The GWCS Robotics team wins at the ECPI Robotfest in Virginia Beach!

Shorthanded without the seniors who stayed home to attend Prom, Joseph Esposito, Team Captain, modified and improved the robot programming all day with the help of Joe Mathewson and Joe Ramsay-Clark. With William McCarty driving the robot, the team advanced to the Championship Match.  The exciting three-game match ended in a tie, requiring an extra “Sudden-Death” overtime game.  When his alliance partner's robot failed to respond, Will McCarty was forced to take on two other great robots by himself.  Driving like a master, scoring, defending, and driving back up the ramp in the last few seconds, Will brought the trophy home with a win, 131 points to 117.

Mr. Pereira accepts the Washington Post Agnes Meyer teacher of the year award

 On Tuesday, May 12th Mr. Pereira was accompanied to the awards ceremoncy by his wife, parents, sister, colleagues, students and GWCS parents.Mr. Pereira has been awarded the 2008-2009 Agnes Myer Outstanding Teacher Award through The Washington Post. This award is made even more significant as it is awarded to only ONE private school teacher in The Washington Post readership area. At the beginning of the year, Mr. P. chose “Excellence” as the GWCS value that he represents, and now it is officially confirmed.

Great people take great strides at the cystic fibrosis walk

36 GWCS community members trekked into downtown Washington on Wednesday, May 6th to participate in the 4th Annual Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Walk. And although they got caught in a downpour halfway through the walk (not Patrick Maton or Blake Colling-Hottell, they ran the entire course!) students, teachers, parents and alumni alike persevered to raise money and awareness for this great cause. In the end, the community raised over $2,000 to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

GWCS tree huggers rewarded for removing tree huggers

GWCS received the 2009 Friends of Trees Award from The Fairfax County Tree Commission, part of Fairfax County's Urban Forest Management Division, for their back-breaking work removing English Ivy from indigenous trees in King's Park Park. A group of dedicated GWCS volunteers have been removing the invasive ivy, which hugs and unlitmately strangles the trees, from the park for the past three years. With Earth Day on April 22 and Arbor day on April 24th, this is the time to praise the hard work the students and staff do to preserve the natural beauty of our community. The award will be presented at the Fairfax County Arbor Day Festival held at Northern Virginia Community College's Annandale Campus on Saturday, April 25th at 1:00 pm. Come out and celebrate this hard earned and well deserved award with GWCS.
