Coyote Day is One of the Oldest GWCS Traditions

Coyote Day is one of the oldest GWCS traditions.  Its roots?  On May 4th, 2000, the sophomore class pooled IMG_3765together and bought a statue of a coyote.  That morning at school, the statue was presented to the staff, a congratulations cake was unveiled and devoured, and the balance of the day was spent outside, primarily in a marathon game of students and staff wiffle ball.  Chris Otchy homered four times to the amazement of all in attendance.  Around noon a delegation of shoppers went to giant for several packs of hotdogs, and a grilled lunch became part of the day.

OBX Roller Coaster Day was a Thrilling Ride for All!

DSC_0335On Friday, April 15, GWCS 9th and 10th grade students participated in Roller Coaster Day.  Using templates from www.PaperRollerCoasters.com, each group designed and built a marble run out of cardstock to enter in a contest at the end of the day.  Contest winners won gift cards and GWCS swag.  One of the six student groups documented the event through videotaped interviews, video footage, and still photographs instead of building a coaster.  In the pre-OBX activity, we talked about the physics principles behind roller coasters and learned basic construction techniques.  In the post-OBX activity, students demonstrated their work to the 11th and 12th graders and we talked about what was most fun what was most challenging, and how to make the event even better next time.  This OBX event was a huge success -- the students were a community in action demonstrating GWCS values such as team play, kindness, excellence, responsibility and intellectual curiosity.  The added bonus was that everyone had FUN!

GW Alumnus Andy Eblin Helps Create a Big Event

Andy_Eblin_James_Madison_4-9-2011For GW Community School alumnus Andy Eblin public service has become a way of life. At GWCS, Andy was on the student government three years in a row, including being SGA president in his Junior year.  Now a senior at James Madison University, Andy has continued to look for ways to create community. After a spring party at JMU got out of control and resulted in damage to the Harrisonburg community, Andy founded a club called Madison Involved.  He partnered with the SGA's community affairs director, Cori Kendrick, and set a goal of signing up 500 students for the Big Event, a day of service in the Harrisonburg community, that took place April 9, 2011.
