The GWCS 2010 R.E.A.L. Term Internship Program

The 2010 R.E.A.L. Internship program got off to an amazing start on Friday, April 16th ! Although we had some last minute cancellations, thanks to the heroic efforts of several individuals who will be mentioned shortly, virtually every student had at least one option that fit their personality and/or interest profile. The following list of current positions shows the great diversity of our student’s interests and abilities. They include shadowing, assisting, teaching or taking on projects in the following areas: Law, Biology, Computer (programming or repair), Counseling, Catering, Events Planning, Film Editing, Landscaping, Librarian, and Music Education at the college level, Office work, Pluming, Teaching (children and disabled adults), Theatre, and more. There were even a few esoteric spots (e.g. Shadowing a forensics M.D.) that weren’t filled; but we can always use them next year! The students are now getting a very real taste of the working world and assessing the pros and cons of their positions vis-a-vis their own particular values, interests and personality preferences. These experiences will create life-long memories and allow the students to make informed decisions for years to come. Many students are determined to come out of this event with more than introductory knowledge of their field. I fully expect that each and every one will be able to ask for a letter of reference when they are done. And they will have another experience to add to their resume.
In making this possible, I must first thank Sarah Connor, without whose help; (day and night!) many of the students would not be placed. Ms. Warden, Mr. Hartman, Mr. Rhodes, Mr. Hottell, Ms. Hilderbrand and Miss Lemoine, all suggested or offered places, many to several students or at the last minute. The Internship committee made calls and assisted with the training sessions. And last, but by NO means least, Ms. Sinichko made sure each and every student was fully prepared to start on their first day.
Sincerely,
Karen Gaughan, GWCS Internship Coordinator
