FTC EASTERN VIRGINIA QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT
Saturday, January 14, 2012
The GW Community School/Coyote Robotics Teams participated in the FTC Eastern Virginia Qualifying Tournament in Norfolk, Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 14. Both teams, 965 and 3749, built new robots from scratch for this event, using ideas and performance from their past two events. Team 3749 found some of their new design elements were not effective, and were not very successful in their matches. Team 965’s new design, though still suffering some problems, performed well enough to finish 5-2 after the qualifying matches, ranked #3 out of 23 teams. They ended up leading the 2nd seeded alliance for the semifinals. Their alliance won their first of three games, but lost the other two and failed to advance to the finals.

GWCS Commemorative Spirit Wear - 13 Years and Going Strong!
Lake Anna + Friends + Support + Laughter = Magnificent Essays
For the 8th year in a row, GWCS seniors and teachers visited beautiful Lake Anna for the College Essay Writing Retreat. Over three days and two nights, students were given the time and space to present an authentic version of themselves in their college essays. With over twelve solid hours of writing time, in addition to lessons and group activities, there was no shortage of inspiration or support. In addition to writing their essays, seniors made meals for each other, played football and manhunt and even did a little fishing. A great time was had by all, but most importantly, seniors can move forward with their college applications confident that one of the biggest stumbling blocks has been removed.
GWCS students take a field trip into the future - Solar Decathlon, Washington, DC
The GWCS Sustainable Living, Environmental Science, and Astrophysics classes visited the Solar Decathlon on the national mall last week. Thanks to Ms. Schneider, Ms. Gaughan and Ms. McDonald for driving and helping to chaperone. We went into the solar houses and talked to the teams of students who built them, learning about sustainable design, energy efficient building techniques and solar power. If you have never been - be sure to add it to your calendar for next year.
