500 Pounds of Spaghetti for Martha's Table

PDF Print E-mail

Does anyone remember that great children's book Strega Nona with the pasta pot that overflows into the village?  Well, after the spaghetti drive last week, GWCS collected enough pasta to reenact that story!  Ms. Warden set forth a food drive challenge to all eight GWCS advisories to see which one could collect the most spaghetti.  At the end of the week we had over 500 pounds of spaghetti with Mr. Torres' advisory coming in first place with a whopping total of 140 pounds.

The food drive was for Martha's Table, Inc. which provides meals for the homeless as well as senior shut-ins 365 days a year in Washington, D.C.  GW Community School will be assisting Martha's Table by sponsoring food drives throughout the year to support their Meals for Minds Program.  This program sets up mobile food pantries for needy families at two elementary schools and provides them both perishable and non perishable options.

For the month of October GWCS will be collecting cans of beans!  Any kind of beans (in a can) except for jelly beans!  Yes, we did have to clarify that with the students.

Following is quote from an email we received from Martin Booker at Martha's Table after the GWCS spaghetti drive:

"Wow that’s Amazing!!!!  Let everyone know that they are making a huge impact in the community. Tell the students that we are very proud of them and their willingness to help others.  Not only was Mr. Torres’ advisory the winner of the competition, but the GW Community School collected the most food out of all of the drives that took place for the month of September!!! "

GWCS once again really came together as a community which makes everyone a winner!  Way to go Coyotes!  Now it's time to go crazy with beans!
