, Lynn Koplaski, Kebby and Joseph Kelley, Debbie Fuller, Kelley Henderson Hagen, Kathy and Kevin Easley, Stephanie Corrao, Melissa Morgan, Christine, Katie and Troy Conner , Nikolaos Abatzis, Lisa Reddy and Aveen Devaiah, Pat Quarti, Victoria Delgado, Linda and Peter Campbell, Julia, Kevin and James O’Grady, John and William Conway, Ryan Burns, Sabrina Castro and Alejandro Roman.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is BRIAN CONNER for demonstrating the GWCS value of INVESTMENT.

Brian not only clearly puts a great deal of time and effort into his work, he also asks probing questions, and demonstrates a desire to be open minded and constantly challenge himself. For example, he was quick to join music club and theater and take on the responsibility of singing a song he'd never heard before.

However, you can carry the torch without me. This is listed as an unofficial GWCS event because we will not have a staff member on site. Many GWCS parents will attend however.

This event is open to students 16 and older. Students under 16 may participate along with a parent.

Take photos and turn in to Ms. Mauney a GWCS Community Service form!

Love,

Ms. W.

Thank you to all the GWCS families who contributed non-perishable goods from October 26th - November 6th.   Special thanks to our parent volunteers, Debbie & Doug Fuller, for donating the collection bins, collecting and delivering all the goods to Our Daily Bread, and determining the contest winner!

And the winner is.... Ms. Shumard's Advisory!

Ms. Shumard's Advisory will be the recipients of a special  winners lunch!

A note from Debbie Fuller: "A special thanks to Ms. Mauney for showing us where the goods were; students Alex and Laura for helping carry everything out of the school and into my van; Jennifer and daughter Evelyn for coming with me to Our Daily Bread, helping unload the van, and calculating the results.  You guys were great!"

Special thanks to GWCS parent Marcelle Miles, who works for Our Daily Bread, and brought this event to the attention of the GWCS Community Service Committee.   We look forward to participating again next year.

COFFEE HOUSE AUDITIONS...

AB's door.
  • Audition on Tuesday, December1st!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK...

The student of the week is LOGAN PAWLIK for demonstrating the GWCS value of KINDNESS.

Logan is always in a great mood every morning and is pleasant to all.  Logan’s mood rubs off on others and they are in a better mood for the rest of the day as a result. He does thoughtful tasks for others without being asked and shows kindness indiscriminately. Ms. Newton says "Last week Logan noticed my board was falling apart at the bottom, so he came in the next day with wood screws and a drill and fixed it on the spot. Just because!"

HERE'S WHAT... a weekly message from Ms. Warden who often starts her explanations by saying "here's what..."

HERE'S WHAT...

COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL

Hey, Parents!

Here's a gentle reminder about how to communicate effectively with your GWCS staff: we're done with the the first quarter and thought it appropriate to review protocol so that we can make sure that we are meeting your needs. As you know, at GWCS we strive to communicate openly, honestly, and timely. However, our mission is kid-centered! We are interacting with kids from the moment we arrive at the gym, during our classes, during our lunches, and on the way to our cars in the evening. We pride ourselves on not sitting behind desks or computers. With that in mind, please consider the following:

  1. EMAIL:  When you compose an email, please list one person in the "To" field. That provides us with a clear expectation regarding who should respond. Then, feel free to CC anyone you might think would benefit from receiving the information or questions you are providing.
  2. CALL:  If you choose to communicate via email, please allow 48 hours for a response. If you need more immediate action, please call the school and ask to speak with a member of our administration. Providing the reason for your call will allow your call to be directed to the person who will best be able to assist you.
  3. WHO:  How do you know who to ask for help?
    • If you have questions or concerns about a particular class, email the teacher.
    • If you have overall academic or situational concerns email the advisor.
    • If you feel that you have worked with both the teacher and advisor and need more support, please call the school.
We work as a team at GWCS, and your child's success is our first priority.
  4. GET INVOLVED:  Lastly, as I said at our last PAC meeting, one of the best ways you can optimize your child's experience at GWCS is to get involved yourself! Come in the building to pick your child up and say hello to staff and students. Volunteer for one of our much-needed projects, and feel free to blame me if your kid tells you they want you to have nothing to do with the school! Come to our PAC potluck dinners! Come out to support one of our teams!

Community is so important that we made it our middle name. You are already a part of something wonderful. Take advantage of it! Believe it or not, connections made here last a lifetime.

GWCS STAUNTON SHAKESPEARE TRIP

So, here’s the deal.  I have been to hundreds of theatre events in my lifetime.  I have seen Shakespeare performed on stages from Los Angeles to London.  I am an aficionado.  I may not be the best judge, but I say this in all sincerity: The Blackfriars Playhouse at theAmerican Shakespeare Center in Staunton Virginia is the home of the finest productions of classical theatre that I have ever seen.  There.  I said it.

In addition to performing theatre arts at the highest possible level, it should also be noted that this is a traditional performance troupe.  That means that all four plays are performed by the SAME EIGHT PEOPLE!  It is a mind-boggling experience!  They also pick popular songs from the last fifty years that are reflective of the themes of the plays and then sing and play music LIVE before each show and at intermission!

We will stay at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel, a the five star hotel (4.2 on Expedia.com), attached to the theatre, two blocks away from downtown Staunton.  Breakfast is included in the price, and the meals in town are reasonably priced!

We are going down on Friday afternoon this year.  We are going to leave around noon, November 13nd and stay in Staunton long enough to see ALL FOUR SHOWS!!!  On Friday night we will seeAnthony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare’s gritty parlance into Roman tragedy .  On Saturday we will take in the matinee of The Winter’s Tale and Saturday night’s show is Henry VI, part 1 (Joan of Arc).  Then, after those three heavy dramas, at Sunday’s matinee we will see A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  It is almost too much good fortune to run across in a single lifetime!

If you like live theatre, this is just about the coolest three day weekend you could possibly experience!  With two students to a room, four tickets to the theatre, two dinners out, two lunches, two breakfasts at the hotel, and a backstage tour of the Blackfriars Theatre, this trip will be amazing!   The entire trip will cost $675.00 per student.   The experience, of course, will be priceless!

RESERVE YOUR SPOT TODAY!

There are a limited number of spaces reserved for GWCS at the hotel and the theatre.  If you want to be included on this trip, please bring a check for $650.00 (made out to GWCS) and drop it in the ‘forms’ basket on Ms. Mauney's desk.  In previous years the spots were all filled quickly.  You do not need to bring any other cash on the trip.  Every tax, tip, and trip to the snack cart are included!
